I've heard from one or two people who viewed this speech (another angle, with better audio, is here) as very unprofessional. I disagree. Jason and others pegged it; until such time as the party leadership starts acting like republicans (and stops rewarding those who use both the constitution and the party platform as so much toilet paper), any pretense to unity in the Michigan Republican Party is illusory, and only the ignorant, the stupid, or the foolish would attribute any substance to it. That Congressman Amash would take advantage of a suitable opportunity to call out the artificial harmony for what it is is completely appropriate.

That having been said, let me point out a couple of things that Justin is probably hoping that we don't notice:

First, "... establishment interest groups ..." and "... the crooks and the cronies ..." and "... political class elites. The people who are so blinded by their arrogance ..." and "... insiders who have contempt for the American people ..." . . . Okay, hang on a second. Are we all forgetting that Amash's campaign is bankrolled by the first couple of the wooden shoe mafia? Are we also forgetting that Amash has as his consultant the same guy who abandoned Congressman Bentivolio the second that his challenger ponied up more money than Kerry could offer? This is almost a case of protesting too much. And for any tea partiers who really want to make a stink out of it, let's also note that Amash will in all likelihood be whipping the 3rd District on Brian Calley's behalf this month.

Second, just so we're clear, this Afghanistan War Veteran is not, by any stretch of the imagination, alone in his criticism of Congressman Amash's abysmal record when it comes to constituent services for veterans. The AMVETS scorecard (giving Amash a 22.5% rating, the worst of the 113th Congress) doesn't just include legislation and voting records, but also representation and constituent services, which is a big deal to veterans. How bad does Amash suck on this aspect? The county veterans council has an informal standing advisory out to all veterans in the 3rd District portion of the county: If you need assistance from your congressman, go ahead and call Amash's office. But know that, as soon as you hang up the phone, pick it back up and call Congressman Huizenga's office, because that's the only way you'll get results.

How pissed off are the veterans in the 3rd District? Remember that selective undervoting we've been discussing in various comment threads this year? Well, that's pretty much what the various veterans groups in the 3rd District are advising their members to do: If Amash can't be bothered to address veterans' concerns, then they won't be bothered to address his congressional race. So far as I know, the only veteran on Amash's staff is Chris Mabie, and he's on the campaign staff. (To my knowledge, Amash has no veteran on either his in-district staff or his DC staff.)

I don't argue that Congressman Amash has probably the most constitutional voting record of anyone currently serving in Congress, and that most certainly should be commended. And yes, a 14.88% split in last Tuesday's 3rd District primary will probably be enough to deter most establishment types from challenging Justin anytime soon, to be sure. But that's not going to deter a ticked-off veteran who knows how to run a campaign, and if Amash doesn't do something obvious to correct his abysmal record with veterans groups, then in 2016, a primary challenge will come again . . . from a Veteran who will make a point of hammering Amash on his known weak points.

Mr Heines critique of Rep Amash was informative and hopefully helpful. Those who support less government and more responsibility can be inconsistent, but should not be supported for long. It is good to scold an elected official. We will feel better and they better feel scolded. Know one is perfect but as a hole their votes should be TRUE, GOOD, and beautiful.

      Yep. You called it, KRH.

It becomes increasingly difficult to lend any support to young Justin, when he pushes those he allegedly loathes.

“He supports Obamacare,” Amash said. “Medicaid expansion is a major part of Obamacare. … If you don’t support Obamacare, you shouldn’t support Medicaid expansion.”

Yep. As Mrs. Fink likes to also conflate... "Lt. Governerd was just following orders".
