    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

Troy Councilman Dane Slater was officially appointed mayor Monday night until November 2013 amid controversy over whether the city must hold an election to name a new mayor.

The selection followed failed attempts earlier Monday by two city residents to file to run for a mayoral election. Monday was the deadline to file.

"I'm not ready to support any candidate as interim mayor until we get a resolution from the state," Councilman Doug Tietz said, referring to the controversy with the state over how the city must choose a mayor after the recall of Mayor Janice Daniels. He and Councilman Wade Fleming opposed Slater's appointment Monday.

The state's elections director told the city in a letter Nov. 16 that it must hold a special election Feb. 26, and not wait until 2013 to fill the mayor's position.

This is the final product that Lansing, and Party Nerdpublicans have created.  When it comes to the central planning schemes using Federal Debt dollars being placed under deficit spending scrutiny locally, the establishment clause of Two Wings Same Bird Party politics will slay those who are not in their exact likeness.  We watched the MI-GOP Star Chamber attempt to do this to Kerry Bentivolio, and they have had their "compassionate conservative" Operation Hummingbird way with Mayor Janice Daniels.

The Republicrats quietus will wear the face of Mitt Romney, and Rick Snyder, for eternity.

So, who do they interview about "divisive groups"?  None other than rabble-rouser, Linda Kajma.

Linda Kajma stood on a chair with a beer in her hand, exultant in Daniels' apparent ouster.

"I've lived in the city for 38 years. Don't mess with my city," she said. Speaking figuratively to Daniels, she added: "You can put on your red hat and get on the next train out of Troy."

Yeaaaah.  Nothing like having a Romney supporter aiding the misfit Lefty Big Spenders.  Put on your ushanka, Linda, and stay in Troy.

Lefty's Waste More Money in City of Troy

The City of Troy and state election officials have different ideas of when and how to fill the seat of former Mayor Janice Daniels.

After Daniels' Nov. 6 recall, the City Council appointed Mayor Pro-Tem Dean Slater to fill her seat until the next scheduled election in November 2013. But state election officials challenged the length of the appointment, saying state law required a special election be held to fill the seat.

The special election would be in February and all candidates wanting to file candidacy forms have until Monday to do so.

    ....

"We just want to abide by the law, whatever it is," he [Councilman Fleming] said. "We want to do the right thing, but it's not enough notice to vet people, or to even get their applications in. It would be very difficult to comply."

What a set-up to cover for Nansee. via The Detroit News

Former state Sen. Nancy Cassis said Friday she has filed enough petition signatures to get on the ballot for a special primary to fill the seat left vacant when U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter resigned from Congress.

Cassis of Novi said she filed 2,000 signatures, twice the minimum needed to qualify for the election. Also filing Friday for the Republican nomination are Kenneth Crider, with 1,100 signatures, Steve King, with 1,200, and Carolyn Kavanagh, with 1,276. All three are from Livonia.

The City of Livonia should be ashamed.  David Curson who?  Nice 'deal' with Brewer, Bobby.

You'd think that, after the shellacking that Saul Anuzis received a couple of months ago, the Michigan Republican Party would've got the hint that the grassroots in this here state isn't putting up with their crap anymore.  Given that there's already a project underway to break the cycle of abusive behavior of state party leadership by replacing the corrupted party leadership (all the way down to the county party level, where necessary), you'd think that the elites would consider themselves on notice that getting their RINO asses in line is going to be the only way that they save their skins during the internal party elections that will be following the November general election.

Apparently, someone at MIGOP didn't get the memo.

Thad McQuitter Piles On Taxpayers: Lt. Autism Insurance Mandate Calls For Sept. 5 Special Election

    via The Detroit News

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley on Tuesday called for a special election to fill the seat of U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, who resigned suddenly on Friday.

The special primary will be Sept. 5, with a special election to fill the remainder of McCotter's term held in conjunction with the Nov. 6 general election.
    ....

A special election would come with new costs for the Wayne and Oakland County municipalities in the district.

According to the governor's office, state election officials estimate it'll cost local government $650,000 for a special election.

Oakland County estimates their costs alone would be in the six figures to print new ballots and for election supplies. Locals would be on the hook for paying for election inspectors, overtime, postage to mail out absentee  ballots and applications and paying for elections publication costs.

Confounding the problem is the special election would apply to constituents in the current 11th District Congressional seat, though the voter databases and voter registrations have been adjusted to reflect the new redistricting boundaries in place for the upcoming Aug. 7 primary elections.

    Rest here

Nice, eh?  Mass confusion created for an establishment player's write-in campaign.

19th Senate Special: Mike Nofs makes it official

Today is the day.  As of 10 o'clock this morning, former sheriff, state trooper and state representative Mike Nofs is an official candidate in this fall's 19th state Senate district special election.

The 19th, you'll remember, was technically vacated at the beginning of the year when Mark Schauer broke his word to his constituents and took a seat in Congress, becoming a part of what polling data consistently tells us is one of the least popular legislative bodies in American history.

Our readers in Calhoun and Jackson Counties, their friends and neighbors, have been without representation in Michigan's upper legislative chamber for the last one-hundred-plus days and will be until the end of 2009.  The Granholm-Cherry administration, fearing a potential partisan swing in the District and an expanded GOP majority in the Senate, delayed announcing a special election for months.

Remember, they've got a lot more than one Senate seat to lose.  Whoever winds up being the incumbent in the 19th come the 2010 general elections will have a leg-up on the challenger.  Should the Democrats lose the 19th their path to taking control of the Senate becomes significantly more difficult with nothing less than the holy grail of legislative tasks at stake... redistricting.

Whoever controls the Supreme Court and the state Senate come January 2011 will control legislative redistricting and partisan electoral potential for the next decade.

The man who has the liberals spooked?  Mike Nofs.
