    Romney Mis-states FairTax Impact

Romney had a few things to say last night.  One of them prompting the Michigan Fair Tax folks to set the record straight.

Kalamazoo Sept.13, 2011 - Because a politician or candidate says it, does not make it true.

In a response to a question in the September 12 Republican presidential debate about the FairTax Mitt Romney stated that the FairTax will help the rich and poor but hurt the middle class.  Because the question was asked only of Mitt Romney, no other candidate had the opportunity to respond to Romney's statement and the public was left with only the unsubstantiated statement by Romney.

Some of America's brightest economists have conducted studies on the FairTax that show that Americans of every income level and family status fare better under the FairTax than under the current income tax system.  There is no study by any reputable economist that shows otherwise.

    More Below the line.

In hearings held this past August by the U.S. House of Representatives' Ways and Means Committee, testimony was presented by economists Dr. Laurence Kotlikoff (Boston University) and Dr. David Tuerck (Beacon Hill Institute) that the FairTax will benefit all Americans by rapidly growing the economy and creating jobs in the U.S. for Americans.

Politicians and candidates making unsubstantiated statements do a disservice to the American public by misleading them, thereby leaving the public in the position of having to make decisions with false information.  In the event that Mr. Romney has some evidence to substantiate his claim, the Michigan FairTax Association would like to know of it so as to determine its validity.

. . . that there's a concerted effort amongst progressives of every stripe (and I'm firmly convinced that Romney's one of those) to discredit the FairTax by any means necessary.

I noticed that the FairTax question was not posed to Herman Cain, the one candidate in the gallery who is an open advocate of it.  (I fully expect that a similar rebuttal, perhaps in more detail, will be coming from his campaign in due course.)

This would be a good question for Mr. Cain. (5.00 / 1) (#3)

Because a few days ago, I didn't hear anything about a "Fair Tax", only his "9-9-9" plan which isn't even remotely close to the "Fair Tax"
