Why are we as taxpayers paying dues for this organization?

Its sole purpose is to find a way to extract more money from people who buy things under the guise of "Fairness." Formed in 2000, its "about us" page says:

"The goal of this effort is to find solutions for the complexity in state sales tax systems that resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court holding (Bellas Hess v. Illionis and Quill Corp. v. North Dakota) that a state may not require a seller that does not have a physical presence in the state to collect tax on sales into the state"

First, I should point out that compliance will NEVER be as simple as whatever their ultimate outcome is touted to be.  The burden on small business increases yearly with nearly every law passed by our state legislators, and especially so with the efforts of the US congress and administration.  Unable to absorb new duties/responsibilities as designated by all the elected busy bodies without significant time for compliance measures WILL destroy small business in America; resulting in higher unemployment, and deepening resentment for overreaching government.

"SSUTA moves towards taxation without representation in two ways. First, state lawmakers' authority regarding significant portions of state tax codes is given to an outside entity, moving representation further away from those states' citizens. Second, businesses outside of such states are subjected to taxation - not limited to, but including sales / use tax -  but have no representation in those states' governments."

Recognizing that many 'moderate' elements now lurk for fear of being drawn into arguments they cannot win, there ARE ways to get a pulse on what is being considered. Even the soft conservatives out here are getting the fire-to-the-hand test of loyalty by the governor who doesn't really seem to have ANY center of gravity. When the first answer is always to go back with hands out for more taxes, its an insult to the 'conservative' voter who actually feels some bizarre obligation to support it. When we see this:

"The MIRS subscription newsletter reported Monday that the quadrant leaders "are moving toward a package" that would devote all revenue collected at the gas pump -- including fuel excise and sales taxes -- to roads while boosting the state sales tax by one percent to replace lost revenue currently earmarked for schools and cities."

However, the increasing cost on gasoline and subsequent sales tax windfall provided cover for the fungible nature in which the schools are supported. It allowed other areas of state government to grow, and covered the years of neglect and lack of schools oversight by the legislature. The schools have enough to operate on, but do not have some of the tools in which to better manage what they get.  Snyder's additional sales tax is NOT the way to solve this.

There really has to be a question forming in the minds of even the most ardent Republicans.

We are NOT ATM machines.  How the hell did we get here?

We need to know where you are at.  Is Rick Snyder at all trustworthy to see through another 4 years? Would readers of this site vote for a Democrat to prove a point? Would a third party bid be a better way of giving Snyder's unpredictable 'antics'?

Internet retailers that have a physical presence or affiliated companies in Michigan, such as Amazon.com, would have to collect sales taxes on purchases under legislative proposals debated Wednesday in a House committee.

The House Tax Policy Committee held its first day of public testimony on Republican-sponsored legislation that would change the definition of legal presence for out-of-state companies that sell merchandise toMichiganians on the Web. Amazon owns Brilliance Audio in Grand Haven.

The Republican response:

"These are not bills that constitute new taxes, rather they're measures that aid in (the collection of) taxes that are already owed," said state Rep. Rob VerHeulen, R-Walker.

Blow it out your ass, Rob.  If you don't have the funds currently, it's a new tax.  And, it's a nightmare of paperwork for business.

Rep. Jon Switalski, D-Warren, said the bill sponsors can't sugar coat the end result of taxing Internet purchases after years of Michigan consumers enjoying tax-free Web shopping.

"We talk about this as fairness ... but the reality is people are going to pay more after these bills pass than they're currently paying," he said.

Thank you for your ongoing efforts, Mr. Hagerstrom!  As noted from an mLive screed, it should be highlighted who the Legislator held responsible for the latest MIaGOP Tax Hike scheme on Michigan residents.

A new plan taking shape in the state House, spearheaded by Republican [questionable] Rep. Wayne Schmidt of Traverse City, is expected to include increased gasoline taxes and registration fees. The proposal also would exempt fuel purchases from the state's six percent sales tax, which is collected at the pump but is not used to fix roads.

Congratulations, District 104 voters.  Feeling dumb about sending Wayne "Show Pony" back for another term in Lansing, yet?  I doubt it.  But wait, there's more!

House Speaker Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, signaled support for the plan on Thursday, telling reporters that the legislature must "be committed to solving the full problem," including making sure that all taxes paid at the pump go toward roads.
