    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

This congressional election should be rather entertaining.

Saying new leadership is needed in Washington, D.C., Sen. Bert Johnson, D-Highland Park, officially got into the race for 13th Congressional District and will likely challenge veteran U.S. Rep. John Conyers.

Hmmm, a feeble old socialist that won't talk about that Papas deep injection well and whose wifey is locked up in the Federal pen, or...

Johnson served in the state House of Representatives from 2005-10 and was elected to the state Senate in 2010. He said he expects to raise up to $600,000 for the race.

One thing he'll have to face is a 1993 conviction of armed robbery, which he calls a "transgression" when he was 19 and working as a golf caddy at the Oakland Hills Country Club.

So, working in the burb's sticking guns in peoples faces is some silly "transgression".

    But wait, there's more!

If there's one thing that John Conyers, III has little tolerance for, it's with naggers like Charlie LeDuff, from FOX 2 News.

Detroit Neighborhood: John Conyers House is an Eyesore: MyFoxDETROIT.com

C'mon Charlie, why get all serious on little Johnny, III?  For cripes sake, daddy took his government Cadillac away and has no way to get gas for a lawn mower let alone make amends for his debts when he was learning to drive.

A Message To Our Legislators - Beware False Choices

    Monica Conyers' Recommended Jail Sentence

is 46-57 months. If the judge is to agree with this recommendation Ms. Conyers will serve within a stone's throw of the maximum allowed as a condition of her guilty plea.

I think it would be incomplete to think of her crime as being wrapped around the illegal collection of some $60,000 or $70,000 in various shake downs. It would be more fitting to define it as her one small part in a multi-generational larceny that took a once proud city and removed from it its viability and with it, its self esteem.

I'll let others decide if this is justice for Conyers, but the city of Detroit, if it is ever to receive justice, would need a lot more jail time to be served by thousands if not tens of thousands of corrupted public officials, businessmen, teachers, and other various thugs that absconded with the peoples' trust, money, and futures through much of the past five decades.

House Democrats pick vacation over economy, smoking ban

The good people organizing the big Earth Day celebration at Saginaw Valley State are going to be so disappointed.

Not only does a disproportionate amount of hot air continue to come pouring out of Lansing but now the Democrats in the House of Representatives are abandoning one of their cardinal issues, shelving plans to force small businesses to prohibit smoking on their own property.  And SVSU's greenie crowd aren't the only ones up in arms.

    According to the Detroit News:

Sen. Ray Basham, D-Taylor, a leading proponent of the smoking ban, said lawmakers can work on more than a couple issues at a time.

"I'm OK with multi-tasking," Basham said. "When 3,000 people are dying in Michigan every year from secondhand smoke and smoking-related diseases are costing us billions a year for health care, we should find time to deal with this."

    House Speaker Andy Dillon disagrees.

House Speaker Andy Dillon, D-Redford Township, said he has decided the House should zero in this spring on balancing the cash-strapped budget and creating jobs in the wounded economy.

"The smoking ban is an important issue, but jobs and the budget are more important right now," Dillon said. "I see us getting back to the smoking issue by summer."

Lansing has a weird complex where one minute they're not thinking things through enough and the next they're wearing grooves in the carpet with all of their back and forth.  They've been discussing a complete workplace smoking ban for as long as I've been in the game and Dillon has made it a point of emphasis in the past.

Practically speaking, if they want to activity X in location Y, they've got the legislation ready to go.   One reason they shelve it... even the Democrats, boasting an overwhelming partisan majority in the legislature, aren't on board with the concept.  The votes just plain aren't there.

And Mr. Speaker?  Lets stop blowing smoke at the press... you couldn't care less about jobs and the economy right now.  The only thing on your caucus's mind this week is the legislative spring break on which you sent them.  You're not focusing on one piece of legislation at the expense of the other.  You're focusing on your tans.

Detroit descends deeper into the dangerous and bizarre

On the upside, the Final Four is in Detroit this weekend.  Saturday at 6:07 PM they jump the ball in the first battle, between the Michigan State Spartans and the Connecticut Huskies.

And while the Green and White make their way to Ford Field,Jay Cutler won't be, which is also good news, because now I won't have to hate the Lions like I suddenly hate the Bears.  (Kyle Orton and a couple of mediocre draft picks?  Seriously?)

That's the good news, and folks from out-of-state who stumbled onto this website in advance of your trip to the big game should just skip ahead to the next story on the page.  Because to whatever extent the rest of Detroit remains a secret to the average non-Michigander, we'd probably all be better served to preserve that naiveté.

The rest of the picture isn't pretty and it just keeps getting creepier.  Worse, uglier, sure, between the record shattering unemployment, the stubborn refusal to vote for change and the mayoral candidates who sound like everyone else from the last fifty years there are a lot of adjectives we could use, but "creepy" fits this morning's news best.

The freep: Security level for Detroit City Council exceeds other cities. Is the MSM just noticing this NOW??? I mean - this isn't exactly current news to those of us in the Detroit metro area. Why report it now? I don't really know, other than the MSM might be doing this so that some time later they can say "look! We've criticized democrats too! We're not biased!" Since Monica Conyers has dug herself a hole (and, like our president, thinks she can keep digging to get herself out), she would be a lame duck target to go after. In any case, here's an excerpt from the story:

Why Detroit is in the Dumps, reason #11,832

    cross-posted at theblogprof.

I can tell you very simply why Detroit is in the dumps. The inmates have taken over the asylum. It happened some time ago, but the most incompetent people imaginable are in charge of the city. Case in point today - Monica Conyers. From the pages of the freep this morning:

Detroit City Council President Monica Conyers had to be restrained during a confrontation last week with Councilman Kwame Kenyatta in which she hurled insults at Kenyatta about his hearing aid, health and education.
Nice. If she were just an ordinary citizen, it would simply be par for the course. But she's the Council President. As a matter of fact, this is unfortunately only the most recent of a multitude of incidents involving Conyers.
