Ummm, maybe it would have been a good idea to read that fine print?By KG One, Section News
In his fanaticism to achieve one of his goals (Michigan Taxpayers and the Michigan Legislature, who needs `em), Gov. Snyder overlooked one very important detail: Nothing is ever truly "free" from the federal government.
Not to fear, he's got a scapegoat to blame for this one. So who is the great nerdy one mad at now?
And what will Michigan Taxpayers potentially be on the hook for?
After Gov. Snyder went off on his own and rammed through an unnecessary new international bridge without any concerns of liability for Michigan, reality hit him squarely in the face like a 2x4.
Speaking to the Detroit Free Press Editorial Board last week, Gov Snyder admitted that the federal government will not pay for the construction of a second set of Customs Facilities for the bridge he wanted so badly. When pressed further Gov. Snyder said,
"The U.S. government has largely taken a position that they don't think they should pay anything for a facility for the United States government." Yes, that's right True Believers. In his quest to bring us something that we do not need, we've got Canada and the federal government to spring for a bridge, access to local freeways, but nowhere for CPB/DHS to stand around and ask us what country we're from, how long we were in Canada and if we're bringing anything back into the US. This is, after all, an international border crossing we're talking about here. Whoops! But don't worry. I mean really. How much would it cost to build a second facility for CPB/DHS? Try about $250-million. Just to give you some comparison about how much of a waste this expenditure is, the I-96 rebuild near Detroit is projected at about $150-million. So did our illustrious governor show just a smidgen of integrity and accept blame for his "oversight"? Nope. Just like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar, Gov. Snyder placed the blame on someone else. That someone being none other than the man whose company offered to pick up the ENTIRE cost of a new bridge in the first place; Manuel "Matty" Moroun. The Free Press tried giving the governor some credibility by digging up lobbyists records to support that assertion, but they overlooked one slight problem. Their search only turned up recent donations to Republicans. A party that only controls one chamber of the legislature was somehow able to get the federal government to balk at plunking down a quarter of a billion dollars on a public works project. Ummmm, yeah. The same people whose spines turn to Jell-O® when the topic of balanced budgets and continuing resolutions come up for a vote are going to throw up unforeseen pitfalls for Gov. Snyder to fall into. Anyone here wanna buy some prime Florida real estate? Stay tuned...
