Well, that didn’t take long to go back to their old ways.

Another chapter in the quest to rewrite history that progressives cannot accept.

When Gov. Snyder and Michigan Republicans bailed out the Detroit Public School System and City of Detroit a few years earlier, many posters on this site (myself included), warned everyone that it wouldn’t take long for inept & corrupt former political structure to reassert itself when the time presented itself.

Well, guess what?

{More information after the fold}

At last Tuesday’s Board Meeting of the Detroit Public School Community District (November 13th), under Agenda Item 15.11, the Board approved by a 6-1 vote the initiation of the renaming process for Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine, Harms Elementary School, Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men, Detroit School of the Arts, Marygrove, the Latin School and Catherine Ferguson Academy for Young Women.

This has been the pet project of at-large board member (and failed democratic candidate for the Michigan State Senate), LaMar Lemmons for some time now.

This isn’t exactly a “done deal” yet. From the DPSCD Board minutes:

“The Board may change the name of a school giving consideration to commemorating individuals who have made a significant contribution to the enhancement of education. Likewise the Board may also consider changing or renaming a school facility that is newly built or redesigned, where the name of a school that does not reflect the current school population, the community of the geographic area where the school is located requests a name change that more closely aligns with the history of the locality or information newly discovered about the current name of the school is negative in nature.”

No logical rationale has been provided for the names on the list.

But, I’ll be more than happy to recommend my theory for two of those named.

The first one, and less obvious, is Frederick Douglas.

Readers might start scratching their heads on this one. What could Detroiters possibly object to regarding Frederick Douglas?

Wasn’t he an abolitionist?

Wasn’t he one of “us” (read: the color of his skin). Democrats, unlike Conservatives, are still fixated on skin color.

Well, you’d be right.

Want to know what else Frederick Douglas was?

They don’t mention this at the Wright Museum very much nor do they in Detroit Public Schools: Frederick Douglas was also a die hard Republican.

In an except from a letter written by Frederick Douglas to one J. M. Dalzell written in 1883;

“For the life of me I cannot see how any honest colored man who has brains enough to put two ideas together can allow himself under the notion of independence to give aid and comfort to the Democratic party in Ohio or elsewhere.

My advice to colored men everywhere is to stick to the Republican party. Tell your wants, hold the party up to its profession, but do your utmost to keep it in power in State and Nation.”

Ouch!

Remember, this was a century before democrats used the power of the purse to entice (or enslave…take your pick) people to vote democrat. Taking a leisurely walk through any neighborhood in places like Detroit, Flint, Saginaw or even Lansing should be all you need to know with how well democrat party “leadership” has worked!

Even I didn’t trust the democratic party back in the day. Some things never change!

The second “objectionable” name shouldn’t come as a big surprise to readers: Dr. Benjamin Carson.

The same Dr. Benjamin Carson who is Pres. Trump’s HUD Secretary.

“The person who has the most to do with your success is you.” People find this philosophy objectionable???

The good news here is that the school board’s actions haven’t been lost on others outside of the district.

Last Friday, Project 21 issued a scathing press release critical of the DPSCD Board decision.

I personally loved this quote from Project 21 member Nadra Enzi,

“If Ben Carson’s “projects-to-presidential appointee” name isn’t worthy to remain on a Detroit school, it proves why his hometown is a self-inflicted wasteland. Detroit school board members are trying to score symbolic political points while their city literally implodes from epidemic crime and decay.”

The rest of the release makes the DPSCD School Board look even more pathetic.

Board Member Lemmons is termed out this December, so I’m not sure how much inertia this harebrained proposal will carry with it in ‘19.

Stay tuned…

    Twitter was on fire over Dr. Carson's issue. The Douglas issue not so much. You mean to tell me that when a student from that school sees Dr. Carson on the TV he doesn't have a sense of pride. Our Children have no hero's any more.

    More disgusting is a subtle message being sent to children. This is exactly how dumb-down works.

    Lemmons lacks "brains enough to put two ideas together". Maybe Dr. Carson can help with that.
