A New Michigan Holiday?

ChavezThree states already celebrate Cesar Chavez Day as an official holiday. And in 2011, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation declaring March 31st “Cesar Chavez Day.”

So by golly, what is a bandwagon mentality supposed to do with THAT kind of momentum?

It seems we are could be heading in that direction with the Michigan Board of Education’s newest effort, a: STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION RESOLUTION HONORING CÉSAR ESTRADA CHÁVEZ:

The State Board of Education this week unanimously adopted a resolution honoring the late Cesar E. Chavez as an American hero, a civil rights leader, Latino, farm worker, and a labor leader; a religious and spiritual figure; a community servant and social entrepreneur; a crusader for nonviolent social change; and an environmentalist and consumer advocate.

Lets add that curriculum to the already tenderized minds of mush that must suffer such evils as ‘anti-bullying’ propaganda, Common Core, and Michelle Obama’s ‘My-Plate’ lunch program.

And sure, why not?

Its not as if he advocated immigration reform, allowing illegals to benefit from their invading the US.

No really.  Alinsky Accolyte Chavez hated illegals. So much so, that his beloved United Farm Workers ratted them out to the INS:

According to many historical accounts, Chavez ordered union members to call the Immigration and Naturalization Service and report illegal immigrants who were working in the fields so that they could be deported. Some UFW officials were also known to picket INS offices to demand a crackdown on illegal immigrants.

In the 70s, the UFW set up a “wet line” to stop undocumented Mexican immigrants from entering the United States.

And then there was this

Chavez, the supposed hero of Mexican-Americans, also was an active enemy of illegal immigrants, whom he saw as a threat to striking workers. The UFW even carried out violence against illegals: “Under the supervision of Chavez’s cousin, Manuel, UFW members tried at first to persuade Mexicans not to cross the border. One time when that didn’t work, they physically attacked and beat them up to scare them off…”

So what the heck. Lets just all get together, modify a few textbooks, sing a Kumbya, and celebrate what the man was all about.

si si puede!  si si puede! (sound familiar?)

And why not pull a Lazarus while we’re at it?

We could really use some fresh lettuce in the school cafeterias..

Friendly bit of advice: Don't mention Chavez's defense of America's immigration policy.in Southwestern Detroit.

It seems that the locals haven't been taught about that pesky little fact and take umbrage when that guy painted on the sides of a number of buildings and even had a school named after him, is promoting the very same policies they were raised to oppose.
