That queasy feeling in the pit of your stomach has a name.
Betrayal. While we have suffered the inane punditry destroying our favored candidates a "plan B" has been in the works. For all the insipid questions in debates for our Republican presidential candidates, we get the reward of having the "establishment" plot to undermine the will of the conservative voters. That special convention, which has as a possibility, a none of the above candidate somehow pooping out. When the favored son of the blue bloods saw Michigan going away from him, the chill appears to have run the back of Republican elites, and those who would like us to repeat McCain's 2008 performance; the left. Mitt Romney was never supposed to have the kind of push back, and should have easily cruised to nominating victory. There should have been no doubt, right? Except times have changed. Some folks. don't like it so much Even as I type this, Donald Trump is calling the little local radio station in a desperate stumping for Mitt. Their hairs are up, and the self destruct button has been uncapped. The convention talk has begun. But not all in the political machine agree with this plan. Things have a way of developing fast in the conservative driven Republican Presidential Primary.
Once considered a long shot, Rick Santorum has taken a 33 to 27% lead over Mitt Romney the presumed front runner in his home state. From USA today: An American Research Group poll shows Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, leading Romney 33% to 27% among likely GOP voters. Santorum's lead over Romney is 15 percentage points in a Michigan survey by Public Policy Polling. Not surprising at all. As expected, the collapse of Newt's surge will coincide well with the realization by many that Romneycare IS Obamacare. Romney for his part never breaking loose from the 25-30% base of centrists who would prefer the candidate with the right amount of money, over candidates with the right ideas. Still developing. When campaigns gather information from strategists, one of the most annoying things I notice is the importance placed on poll-tested buzz words. In a Republican primary, where every candidate seeks to gain the vote of its base, the biggest buzz word is 'conservative.'
During the 2010 elections, newly active conservatives (the tea party) worked to unseat Democrats who played the big buzz word but then voted for the wholesale take over of the health industry. They also worked to primary (negate incumbency) life-time anointed Republicans who hadn't really been scrutinized in the past. The actions of the tea party showed they didn't need to be told who is more conservative, they understood instinctively. One of my favorite quotes from Margaret Thatcher is, "Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't." I have used that quote in the past referring to conservative candidates. If you have to tell people you are a conservative, you aren't. But Mitt Romney really stepped in it at CPAC. I've read that he was supposed to say he was a conservative governor, and that he ad-libbed the word 'severely.' That may or not be true, but to use both words suggests neither have meaning. Given the endorsement by the over ego-ed Human Resource manager Trump, its fun to note he was not for Romney before, but now he is.
Where's Romney? (7 comments) Comments >> By JGillman, Section News
One cannot turn on the news it seems without wondering how the reality shows that have captivated so many over the years escaped the television and made it to one of the most important events we patronize.
Each political event happening daily, further embellished by speculation or commentary of the trained pundits of pop culture. Each misstep of the character of the day amplified by the 24 hour news cycle stacking opinion for a better view of the tragedy that is sometimes humanity. Not in that we fail, but rather that we titillate and secret our joy about the failures that bring about a new player in the game of the day. Somehow our darkened souls must find comfort in the perpetual failings that only a well oiled machinery of media attention can accentuate. We have reached the bottom. I do not intend to remain at there however. I will not sit idly by while the character of good folk continues to be sacrificed to create the drama for next week's lust for tragedy. I ask each of you to consider what happens if the Marxist in the white house is allowed to desecrate our great country beyond 2012. Between his utter disregard for the Congress, our constitution, or private property, a term fully hardened by a "mandate" of a win, would mean the end of the US as we know it. Go below. As the result of some extraordinary oversight, your faithful Wizard has snagged a media credential and will be blogging the GOP debate tonight. Stationed in the media center, I may have the opportunity to ask some of the candidates or their surrogates questions during the post-debate spin-o-rama. Received this today:
Dear Michigan Republicans, I prefer a real primary where substance wins over who is next in line. The "sender" being Bill Schuette, undoubtedly aware his name is being used, has likely not seen even seen this. Nice machine you have there MI GOP. You should note there are a number of better choices available for our selection in 2012. A number of folks who ACTUALLY have principles. Bill, I know you watch this from time to time. I would back off your endorsement, or just give in to the Obamacare mandate like a good party loyalist. Hell, Snyder doesn't even have your back. Mitt will likely do nothing to remove it from the books. Modify? Yeah probably, but remove? Nah. Ain't gonna happen. The party is not over, but it will be different. Think about that MR gover.. err Attorney General. (4 comments) Comments >> By JGillman, Section News
Romney had a few things to say last night. One of them prompting the Michigan Fair Tax folks to set the record straight.
Kalamazoo Sept.13, 2011 - Because a politician or candidate says it, does not make it true. In a response to a question in the September 12 Republican presidential debate about the FairTax Mitt Romney stated that the FairTax will help the rich and poor but hurt the middle class. Because the question was asked only of Mitt Romney, no other candidate had the opportunity to respond to Romney's statement and the public was left with only the unsubstantiated statement by Romney. Some of America's brightest economists have conducted studies on the FairTax that show that Americans of every income level and family status fare better under the FairTax than under the current income tax system. There is no study by any reputable economist that shows otherwise. More Below the line. (9 comments, 290 words in story) Full Story
