Another republican tax hike in the works?

Another republican tax hike in the works?

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. - Albert Einstein.

They just don't get it, do they?

Whose pocket are they looking at picking this time and why?

    {Details below the fold}

After seeing a substantial segment of its population make for the `burbs toot sweet, the City of Detroit realized that it has a problem.

It's not how do they pare down local government to better serve a dwindling population. Don't you realize that city government's sole purpose is as a jobs provider? Just shut up and give us your money!

No, the problem began when Detroit and a number of other Michigan cities decided to start shaking down the citizenry back in '62 (and non-residents around the same time) by directly imposing an income tax on their earnings, partially thanks to P.A. 284 of 1964. Detroit has always been looking for new and innovative ways to increase revenue...including making sweetheart deals in Lansing to increase their cut over the years.

Well, the times, they are a-changin.

Without the population to fulfill the criteria specifically written in the Act to apply only to the City of Detroit, Detroit is now looking at losing a substantial sum of revenue.

    Shudder!

What to do? What to do?

Never fear! Here comes the cavalry.

Their "solution": Rewrite the law to allow for a lower population threshold for city income taxes.

    Great plan.

Just for fun, take a wild guess as to which city all of this bill's sponsors hail from?

    I'll wait.

Scroll down to find out the surprising answer.

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    If you answered: Detroit.

Bingo! Give brainiac the fluffy doll.

Now, there are a number of problems with this bill, among which:

    - The City of Detroit is still allowed to impose a graduated income tax. Something that Article 9, Section 7 of the Michigan Constitution specifically prohibits.

Art IX § 7 Income tax.

Sec. 7. No income tax graduated as to rate or base shall be imposed by the state or any of
    its subdivisions.

    - You are only delaying the inevitable.

Much like the current argument in Washington about raising the debt ceiling, giving Detroit more money is like giving crack to an addict and then scratching your head asking why they're still a druggie after all this time.

    And finally,

    - Non-residents are charged a tax.

Do the words "No taxation without representation" ring a bell? I vaguely remember hearing something about that in a history class once?

This last point personally burns me up because of the fact a number of years back thanks to an office screw-up, I was mistakenly assigned to one of our locations in Detroit . I was assured by my dispatchers that they would take care of the situation and put me back where I was originally dispatched out of when I hired in. It took them two months to finally fix the problem, but it took HR only two days to track me down with their papers for me to sign for Detroit withholding tax. The fact that I personally requested a terminal outside of Detroit for this very reason and that it was an office screw-up didn't matter. King Coleman wanted his money.

I politely told them at that time what I thought of their mayor, their tax and their forms along with what they could do with all three.

Needless to say I didn't make any new friends that day (they were unabashed Detroit-boosters and residents), but in the end they didn't touch my paycheck.

A city literally lying in ruins all around me, basic city services are nowhere to be seen, I have absolutely no say in the day-to-day goings on and I was expected to unquestionably pay for that?!?

NO ONE should ever have to go through a similar situation as that.

Contact your elected officials and tell them to vote "NO" on H.B. 4623 today.

...I suppose if I have to get one the phone and tell my newly elected in Lansing to vote no on such things like H.B. 4623, they prolly shouldn't be in Lansing in the first place, and if proven dimwitted enough to actually follow through with a yes vote for any tax/spending increase, which mine did, I'll be voting him out next election anyway.

Nothing in Lansing that is referred to as a Republican would surprise me with how they arrogantly voted their tax hike shift through while gifting two sanctuary cities $900 Million to illegal aliens.  Disgusting.  But, as Mr. Hohman accurately wrote of Republican leadership in Lansing "This is was a game of margins, not one of principles," and within their deal cutting ways of nailing geezers Pensions, screwing with Property Taxes and freezing the Granholm/Dillon Income Tax Rate rollback, that is precisely why I refer to myself as a Conservative in place of what used to be a Republican.

It is interesting to note that muslimomma Tlaib hasn't yet met a tax that she doesn't like.  But then again, those that know muslimomma Tlaib and sharia, they are already aware that it isn't that far of an offshoot of Socialism to begin with.

With this interloping dhimmi tool from Sanctuary City Ann Arbor wanting to dumbo drop more muslimomma Tlaib's in the state for quota population figures, it would not surprise me one iota to find him behind the scenes with H.B. 4623 for Sanctuary City Detroit.  So ya, it will be the bootlicker class RINO that will enable the expanse of the Socialist Utopia inch in Detroit giving way to the mile of global citizenship sought to be accomplished by the commies working hand in hand with sharia as the muscleman.

"As Salaam Aleikum" at the taxpayer sponsored CAIR rally in Lansing?  You betchya!

Basically, Michigan got the GoverNerd Milquetoast 2.0 that they deservedly elected.

The MI-GOP is saddled with their Party fence jumping 2010 Primary Nerd as is the weakling rollover Majority leadership in the House and Senate.

Find that Stabenow challenger yet, Mr. Schostak?  Good luck with that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the GOP Leadership at the state and national level would best serve themselves with purging their pale pastel Democrat-light favored candidates 'cause folk like Ron and I are tired of their lame Party BS and are or have already cut off the money flow to them.

    And "republican principles" ... (none / 0) (#7)
by KG One on Wed Jun 01, 2011 at 03:17:31 PM EST
    ...apply here how?

"I BELIEVE in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability."

Just don't expect to vote in Detroit just because we're continuing to make you pay taxes there.

"I BELIEVE free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity."

Which is why we allowed this theft to continue.

"I BELIEVE government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn."

Yet, you allow the City of Detroit to take something that doesn't belong to them from those who live outside of the city?

"I BELIEVE the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations, and that the best government is that which governs least."

And you can say that with a straight face about Detroit? Man, I need to take you with me to poker night!

"I BELIEVE the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people."

No taxation without representation is obviously an anachronism in the GOP now.

FYI, the bill pass the Michigan House this afternoon 56-53, with a number of republicans throwing their support behind this tax.

Well, not really. How else could it have come up for a vote.

It's now on it's way to the Michigan Senate.

I'll pass along more info when it becomes available.

...this calls for the 3rd new word for 2011.  We've already had the first word, Bifarceisan, and JoeBlog came up with GoverNerd.  So...

    Bolgergiest

    bol-ger-giest |ˈbōlgərˌgīst|
    noun
an apparition Republican or wraith principled Republican Speaker of Michigan's House supposedly accountable for fiscal responsibility such as proper roll of government and promoting individuals ability to keep more of the money they earn.

ORIGIN indistinguishable Democrat National Party: from RINO Bolgergeist, from bolger 'leadership' + Geist 'ghost.'

    Simply amazing.

Ari Adler, a spokesman for Speaker Jase Bolger, R-Mashall, said House GOP leadership supported the bills because the near term consequences from the lost revenue would be too severe for the economically troubled city.

Yep, same tired old bullsh!t cop-out excuse that's been played since the '67 riots.

"We recognize that Michigan's future and Detroit's future are tied together," Adler said, "But over the long term we have to look at the expense side as well."

Sure sounds like RINOs propping up a taxpayer responsible boondoggle gummint bridge to me.

"Detroit lost a lot of its population. What has been done to rein in the size of government?"

Quick answer is not a gottdamned thing other than the appearance of reining in so not to be labeled raaaaaay-ceeeeeest.

Same reason why this state will still be suckling hind teat without Right-to-Work.

    Thanks cowardly Majority Lansing asshats.
