Memorial Day 2018

Some memories from today.

It was warm and humid.

As usual, it hardly stopped hundreds who gathered in Traverse City at the veterans memorial for the annual Memorial Day observance.  Veterans, patriots, and Gold Star mothers were present, all to honor the fallen in wars both recent and past.

I have never served.  My family and so many others have have been blessed in ways to have a military that has guaranteed certain freedoms.  So many have sacrificed it all for our country, but it has already been said more eloquently here.

Below is a collection of photographs from today’s gathering.

Sunday Sermon – Memorial Day

Today's sermon

Hebrews 12:1-10

  • I’d like to share something I found on the internet:
  • It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
  • It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
  • It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
  • It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us the right to assemble.
  • It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
  • It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.
  • It is the VETERAN who salutes the Flag,
  • It is the VETERAN who serves under the Flag.
  • It is the VETERAN who rests under the Flag.

Did you notice those last three refer to our flag? We talk about our flag and we talk about the colors of courage – but did you know that when the Stars and Stripes were officially adopted in 1777 that the red, white and blue used for the flag had no particular meaning? Those colors did, however, have specific meaning in the Great Seal of the United States.

Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, while reporting to congress on the seal, had this to say: “The colors of the pales – the vertical stripes – are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence; Red, hardiness and valor; and Blue, the color of the chief – the broad band above the stripes – signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice.”

Why So Happy?

Is joy expressed in reflections appropriate?

I Saw a post on Facebook yesterday that suggested wishing folks a “Happy Memorial day” was inappropriate.

I felt it was unfortunate to see, and it made me go through the whole self reflection and critique thing of how I might offer greetings or wishes from these pages.  Yesterday in particular of course, when I did in-fact wish those reading a “Happy Memorial day” towards the end of the post.

I can only conclude that I am indeed happy.  I am happy that we have a nation worth fighting for, that is better in oh-so-many ways than all others, that inspires courage, even in the face of the ultimate consequence.

Why wouldn’t we be happy throughout our celebration of those who would give their all to defend our way of life?  We can certainly still appreciate dedication, sacrifice, valor, and heroism.

While we still pay respect solemnly, perhaps we can also give thanks to our Maker that we have protectors and advocates who stand between us and the plentiful misery so many others have endured across this earth for false prophets, flawed ideologies, and lust for power.

Tell me again why we shouldn’t be happy?

Get Yer Jack Boot On

The 'other' definition of "force" once again rears its ugly head.

Pure-TicketThe logical conclusion to an over applied nanny state is the use of violence to prevent one from hurting oneself.

The Stings are on.  Grants to step up ‘enforcement’ (key use of words here) have been doled out. Click on Detroit says:

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in a mandatory seat belt enforcement grant beginning May 23-June 5.

Take the money, or else.

Indeed.  Click it, or we’ll put a gun to your head to save your life.  As Michigan goes into the high travel Memorial Day weekend, the stage is set once again to punish those who tempt fate by not strapping in.  In Macomb County they want to do it the nice way:

Extra patrols start Monday and continue through June 5 as part of the latest “Click it or Ticket” campaign, targeting motorists who are not wearing seat belts.

“Our primary goal is always to encourage voluntary compliance with the law. For those drivers who do not comply, our deputies will deliver warnings or issue violations as the circumstances dictate,” Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said.

Oh, how friendly.

Click-it or Money-Grab “laws” Often Effect Such Hostility

Oh noes! It’s the great “bleed out” of 2015.

Remember back in 1985, when this was never to be used as a device to stop you for revenue? I do. This garbage started as a Secondary Offense. Today, the ‘bleed out” is written expressly for the purpose to make a grant-gamed, quick shakedown buck with occasional extra perks.

However, the Thin Blue Line sure do get their panties in a bunch, don’t they? So, who is forcing any of them to become LEO? Nobody. Does anybody ever see LEO lobbying our Lansingcritters to get rid of such money-grab “laws” as Click-it or Ticket? Hell no. Actually, LEO is behind most of our invasive quick-buck “laws” because they’re the departmental arm who provide Tough On Crimecampaign propaganda for our Lansingcritters as well as elected Municritters. Perhaps, the alleged doctor should’ve directed some of his frustration there, too.

Frankly put, Haddad needs to STFU, and quit being such a whiny li’l bitch, because as we all know, Officer Safety often tells lies and/or shoots pets, especially, if there’s a Reserve Note involved for a State government $74+ Billion in the hole.

Ps. Mrs. Russell, go find something better to do with your life other than playing sensationalized “gotchya games” with Private Citizen’s employment because your daddy was Redford Po-po. WXYZ should know better than to air such crap. Seriously, some dude rationalizing a hypothetical scenario when he’s frustrated with a frivolous money-grab stop is a whole world of difference from when LEO loses their shit.

OABTW, Wagner never lost his job, did he? Nope.

God, Country, Family.

Memorial Day - Honoring our fallen and departed.

flag-stonesToday we reflect on those who stood ready to defend this country, its ideals, and what it has promised for so long.

We give thanks to our maker for giving them to us, and in appreciation pray that they meet Him as will His people in the promise of eternal life through His name Jesus Christ.  Our nation, founded upon a Judeo-Christian basis has been the beacon of the world since it’s inception.

We honor our fallen for their loyalty, and honor, faith, and love for a nation that holds the promise of true liberty, and sanctity of family that was given and blessed by God.  Throughout times when our nation has struggled with its faith and tradition, those who fought for us and defended us remained steadfast till the time when they moved to a higher place.

Our gratitude is ongoing.

Click It Or Ticket Force Zones Ramp Up

Never happy enough with mere taxation and over burdening regulatory efforts, state officials want to remind you who is boss.

Michigan State Police are stepping up efforts to imprint their thumbs on Michigan motorists this coming holiday weekend.

Ever since the seat belt legislation was foisted upon a gullible electorate, millions of dollars have been used to cajole, threaten, and punish drivers who have threatened no one’s safety but their own. Since the inception of the law that was NEVER meant to be a primary offense, TENS OF THOUSANDS of citizens of our great lake state have been harassed by authoritative desires of some in law enforcement, and have had their 4th amendment rights violated under the guise of suspicion that they were not properly buckled in.

From the state department of propaganda today (with commentary inserted):

May 18, 2015

Seat_Belt_Law_Graphic_-_Web_489461_7For the first time, federally funded seat belt enforcement efforts will take place in all 83 Michigan counties to help jump start an increase in seat belt use and reduce traffic deaths and injuries. Starting today through May 31, police departments, sheriff’s offices and the Michigan State Police will conduct stepped up seat belt enforcement as part of the annual Click It Or Ticket campaign.

According to Joshua, a personal injury lawyer in Peoria Az, the enhanced effort coincides with the 15th year since Michigan adopted a law allowing law enforcement officers to stop motorists for not being buckled up. According to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, 2,659 lives have been saved since the law began in 2000 as a result of substantially higher belt use. States with primary enforcement laws have higher rates of seat belt use.

15 years of jackboot tyranny, now enhanced courtesy of an overreaching federal bureaucracy.

Memorial Day

tagsWe remember.

The Sons, the Daughters, the Husbands, Wives, Brothers, Sisters ..

““War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers

From only a story perhaps, but the words reach out into our reality.

Our fallen shall not be forgotten.
