So much to talk about, so little space. Alright, so, technically there's all the space in the world since this is a blogging community, not a newspaper and none of us are confined to word counts or column size restrictions... so let me rephrase. So much to talk about, so limited my ability to juggle multiple topics in one blog post while maintaining some semblance of focus.
Hmm. Not quite as pithy. Nevermind. Besides, you get the point. I mean, we could discuss General Motors escape from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Ivory Tower even manages to poke a little fun at the Obama administration, which is a little bit jarring on first blush, but nice for a switch. We could discuss the Associated Press's revelation of additional shady business from elected Democrats in the Motor City. Shady unless you consider using emergency funds to purchase a $1,600 floral arrangement good stewardship. Then there's the Detroit News taking the Granholm-Cherry administration out to the woodshed for lying about Michigan's graduation rates. (And oh so much more... please read on...) This morning's Ivory Tower points out an interesting tidbit about Lansing's budget process, drawing attention to the calendar as they remind readers that this is usually just about the week when we get an agreement between the House and the Senate and a plan for the next fiscal year. You know, before the tax and spenders arrived in the Capitol City in force and just plain lost their minds.
Apparently whatever spending sickness is afflicting lawmakers managed to make it's way onto east-bound I-96, too, and landed smack dab in the FREEP's editorial room. The same column which they use to caution against irresponsible budgeting (lest our state bond rating be negatively affected) also contains the Ed Board's suggestion that Lansing spend irresponsibly.
A good strategy would be to spread the available stimulus money in roughly even chunks over the next two budget years. No, a good strategy would be to avoid one-time-fixes. You know, the kind used by former Republican legislative majorities and lamented vocally for years by the Granholm-Cherry administration? Because these problems... these massive multi-billion dollar deficits... they aren't going to go away before that bailout funding does. In fact, they're likely going to get much worse. The Detroit News reports this morning on an often overlooked budgetary byproduct of massive auto layoffs... suddenly vacant industrial space. See, the thing about vacant industrial space is that it's vacant. There's no one there. In other words, there goes another big dollar source of tax revenue. Read on... Rush Limbaugh said he'd like to bulldoze Flint and kill everyone in the City. That according to Democratic state Representative Woodrow Stanley.
Responding to remarks Limbaugh made yesterday on his top rated afternoon radio program where he agreed with Genesee County Treasurer (and Democrat) Dan Kildee's suggestion that abandoned buildings and vacant space be torn down, Stanley and half of the Lefties in F-Town just plumb lost their minds. The Flint Journal Reports:
"Cities are not just buildings or concrete or trees -- cities are people," he said. "You're making reference to people and that is not appropriate at all." I don't like to devolve into personal insults and name-calling. I think by in large the entire community here at RightMichigan has been pretty good about sticking to issues, at least on this site, but Woodrow... you're either being hyper-partisan, intentionally dense a mile beyond the point of absurdity or you, sir, are an idiot. Period. Let's recap... (Please read on...) (16 comments, 652 words in story) Full Story By Nick, Section News
Call this the morning of surprises! And they're big ones, and important ones too... I'm not even going to mention the fact that the Michigan Wolverines look to have moved off the bubble and on their way to their first NCAA Tournament in over a decade. (OK, so maybe I'm going to mention that once but that's it, promise.)
Fair warning, before you read the rest of this post you're going to want to sit down. If you're driving and doing the mobile thing its safer for the rest of us if you pull over to the side of the road. Shock and highway speeds generally don't mix well. Safe and secure? Great. Check this out. It looks like most elected Democrats in Lansing, while begging the State Officers Compensation Commission to cut their pay starting in 2011 have and continue to refuse to return any of their pay voluntarily here and now. SURPRISE! Read on... (3 comments, 823 words in story) Full Story |
