Mike Cox has Received the endorsement from Shooters Alliance for Firearm Rights.

I know we have talked about the NRA recently, and SAFR became part of the discussion.  SAFR is definitely one of the smaller representatives of Gun Owners rights, but seems to represent the true nature of the 2nd Amendment better than some other gun groups.

It was a win for the Cox campaign to see Mike Cox receive the SAFR endorsement, an important point made as the Shooters Alliance for Firearm Rights (SAFR) PAC, is one of the stronger pro-2nd Amendment leaders, with activists and voters across the state.  AG Cox issued the following statement:

"As a Marine, prosecutor and Michigan's Attorney General I swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and I will continue to defend our gun rights as governor.  I am honored to stand side-by-side with pro-2nd Amendment leaders, activists and voters at the Shooters Alliance for Firearm Rights in the fight to protect the right to keep and bear arms."

Note that its NOT JUST about hunting...

SAFR-PAC is a coalition representing thousands of Michigan hunters and firearms owners and enthusiasts.  The group was formed by concerned pro-2nd Amendment activists dedicated to making the voices of firearm owners heard and committed to providing a unified voice for gun-rights activists in Michigan elections.

Brad Benzing SAFR PAC member and legislative liaison said:

"Mike Cox is 2nd Amendment supporters' best friend in Michigan. Cox talks the talk and walks the walk, standing up for gun owners time and again before the United States Supreme Court and fighting to expand CCW reciprocity across the nation.  Mike Cox is the best choice to effectively defend Michigan gun owners and our constitutional rights and SAFR-PAC is proud to endorse him in the race for governor."

Cox was the only gubernatorial candidate endorsed by SAFR-PAC.  Cox has also twice been endorsed by the National Rifle Association.  While some of Cox's opponents have opposed CCW reciprocity and supported the DC handgun ban, Cox has been a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

Cox as recently as last month, praised a ruling by the United States Supreme Court that agreed with an Amicus Brief filed by the Michigan Attorney General, upheld the Second Amendment to the Constitution and put an end to a local handgun ban in the city of Chicago.

Last year Cox's office joined Attorneys General from 37 other states in filing an amicus brief to McDonald v. Chicago, and one in support of the NRA in a related case, National Rifle Association v. City of Chicago. The briefs urged the Court to strike down the controversial weapons ban.

    Simply said:

"The Constitution protects the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms and government must not infringe on that right"

Cox has been a leader in the fight to protect the 2nd Amendment, previously signing two amicus briefs supporting the right of citizens to keep and bear arms in District of Columbia v. Heller. On June 26, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the District of Columbia's gun ordinance in that case. Cox's efforts to protect gun rights also resulted in more states recognizing Michigan-issued concealed weapons (CCW) permits. When Cox took office in 2003, only eight states recognized Michigan-issued CCW permits. Today, 36 states recognize Michigan issued CCW permits.

The SAFR endorsement further characterizes the trust held by 2nd amendment supporters for Cox's positions on gun rights.

    SAFR-PAC (none / 0) (#1)

Full Disclosure - I'm one member of the PAC. This was a consensus decision (as nearly all our decisions are) by our members at the last meeting.

This was a decision between good and best. In cases of good vs best, we'll endorse best. We grade surveys, statements, and records all separately. When the surveys and statements are close, the record makes the determination. Frankly, Mike Cox is the most pro-2nd amendment candidate for governor in my lifetime, primary or general. That's what made the difference. Reciprocity. The AG opinions reversing Frank Kelley. The Amicus brief. Only reciprocity was promised, but all of that was delivered. This is not an attack on other candidates. Mike Cox just has that good of a record.

We'll publicize our full grades when we finish are decisions. We have a lot of decisions still to make. Our 2010 primary decisions will be posted there when ready. Our past decisions can be viewed at http://www.safrpac.org

The unacceptable rating for the gubernatorial race goes to Virg Bernero, due to his vote against the Vear Transportation Bill. A lot of people do not know Virg's stance on this issue.

I will say this. SAFR-PAC is not Republican. SAFR-PAC is not Democrat. It is gun owners' rights. It has and will endorse people of both parties, and some here are going to probably really dislike one of our decisions that was made. I'll defend our decisions and will explain why, even when people endorsed are someone I personally won't support in an election.

I will promise that someone like a Joe Schwarz or Harry Reid will never get an endorsement from SAFR-PAC. Both were supported by the NRA.

"As a Marine, prosecutor and Michigan's Attorney General..."

Sorry, but I don't see any of these as a compelling reason to vote for someone.

GOA just endorsed Mike as well. (none / 0) (#5)
