S.O.S. says recall has signatures . Dillon desperate!

    Friends,

This morning, the MI Secretary of State issued their report certifying that Rose Bogaert and the Wayne County Taxpayers Association HAD collected enough signatures to force MI House Speaker Andy Dillon to face a recall election on November 4th.

Last week, a federal judge ordered the MI Secretary of State to review over 2,000 signatures on petitions to recall Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon for supporting the  largest tax increase in state history. The signatures were not previously counted, but the federal judge ruled that state laws used to previously invalidate the signatures were unconstitutional - and he ordered a recount.

Speaker Dillon's last hope to avoid a recall election rests with his appeal to the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. Dillon desperately hopes that the Court will act fast - the ballots are sent to the printer this coming Monday with the recall question on them.

Dillon is in deep trouble - he's behind for the first time in the game, it's fourth down and 30 yards to go with just a few seconds left on the clock. But this is NOT a game. Granholm and Dillon's tax hike, Michigan's economy, lost jobs. It's about setting a precedent for ALL the politicians in Lansing that citizens can, and will, hold even the highest and mightiest politicians accountable for their actions.

Congratulations to Rose Bogaert, the Wayne County Taxpayers Association, and everyone who has helped them overcome so much so far!

Speaker Andy Dillon to face a recall election on November 4th

So this is good but the fat lady won't be able to sing until the 6th circuit rules even if the ruling comes after Nov

So even if the Dillion recall appears on the ballot, the 6th circuit ruling could make a recall vote void if it rules in Dillon's favor

I checked the Oral Argument calendar though Sept. 18th and didn't see anything and I don't have an aceess code to check the Docket Calendar

Does anyone know when the 6th circuit could hear Dillion's pending appeal?

    Dillon Recall (none / 0) (#2)

Even if the recall makes the ballot, which is very much in doubt, what will have been gained?  You don't really believe Dillon's constituents, the people who are actually registered to vote in his district, are going to recall him in a November general election, do you?  Dillon will easily win re-election.  Several hundred thousand dollars will have been raised to push these recalls without a single person being recalled from office.  Where did all that money go?

For the average Michigan family, this "largest tax increase in history" amounts to about $4/week.  That's less than half of the increase in our cable bills this year and far far less than the increase most of us are paying in gasoline and home heating costs.

    Tax Increase (none / 0) (#8)

Again, no tax increase could not have been possible without the cooperation of Sen. Bishop and the Senate Republican Caucus.  Republicans went along with a tax increase because there was no will on there part to make 1.5 billion in cut either, cuts that would have been far more noticeable to many Michiganders than the tax increase was.  As we've seen from state budgets over the past 10 years and from Washington, Republicans are just as willing to spend as Democrats are, they're just more hesitant to pay for it.  That reflects the public will.  No one likes tax increases, but we would have heard far more discontent with 1.5 billon in spending cuts than with the tax increase.

One of the little reported items about last fall's tax negotiations is that Dillon preferred to use the income tax as the rememdy rather than create a service tax as well.  The service tax was a Senate Republican idea that Dillon consented to in a compromise.

One of the best tax ideas to come forward in the past legislative session is the concept of a progressive fair tax such as that being pushed by Rep. Sheen.  It would eliminate the income tax, personal property tax and most business taxes.  The concept is dear to the heart of many fiscal conservatives.  Yet, it has very little support in the Republican Senate.
