It has taken me too long perhaps, to write about the humiliation the Big 10, and especially Michigan's teams which suffered in Saturday's play. At the end of all this, at least one thing was done that may see an answer to the question "WTF Michigan?" It probably would have been enough to see the defensive coordinator removed, but in the end, it was always Rich Rod's gig, so.. Blah.
In an interesting side note, The Michigan View has a great column that reflects on this, and its comparison to politics. in "Why we love sports, (and hate politics)," Payne compares the hate fest for failing sports programs, and the seemingly out of place support and excuse making our press gives to the politicos that suck. He writes: " "Why wouldn't Rich Rodriguez be fired? In three years, he didn't win a single important game," penned Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press. Wow.. Not so sure the wind is at Snyder's back, but if it is, then it might help douse some of the ecological insanity that Granholm has implemented in Michigan during her reign. I don't even have a coordinator to throw blame at in this case.. more below.. (4 comments, 929 words in story) Full Story By JGillman, Section News
Justice Maura Corrigan's possible departure from the Supreme Court is an uncomfortable one at best. As a federalist, she represents a more conservative tone on the state's highest court that is more in line with those folks who have an interest in the integrity of constitutional law, versus judging based on the most popular view of the day.
Its expected that she will be asked to serve as head of Michigan's Department of Human Services by Rick Snyder. It follows an apparent championing of family and health issues as she has earned the following awards (among others): Oakland County Champion of Children Award (2010); Michigan Children's Award (2008); U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Innovative Partnerships (OCS) Award (2008); Michigan Family Support Council Judicial Award (2006); Vista Maria's Child Advocate of the Year Award (2005); the Congressional Coalition on Adoption "Angels in Adoption" Award (2005); the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (OCS) Award for significant improvements to Michigan's Child Support Enforcement Program (2002) It follows that her passion for Michigan families and child welfare would lead her to accept such a position, even after serving in one of the highest offices in the state. We will hate to lose here there however. ~ More Below ~ (2 comments, 495 words in story) Full Story By JGillman, Section News
Today, Snyder, Schuette, Johnson, and a host of others took their positions up as wished upon them by the voters in this state.
Rick Snyder: "We need to stop being divisive and be inclusive. We have spent too much time fighting among ourselves, and have become our own worst enemy," Tell me you didn't write that yourself, and that you borrowed it from the Center for Michigan. Inclusive perhaps, if it is inclusive of the reality that leftist policies brought us here. This "moment of opportunity" you mentioned at another point, is indeed that. Sir, If you go down the road of everybody gets their pet project saved, we won't be using that opportunity very well. This is an opportunity to perhaps share a little of the reality the taxpayers who are NOT employed in state government, must endure. De-certifying the unions would be a good start in helping the State employees KEEP their jobs. I was the worst critic of the nerd before he won in the primary. I must admit however, I have been pretty silent on Snyder's expected performance because I think we can make a lot of noise that doesn't much matter at this point. When he screws up, we will be right there. The event today had Snyder talking about his family's prior service in the capitol. His maternal grandfather apparently was a custodian there. kind of a neat story actually, demonstrating the level in which a family can grow in Michigan, and in this nation once revered as the basket of opportunity of the world. Opportunity in Michigan and nationwide destroyed by the type of leftist Marxism exhibited by Snyder's predecessor and the wrecking crew known as our current federal administration. We can at least start the healing now. ~ more below ~ (6 comments, 722 words in story) Full Story By JGillman, Section News
Justice Bob Young.
Listening to him this morning on the radio reminds me of why I have never been more sure he is the right man for the position he holds. A Constitutional judge who sees the law as more of a static, not to be bent by whim or "empathy". He described the president's claim that empathy has a place in the court, as wrong. He has pointed out he has had to face down 'feelings' in favor of rulings based on the State constitution. He also mentioned an issue I have talked about before. Wayne v Hathcock. 'Public GOOD' v 'Public Use' a case which overturned Poletown, and the empathy argument for 'good'. Bob Young A solid constitutional Justice I hope is around for a very long time. Michigan, not too long ago was recognized as having one of the finest state Supreme courts in the nation. That is.. until Cliff Taylor was replaced due to a combination of occurrences. First the Socialist Democrat Base was energized enough, and money was flowing through the Democrat coffers like nobody's business, (and indeed, in some circumstances it apparently still is NOBODY'S business.. Hello Jon Stryker.)And THEN there was the video lie about Taylor, where an Actor portrayed him as sleeping at the bench. And now Brewer may have hired another actor to play a sleeping judge again.
No wonder the Democrats receive such strong support from Hollywood. Its a matter of employment.. Aside from that.. The make-up of the court, and the addition of Alton Davis, currently has it looking at past decisions for reconsideration. They want to change history. The "Best State Supreme Court In the nation may well see a bit of revisionist justice. And the loss of Justice Young would make it a sure thing. And I am not talking about that cool little hole in the wall community in the Upper Peninsula.
Four weeks out from the general election, and we may have a problem with a double digit lead that Rick Snyder has, over Virg Bernero. Snyder's lead through Rasmussen as of a couple weeks ago was 13 points, and it is unlikely (barring a name and gender change along with a discovery he is a Canadian plant) that Rick Snyder will drop below the 50 point mark. Private polling commissioned by a political source shows the lead may have grown even more. And it presents more of a problem for Republicans than Democrats. Received the affidavit.
Contrary to the published version of Mr Davis' filing HERE, it seems he accepted a nomination by the Michigan Democrat party. While writing this, the copy of the Democrat nominations arrived for verification. He was indeed officially nominated by the Democrat party. There can be no challenge to his ability to run. However, he does not meet the incumbency rule in the state constitution as he should not file as incumbent because of his short term less than 180 days. The thing that drew my attention to this originally, is how it is strange that Denise Langford, is SHOWN as the only NOMINATED SC candidate by Democrats on the candidate roster for the state. The constitution on this issue has an interesting sidebar by the way. (379 words in story) Full Story By JGillman, Section News
There is this thing called the rule of law. And whether it is a small font designation as we have discussed recently, or something so major as an ability to be seated on the supreme court, we must try to follow as best we can. When we KNOW the law, it shall be our guide. And when we do not, and find it by coincidence of our situation, we ought to consider a way to rectify our mistakes and mitigate the effect.
Shall I be the first to cast stones? Not in the classic sense. God has made me but one man among many. Many men who have differing opinions, but come together at points to agree on how best we serve each other in fairness and recognizing the natural born rights we all share. Part of those agreements make up the law to be followed by all the citizens. I must atone personally for my own mistakes, and must also follow rules previously established, else I pay a price in some manner. I make no claim to be technically or morally superior. But I will announce when I see something that is wrong. Especially when there still is time for it to be fixed. (2 comments, 814 words in story) Full Story
