Is it just me, or is anyone else waiting for the other shoe to drop?
LG Calley made one of his two big announcements this week.
The second is still anyone’s guess. Will he be running run for governor? Will he run for US Senate?
We’ll know that one on Thursday.
But this one is a real head scratcher.
{I’ve got more after the fold}
This afternoon the Lieutenant Governor announced that he wants to “clean up Michigan Government”.
There is even a website and a video which glosses over the basics of what he is apparently leading.
To be honest, on the surface, it doesn’t sound half bad. Granted it’s similar to a version that went around last year, only this time around, there is a tie-in with Michigan Legislator’s salaries/benefits with Michigan Teacher salaries/benefits.
Why they are connecting only these two is anyone’s guess.
Now, here is where the problems start to arise.
Buried in the minutiae on the website, it states that these are the first three points of a ten point plan.
So what are four through ten?
This is part of an effort to amend the Michigan Constitution. Will we see something to change or eliminate term limits?
That alone should be a non-starter right there!
Will we see something to expand the FOIA laws to cover the Michigan Legislature? Will we see them amend the Michigan Constitution to exempt themselves?
There are a lot of unanswered questions which should have been addressed from the get-go.
Another issue here is this; If LG Calley is trying to show his leadership skills, then why use this route?
The Michigan Legislature can just as easily accomplish this (and faster), if they are so inclined. It’s all clearly spelled in black and white under Article 12 § 1 of the Michigan Constitution. A real leader should’ve been able to accomplish this without any difficulty, if this was his actual goal.
So again, why use the petition method?
On a related note, when Michigan Democratic Party Chair Brandon Dillon was asked for his comments on this, he stated that,
“I find the whole idea of Brian Calley coming to clean up the establishment pretty comical. He is the establishment. His party has been in total control for the last seven years.”
Like it or not, he does make a very valid point.
We’ve seen the Michigan Legislature raise gas taxes and vehicle registration fees against the clear direction of Michigan Taxpayers otherwise. They have gone back on their word to cut the Michigan Income Tax. They have taken money from the general fund and used it to save the DIA from being sold off (aka Detroit Bailout). They have bailed out the Detroit Public School system, which already receives a disproportionate share of state per pupil funding as it is. They have jammed through Snydercaid and they have passed legislation to benefit one Detroit businessman; Dan Gilbert.
When Michigan Republicans are motivated to do something…things get done.
Or, are those (few) examples I’ve mentioned above an indication of a much larger problem in the 2018 election?
Finally, who is he working with on this and who is paying for it.That information is curiously “missing” from the website and mentioned nowhere in the video.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction that LG Calley isn’t doing this all on his own and out of his own pocket.
The plain and obvious fact that information like this (among other things) is being held back does not bode well for the motives of one LG Calley.
Without more information to go on, even though this sounds great on the surface, the best course of action here is to wait until all of the information is made available so that we can make a truly informed decision on whether to fully support this or let it crash and burn because of the baggage attached to it.
No catch... Lt. Ausperg mandate #NeverTrump is "low energy."
Grow up, KG
KG you're just funning us--What's the Catch? HAHAHAHAHA--I'm not laughing at you--I'm laughing at the absurd notion that Calley thinks he has a political future. There's a JUGE movement going on--a silent but deadly movement. Thank goodness he's stuck in RINO mode. This is gonna be fun I'm tell'n ya, real fun. And we've got a front row seat.
A "Clean up Michigan politics" push from the Lt. Gov. who looks eerily like TV's "Better Call Saul" Goodman? Why not just watch vanity editorial ads from Geoff Feiger?
