No one has mentioned how Michigan will legally handle all the child brides who will accompany the military-aged males who make up the majority of these immigrants - circa 80% according to EU registrations. Islamic marital jurisprudence as practiced in Syria allows girls to marry once they reach baligh (puberty), circa 13 years old. Will the USG recognize those marriages? Will Michigan recognize those marriages? Will Michigan then be forced to allow such child marriages amongst non Muslims as a matter of 'fairness'?
Then you have the issue of polygyny. Under Islamic marital jurisprudence as practiced in Syria, Muslim men are allowed to practice polygyny, that is, they can have more than one wife at the same time, up to a total of four. Will the USG recognize those extra wives? Will Michigan recognize those extra wives? Will Michigan then be forced to allow polygyny amongst non Muslims as a matter of 'fairness'?
This isn't an academic question. It is already a major issue in Europe.
Perhaps we should ask SCOTUS for an opinion. They seem to be in charge of American marriage jurisprudence these days.
