Lansing “Protest” scheduled for tomorrow.

Just a friendly heads up from several snitches of mine.

The Michigan People’s Campaign is planning to “lobby”(/protest?) in Lansing on Tuesday at the Capitol Building beginning at 9:00am against the changes made to the Michigan paid sick leave law that Legislature essentially “short-circuited” by passing prior to the election earlier this year.

No word on why the Michigan Legislature couldn’t do the same with Proposal 2, I can only surmise that they just like losing, but I digress.

If anyone has any business up in Lansing tomorrow, again, just a friendly reminder to watch yourselves around this crowd.

Progressives tend to get a little bit hostile when they don’t get their way.

‘Nuff said.

The legislature couldn’t do the same with Proposal 2 because Article II § 9 of the Constitution does not apply to amendments to the constitution itself. With respect to initiatives, it only applies “to laws which the legislature may enact under this constitution.”

      Yeah, about that...

"The power of referendum does not extend to acts making appropriations for state institutions or to meet deficiencies in state funds and must be invoked in the manner prescribed by law within 90 days following the final adjournment of the legislative session at which the law was enacted."

Exactly how did they intend to pay these "independents" to redistrict Michigan again?

You're reading the wrong section. Proposal 2 is a constitutional amendment under Article XII, Section 2. Proposal 2 was not a referendum. A referendum is a vote of the people on a law already enacted by the legislature.

There are three types of ballot proposals in Michigan: initiatives (Proposal 1 of 2018), referenda (Proposal 1 in 2014 - wolf hunting), and Constitutional amendments (Proposals 2 and 3 in 2018). Constitutional amendments can either be placed on the ballot by the Legislature (Article XII, section 1) or the people (section 2).

Yeah, and about THAT one as well:

"Every petition shall include the full text of the proposed amendment, and be signed by registered electors of the state equal in number to at least 10 percent of the total vote cast for all candidates for governor at the last preceding general election at which a governor was elected."

Note that it is singular, amendment, not plural amendments.

Or, did you forget our earlier discussion on this?

I can at least see your point of view there. Reasonable minds can differ on that, but it's 100% incorrect to say the legislature could've passed Proposal 2 to keep it from going to a vote of the people. Your original assertion in this post had nothing to do with Article XII.

Pretty much standard fare, low level street protest.

Everyone on the 3rd level pounding on the railing for the TV cameras (all three dozen of them) and shouting the ever-predictable protest chants.

Although, I did get a kick out of the duck.

Image shamelessly stolen from protestors social media feed.
Say, I thought that you couldn't hide your identity in a public building???

      OABTW, speaking about being vigilant...
