MACKINAC ISLAND - Nearly 2,000 Republicans attended the 29th Biennial Mackinac , Leadership Conference, participating in dozens of events that energized activists from across the state.
"It's been an amazing conference," said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak. "The enthusiasm from our grassroots and from our elected officials is outstanding, and our attendees experienced it first-hand." "This conference will pay huge dividends for our state and our country," Schostak said. "We will work with our leaders and our grassroots to continue to reinvent Michigan." This year's conference incorporated numerous events, including addresses and appearances by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Congressmen Thad McCotter, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus. Besides Snyder, Michigan's Republican leadership on the island included Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, Attorney General Bill Schuette, House Speaker Jase Bolger, Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, and Congressmen Dave Camp, Candice Miller, Dan Benishek, Fred Upton, Tim Walberg, Bill Huizenga, and Justin Amash. Many elected officials participated in panel discussions focused on making Michigan a job-growth engine.
"Republican activists had an outstanding conversation and we will continue the discussion throughout the upcoming year. Our relentless positive action continues to drive success for all Michigan families." In other news: Herman Cain won the Straw Poll In Florida. Whatever it is that CS does on occasion.
Watching the sidebar, one of the #RightMi hashtag users (designated conservative) tweeted out this video of Thad McCotter from 2008 when there was a full house of Democrats to appreciate his creative edginess. Enjoy.
Oh and for some more Sunday funnies, I posted a recent Michigan GOP press release below the line. (2 comments, 422 words in story) Full Story By Rougman, Section News
In an effort to bridge the timeline between now and the next election, practical Republicans have said they'd love them some many hundreds of billions of dollars in added debt over the short term in order to budget an additional $7 trillion in debt over the next ten years.
This is the new face of fiscal and political practicality. Now, even the impractical among us knew that the Boehner bill, as written, was as dead on arrival as the dermis underneath a Nancy Pelosi botoxic expression. We'll just have to wait and see what the mouldering Harry Reid can do to the bill before he sends it back to Boehner. Wherever this leads, many of us in the tea party are being considered "impractical" or "hobbits" by the establishment GOP because we are not falling in line behind our christened party leaders in their Orwellian attempts to rein in spending. But, from an equally practical standpoint, what evidence do we hobbits have from these GOP leaders that they have any intention of cutting overall spending when, according to the lexicon they employ, a $1 trillion cut in spending in reality is an $8 trillion increase in spending over ten years? Let's go back a few years. It was a Republican president with great Republican support that gave us No Child Left Behind and the prescription drug benefit. TARP was a bipartisan fiscal calamity. Every one of these examples have the sticky fingerprints of John Boehner all over them. (6 comments, 834 words in story) Full Story By JGillman, Section News
Its pretty hard to stay away from the national issues sometimes.
There is the inability of our leadership to just say "forget about it" when their opponents suggest lifting caps, and spending more of our children's soon to be taxed heavily again inheritances. There is a weakness when it comes to doing the right thing like throwing out a few babies with bathwater. There is a real lack of courage coming from our Republicans IMO. But I am not yet giving up. Sure, I would like to see the cap held. No more! Stop! Cease! But in the spirit of "compromise" the house gave a little. In fact, the bill sent through would have still allowed a minimum of $2.5 trillion increase in the debt, adding both principle and of course the expected financing measures. And the senate said nah, not good enough. So frankly, to heck with them. Its time that Michigan's congressional delegation simply takes a stand. One that is solidly for NO increase in the debt. None. Nada. More below ~ (5 comments, 753 words in story) Full Story By JGillman, Section News
We have reported on the mailers sent out and the Michigan Democrat Party taking advantage of the independent candidate Glenn Wilson's position as spoiler in the MI CD1 race. In a somewhat interesting twist.. Independent spoiler candidate Glenn Wilson thanks the Democrats for spending PAC money on his behalf. The Wilson Campaign released this:
"The Glenn Wilson campaign would like to thank the Michigan Democratic Party for sending out the mailer regarding Wilson's stance on irresponsible government Spending." Some things just write themselves.. From the same campaign that has elements giving grief to Dr. Dan Benishek for accepting Republican money (he IS the Republican candidate.. go figure) we find the Wilson campaign eagerly lapping up the spilled milk of the Michigan Donkeys in a last minute attempt to remain relevant. The Democrat attempt to split the vote's cost? Estimated to be about $30,000.00 according to the Wilson Camp. Consider it a gift. But the Irony isn't lost on this writer.. Glenn Wilson just cost me another $25. Money I really didn't expect to have to spend.
Not that I didn't want to support Benishek, or think he was not worth the $25 contribution. No.. Rather I didn't expect he would HAVE to spend a great amount of capital to win a race that should be so eminently winnable given the way in which Bart Stupak handled his affairs. The spending levels shouldn't HAVE to be so high, as the corrective juggernaut which is fueled by a responsible government sentiment is just now fully underway. I must give full credit to Jason Allen for his understanding the consequence of fighting among ourselves, and what copuld be viewed as self destructing because of a stroked ego. He took the high road. He understood oh-so-well, how its possible to wreck all that you stand for by allowing a personal, but misplaced sense of self to override a bit of common sense. How splitting hairs over 'perfect' stands on some issues before a congressional candidate, might be used only to split votes in an election. And maybe lose a few gains that were made in the process. I really hate to have to go here..
As many of you might have noticed I have not really made a mention of Glenn Wilson when covering Benishek, McDowell, and the fight to take the CD1 seat back from the lefties. My 'omission' Stemming from the realization that any more attention to the man who might siphon votes from Dan Benishek, might fuel Wilson's efforts, and guarantee the end that still might happen; a McDowell win. Funny, how it's something that I may well have railed about in years past watching debates that did not include 3rd party candidates. What is not funny, is the reality that Glenn Wilson is not Stupid. Nor are many of his followers. Yet they continue onward in a path that leads them to more of what they might claim to oppose. Any gains by team Wilson mean losses for Benishek. They speak to the same issues, and let there be no doubt McDowell, and the lying Michigan Democrats will take advantage of that. A Donkey could well hold the CD1 seat because of Wilson. But speaking to the same folks, and being the same.. have very different meanings.
