  • Your New Scoop Site

    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    Were Elections Being Held Hostage?

Add "Wikipedia Contributing Editor" to the list of things I do that I don't get paid for.  It started around mid-November of last year, with me noticing that a certain biographical page really needed to be updated with recent events, which I initially did anonymously (before realizing that I might as well create an account if I'm going to be doing this regularly).  Of course, I'm now at the point where there's just under three dozen Wikipedia articles on my watchlist (which is steadily expanding), and the pages for Michigan gubernatorial election, 2014 and United States Senate election in Michigan, 2014 currently sit in the "top eight" on the most frequently visited pages that show up every time I open a new tab in my Google Chrome browser (right now at positions #6 and #7, respectively).  I'm also doing the heavy lifting for a major restructuring of the United States House of Representatives elections in Michigan, 2014 article.

And go figure that, in the process of researching for a project that's only tangentially related, I learned a little something yesterday about yet another unnecessary snag created by the recent federal shutdown.

An interesting piece happened to turn up on Roll Call regarding the number of former SoS entering U.S. Senate races.

"We may have decent name ID, but it's weak brand ID. That was something I discovered when I ran," Grayson continued. "Despite the higher profile, it's not like it's a natural pivot into the next statewide race. And I think sometimes that puts us in a bit of a tough spot, because there's this perception that maybe we're stronger candidates than we really are."

The U.S. Senate Historical Office does not maintain a list of former secretaries of state who have served in the Senate. But according to data compiled from the National Association of Secretaries of State and other sources, CQ Roll Call identified just 10 senators since 1904 who ever held that position.

Of those 10 - seven Democrats and three Republicans - just three were elected to the Senate as a sitting secretary of state.

So, one has to ask, exactly what has Terri Lynn Land done other than hold a ho-hum title?  I mean besides running an abject failure 2010 campaign with this twice failed anti-2A dope that split the Party just enough to allow Rick Michigan's nose under the tent.  Did a 2014 Senate candidate Terri Lynn Land lead a charge against Obamacare expansion in Michigan, known as Snydercaid?  Nope.  If you believe so, please, provide a link showing anywhere she did.  It's not like Terri, and her hubby don't have the coin and didn't have the time to bird dog the Nerd bus crisscrossing the state when JenniRick embarked on his Tour de Harassment.  Bottom line.  Where the Hell is Terri Lynn Land?!?!

Pick up the house phone please, you have 110 Representatives anxiously awaiting.

Perhaps speaking to 38 would have been easier. However next week, there will be a reconciliation between the Senate amended version and the house version of HB4714.  Of course you realize that failure to stand at such an important juncture, in opposition to Obamacare, would not be well received in the conservative community?

I have no doubt that after Bobby Schostak and Team Snyder snubbed you with their attempt to run Dave Camp, that you know where your base of support has been.

The phone is in the corner next to the plane ticket to DC.

    Dave Camp For Senate.

I want Dave Camp to enter the US Senate race.

And there is no question about it. The MIGOP critters want Dave Camp to enter the US Senate race. In fact they are even 'beastly' about it:

"Camp is now seriously considering jumping into the race at the behest of power-brokers back home, according to sources familiar with the congressman's thinking. A small but influential group of Michigan GOP leaders has cranked up the heat on Camp, making the case that he could appeal to independents statewide and win the seat. Camp, they say, has been increasingly receptive to their appeals.

"He's been getting a tremendous amount of encouragement from leaders and donors around the state," former Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis said. "If you hear enough of that, it becomes tough to ignore." Noting Camp's newfound openness to the idea, Anuzis added: "I'm really bullish.""

    By golly we agree.

Yes, I want Dave Camp to run for US Senate.

    But For different reasons.

High-Profile Opposition To The GoverNerd's Pain At The Pump

As I've mentioned more than once, most recently a little under three weeks ago, back when Saul Anuzis was defending his seat against Dave Agema, he cited a perfect example from his own tenure as state party chair of how the party can and should hold our elected officials accountable to the party's principles.  I find that example enlightening specifically because of it's similarity to the situation that Michigan Republicans find themselves in now.

I have, my entire adult life, desired to accomplish one thing above all others.  Beyond what normal men might find worth aspiring to, I have always wanted to win one when it really mattered.  To just once be the guy it all rides on when it's on the line . . . and deliver the goods.  To slay the dragon, save the world, and get the girl . . . film at eleven.  To, for one moment in time, have my "A game" firing on all cylinders . . . and be utterly unstoppable.

However, God, in his wisdom, has heretofore seen fit to withhold from me such success . . . until last weekend.

In his book, "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team," Patrick Lencioni writes:

"If you could get all the people in an organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, at any time."

. . . and holy cow, wouldn't we love to actually have a political party that could hand the Socialist-Democrats their jackasses on a plate with some reliability every election.  But there's some work we're going to have to do first in order to get there.

Due to the short amount of time between the county and state conventions, information packets will NOT be mailed to state convention delegates.  PLEASE DISTRIBUTE all necessary information (forms provided) to convention delegates at your County Convention.  We will email convention information following the county conventions.

Thus says the cover memo of the May 2012 Convention Packet e-mailed out from the Michigan Republican Party, back in March, to the County Chairs & Secretaries.  Of particular interest should be Enclosures 14, 15, and 16:

    • Call to the 2012 Congressional District Caucuses
    • Call to the 2012 Spring State Convention
    • Tentative State Convention Agenda

    Each is copied below.
