Pure torture. And no, its not the Romney/Obama debate of which I speak.
Last night was a busy one in the Grand Traverse area. Along with anticipation for the presidential debate scheduled to start at 9pm, there was a popular hearing on a $25 septic tank assessment scheduled for 6pm, and a Benishek/McDowell debate scheduled for 7pm at the local library. The assessment hearing had upwards of 600 people show up unexpectedly, (out of those 25,000 septic tank owners) resulting in cancellation of the hearing, and subsequent meetings today and tomorrow. (someday I may relate that tale) The Benishek/McDowall event was standing room only. Dan Benishek gets it. There is no question, DR. Dan understands the mechanics of how jobs are created better than his opponent. He understands as well as anyone why the 'Affordable Healthcare Act' is the ruin of good medicine. However, it wasn't until the second to last question of the debate that he was clearly understood. Debating skills were not at all present at this affair. Benishek's "I am not a politician", being the theme of his campaign, and partially the theme of last nights event? No kidding. More below the fold. After the intensity, its hard to pick up and simply write.
Catching up on other important aspects of life means taking a break by some from the posts one might expect after such a weekend. A busy one to be sure and one that had an interesting result with regard to the direction of the state party. The convention went well. The Michigan GOP convention in Detroit actually was a productive affair, that offered a cautionary tone for those who do not understand the dynamics of the tea party, conservatives, or even how those 'Paul' types operate. The Republican party is cleaning itself up, and the active new blood is a big part of it. Hopefully, it is not short lived, and some more patience is seen on both sides. We need to win races in November, and there are legitimate concerns from old guard and new alike. There is a bigger story to tell, but for now, and at least until I get some serious rest, I'll limit the commentary to the 1st district component.

I have marveled over the last few years at how often during Republican events and affairs, I would run across a certain Derek Bailey.
Who is Derek Bailey, you ask? He is the current tribal chair of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians. Purveyors of environmental activism in the region, supporters of Democrat causes everywhere, and proprietors of the Traverse Bay Resort and Casinos. His ability to move in an 'nonpartisan' manner through all manner of fundraisers for local politicians will undoubtedly reap untold benefits in his new venture. Mr Bailey is running for congress in the first congressional district as a Democrat.
Truly he is a Democrat, touting the napehair raising 99 percent hogwash: "And what I learned -- and what I believe today -- is that now more than ever, we must stand up for equity for America's worker, the 99 percent, not wealth for the top one percent of corporate CEOs."And reminding us that our public education system is riddled with the fomenters of such madness. Mr Bailey faces a challenger August 7, 2nd timer Gary McDowell who lost to Dan Benishek easily in 2010. McDowell will not have the help he received from the Democrats this time around however, and Bailey, while presenting a mild version of liberalism on his campaign site, carries another agenda entirely. 21 of them in fact. ~ Below the fold. ~ (5 comments, 966 words in story) Full Story By JGillman, Section News
Grand Traverse County Commission Chair Larry Inman is likely to take on Dan Benishek for the 1st Congressional District of Michigan.
Citing the debt ceiling increase and Benishek's lack of community outreach during his first term, Inman says he and others are "concerned Benishek cannot hold the seat" against the Democrat backed McDowell in November 2012. Inman states he is pro life and is a fiscal conservative on the Vic McCarty radio program today. Inman formerly a banker with Huntington has been on the Grand Traverse County board for 20 years this year. A recent change in the county districts reduced the number of districts from 9 to 7 in the county, resulting in potential contests between sitting commissioners. Jason Gillman, and Larry Inman would have to face off in the August for the newly formed 6th district encompassing Acme Whitewater, and Parts of East Bay Townships. The final decision by Inman is expected some time mid month. (3 comments) Comments >> By JGillman, Section News
A quick update.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. I Pretty much wanted to remind readers that there are advertising possibilities on RightMichigan.com that can work for you. No one is trying to get rich, but in the spirit of keeping the lights on, figured I would give a shout out to those who might be interested in placing a PAID spot on Michigan's top conservative, and Politically oriented Website. At this point, one could say the advertising sales force has been on vacation. For a while. Bermuda triangle area I believe. The numbers by the way, keep climbing. I would like to thank the contributors who have really stepped up the game lately and moved us further to the top. It helps as we roll into the new campaign cycle. And it would be prudent for those who wish to get a message out to conservatives around the state, and decision makers in Lansing to consider taking out an ad. We might even talk nice about you. Nah, we're always fair about who gets the wrath. Paid ads notwithstanding, everyone has an opinion. And of course only ours matter, so be good. Of course if it turns into a Huffington Post affair, and the owner sells out to the AOLs and Time-Warners of the world for UBER Millions, we will he'll throw all of those who have contributed a great party. Might even consider pizza. ..catered in from Buddy's (hmm Do they still exist?) Anyhow, back to work! By The Way, thanks to C-1st for his report. Michigan's new carve up is not too bad IMO. Condolences to the CD1 rep though. The travel time just increased a bit more. The square miles are insane. New Rule: Congressional Critters should travel by VOLT only. Looking a real challenge huh? Talk to you in a bit. (1 comment) Comments >> By JGillman, Section News
We have reported on the mailers sent out and the Michigan Democrat Party taking advantage of the independent candidate Glenn Wilson's position as spoiler in the MI CD1 race. In a somewhat interesting twist.. Independent spoiler candidate Glenn Wilson thanks the Democrats for spending PAC money on his behalf. The Wilson Campaign released this:
"The Glenn Wilson campaign would like to thank the Michigan Democratic Party for sending out the mailer regarding Wilson's stance on irresponsible government Spending." Some things just write themselves.. From the same campaign that has elements giving grief to Dr. Dan Benishek for accepting Republican money (he IS the Republican candidate.. go figure) we find the Wilson campaign eagerly lapping up the spilled milk of the Michigan Donkeys in a last minute attempt to remain relevant. The Democrat attempt to split the vote's cost? Estimated to be about $30,000.00 according to the Wilson Camp. Consider it a gift. But the Irony isn't lost on this writer.. Adopted son of Ronald Reagan, and national radio talk show host, Mike Reagan, made a video endorsing Dan Benishek for Congress.
This is on top of endorsements from Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, and Erick Erickson. By JGillman, Section News
I really hate to have to go here..
As many of you might have noticed I have not really made a mention of Glenn Wilson when covering Benishek, McDowell, and the fight to take the CD1 seat back from the lefties. My 'omission' Stemming from the realization that any more attention to the man who might siphon votes from Dan Benishek, might fuel Wilson's efforts, and guarantee the end that still might happen; a McDowell win. Funny, how it's something that I may well have railed about in years past watching debates that did not include 3rd party candidates. What is not funny, is the reality that Glenn Wilson is not Stupid. Nor are many of his followers. Yet they continue onward in a path that leads them to more of what they might claim to oppose. Any gains by team Wilson mean losses for Benishek. They speak to the same issues, and let there be no doubt McDowell, and the lying Michigan Democrats will take advantage of that. A Donkey could well hold the CD1 seat because of Wilson. But speaking to the same folks, and being the same.. have very different meanings.
