    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    Hoekstra's Atrocious Campaign

I have no idea what GOP Gubernatorial candidate Pete Hoekstra is doing on the east side of the state, but his campaign on the west side has been, in my unsolicited opinion, atrocious.
From what I can tell, Hoekstra has effectively let the lies and unfair characterization of his record by fellow candidate Mike Cox and his allies' go unanswered.

The few television ads Hoekstra has run have been less than inspiring.  Talking at a camera in a seated position with nothing more than a brick wall backdrop hardly facilitates an effective ad.

With just over 2 weeks left before the August 3rd primary, there are reports Hoekstra's commanding lead has shriveled to a tie with Cox in polling.  Given Cox's dubious past and sleazy campaigning, this is quite an accomplishment for the Congressman from Holland, MI.

Get your act together, Pete.  You're about to lose a primary election that should've been a slam dunk.

A Message To Our Legislators - Beware False Choices

    Bad Fish

Is it too late? Has the Obama administration done to Michigan what it has done to the Gulf Coast?

In its inability to offer rule exclusions necessary for the building of berms needed to prevent the oil from reaching sensitive areas, the Obama administration doomed those sensitive areas to an ugly death state for many years to come.  And with its political connections and the Chicago interests willing to ignore the destruction of our natural resources here in the great lakes, the president has now earned yet another star for ignorance and incompetent leadership.  The Free press reports the carp are here:

"Several members of Congress were notified today of the find. The creature, found by commercial fishermen looking for carp as part of wider carp hunting missions, was 34.6 inches long and weighed just under 20 pounds.

This is the first time anyone has found an Asian carp, live or dead, beyond an electric barrier on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Lockport. The nearest carp to the barrier was a dead one found last December after a massive poisoning of the shipping canal. "

And it was a small one.

NFIB Joins Cox, and other states in lawsuit.. and more

Perhaps not exactly in the same suit, but in a way that keeps the disaster known as health care reform in the spotlight.  The National Federation of Independent Business is going to court:

The National Federation of Independent Business will join the argument that Americans cannot be required under the Constitution to obtain insurance coverage, the group's president, Dan Danner, said Friday.

"This law is the first time the federal government has required individuals to purchase something simply because they are alive," said Danner.

Regardless of whether that argument sways federal judges hearing the case, NFIB'S involvement ensures the point will be heard extensively during the fall political campaigns. With 350,000 members, the group boasts a far-reaching network of local activists. The lawsuit has a political overlay, since all but one of the state officials who filed the Florida case are Republicans. Some are running for higher office.

This of course is the main premise of AG Cox's lawsuit where he and another 20 states have sued the fed on the basis of this law's unconstitutional foundation.

Budget deficits, bipartisanship, charter schools and spite

Up until this point and minus any actual bill I've been unsure about House Speaker Andy Dillon's proposal- not plan- to load all state employees into one large insurance pool complete with modest co-pays and premiums in an effort to save, by his estimate, $900 million.

With a state budget $1.8 billion in the red and federal stimulus cash disappearing faster than Vanilla Ice (and leaving just as unpleasant a memory) I'm willing to listen to just about any kind of plan to shake up the status quo in Lansing.

When the Michigan Education Association lambasted Dillon I was that much more prone to agree with the man.  When Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Cox several days ago supportively praised Dillon's concept I became that much more encouraged by the possibility of bipartisan cooperation and real "change."

This morning, personally, I'm chalking up one more notch on the PRO side of the ledger... spite.  Pure, unadulterated, spite.

Booth Newspapers reported late yesterday that Governor Jennifer Granholm hates Dillon's idea because, apparently, it is a difficult political issue.  And if that doesn't make you want to find the nearest Granholm apologist and shake him firmly you're a better, more balanced person than me.

"The concern that I have is that this plan is not something that would save money in the budget year we are negotiating or the budget year afterward," Granholm said. "The timing of this is challenging."

Um, hello?  McFly?  McFlyyyy?  Anybody home McFly?  A $1.8 billion CHRONIC budget deficit, a nation's worst 15.2 percent unemployment rate and already a half-million one-time-residents exported to other states... those issues are challenging.  "Timing" has got freaking nothing on the economy the Governor, her number two John Cherry and Dillon himself have done their best over the last half-decade to permanently cripple.

The "timing is challenging?"  Are you kidding me?  Madame Governor... look around this state!  You're worried that the timing is challenging?  The timing is challenging.  Lamest excuses in the history of lame excuses.  Add that one to the lame excuse hall of fame right alongside "the dog ate my homework" and "I have to wash my hair."
