Mike Cox lays out the reasons for backing Arizona..
I love the line about a "healthy tension" between states and the federal govt... YES. The idea that he is using these issues to advance the campaign is understandable, but given the severe need for the measures in the first place it is a good thing.. altruistic or not. Fact is, if he did not pursue Asian Carp, The Health care debacle, or assert sovereignty on the states right issues of protecting our borders, he would be called to the carpet for not doing his job by some. We have been fortunate to have Mike Cox as our AG. I hope his replacement is as active in protecting the interest of Michiganders. (2 comments) Comments >> By JGillman, Section News
Mike Cox has Received the endorsement from Shooters Alliance for Firearm Rights.
I know we have talked about the NRA recently, and SAFR became part of the discussion. SAFR is definitely one of the smaller representatives of Gun Owners rights, but seems to represent the true nature of the 2nd Amendment better than some other gun groups. It was a win for the Cox campaign to see Mike Cox receive the SAFR endorsement, an important point made as the Shooters Alliance for Firearm Rights (SAFR) PAC, is one of the stronger pro-2nd Amendment leaders, with activists and voters across the state. AG Cox issued the following statement:
"As a Marine, prosecutor and Michigan's Attorney General I swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and I will continue to defend our gun rights as governor. I am honored to stand side-by-side with pro-2nd Amendment leaders, activists and voters at the Shooters Alliance for Firearm Rights in the fight to protect the right to keep and bear arms." Note that its NOT JUST about hunting... More... (6 comments, 583 words in story) Full Story By Wendy Day, Section News
Job Description and Qualifications: A governor is the chief executive of a state, similarly to how the president is the chief executive of the country. Specific duties for governors are defined by each state's constitution, but commonly, they sign bills into law, propose budgets, and see that state agencies are staffed and operating as directed by law. Also, a governor is the commander of his or her state's national guard.

Sometimes folks embellish a little when talking about accomplishments. Perhaps to "color" the experience they wish to share, or to keep interest of those who are falling asleep during the story of their "great mountain lion hunt" on Mackinac Island.
There are times and places appropriate for stretching of the truth.. Not LYING mind you.. but simply "seasoning". One of these should not be when seeking a position of trust. Little white lies, indefensible inaccuracies, half truths.. not so good when looking to be elected. It seems we will always see more of those aberrations from decency however. No matter which election, or political party that is involved, some people either conveniently forget their REAL accomplishments, or they hope the public will. Seriously, no matter the side you are on, the Republican Governor candidate's ads are getting good and more upbeat..
My personal favorite is the first one for Mike Cox. (what can I say?) It addresses the real issue in Michigan, a LOUSY environment to do business, (unless you are hooked by bureaucrats in a bizarre Rumplstiltskin scheme..) and is not the place that investors look to first any longer. The second ad also uses a fast moving theme, and shows Pete Hoekstra is working hard on his campaign. Ideas bus. It doesn't identify the problem as well as the first, but it points out the value of getting input from around the state. Mike Bouchard's "look" ad is pretty good too. It identifies the problem, and offers him up as a solution provider in the past, and identifies him as a "conservative" which resonates well right now. Rick Snyder talks of "re-inventing " Michigan government in his short spot, "Jobs." He apparently wants to look at Michigan as a business, and apply business solutions. All of the ads have one commonality. They are focused on the candidate as the solution provider. No cheap shots, no overblown complaining, and each worth looking at.

A big boost for the Mike Cox campaign came in with a nod from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce as reported in yesterday's Detroit News:
Republican Attorney General Mike Cox picked up some instant credibility in his bid for governor Tuesday when the Michigan Chamber of Commerce announced it will endorse him. And just a few days ago, Cox received the much welcomed support of Former Gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy, who said: "As a lifelong Republican activist and former State Party Chairman, I have witnessed Mike Cox fight for conservative values with the courage of his convictions" With Dick Devos adding:
"Mike Cox has demonstrated, consistently, the toughness required of a CEO leading a troubled organization through a turnaround," Though endorsements are no guarantee of forthcoming win, a lot can be said for the ability of these high profile organizations and individuals throwing their support to one candidate over another in a field populated by many good people. To increase transparency and accountability for Michigan politicians, The Center for Michigan today launched the Michigan Truth Squad, a non-partisan Web-based project that will seek to keep candidates and campaigns more honest and issue-focused in the ads they use to persuade voters during the 2010 election season.

Things are starting to happen in the primary cycle. There are some of you who have felt that the advertising done by the Cox campaign regarding the TARP was too tough, or perhaps distasteful. The results are in, and the ads, as well as a the plan advertised by Cox for Michigan's future seem to have moved public opinion in his favor.
The Mike Cox 2010 campaign today released the results of a new poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies showing Mike Cox leading the race for governor. According to Public Opinion Strategies pollster Neil Newhouse:
"After only two weeks of out-state advertising, Cox has essentially erased Pete Hoekstra's once commanding 13-point lead and reshaped this race," The poll of 400 likely GOP primary voters finds Mike Cox in first place with 21 percent of the vote, Pete Hoekstra tied in first at 21 percent, Rick Snyder at 18 percent, Mike Bouchard at 10 percent and Tom George at 2 percent. The poll was conducted May 25-27 with a margin of error of +/-4.9%. (650 words in story) Full Story
