Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

    Choices.

    Governor Bernero or Governor Snyder?

Neither choice sounds very appealing, does it?

    {Continued below the fold.}

Well, the dust has finally settled, and the prospects are narrowing.

In November, will Cat-5 Hurricane Jenny's replacement be Gov. Bernero?

Hot-headed, career politician from Lansing <strike>Pontiac</strike>. Supporter of "adequate" government funding here in Michigan (I wonder where that money will come from). Proponent of Obamacare.

    Or, Gov. Snyder?

Wishy-washy, debate avoiding, questionnaire squelching, self-proclaimed "nerd" (nerd king) who will use his business acumen gleaned from running Gateway into the ground and his philanthropic endeavors around A^2 to "fix" Michigan.

Even with the smiling faces and numerous glad-handing photo-ops, some people have left today's "unity" lunch in Lansing, still unable to remove the taste of bile from their mouths.

"These are our only choices," you may ask yourself?

    Are they?

As I have noted in earlier posts, I have been unimpressed with what was available on the GOP side this year.

Mainly this was due to too much baggage associated with a particular candidate, not having any "fire" to inspire people, or just another tired re-tread version of GWB/McCain pushed by party leadership who is unable to keep their word.

I'm not big on the mind-set of "holding my nose when I vote" simply because of a party label. If you are not going to stand for what you believe in, then why are you wasting everyone's time by labeling yourself differently than you opponent? Walk over to them, bow down/group hug/kiss some body part/whatever floats your boat, sing kumbayah and think happy, happy thought to yourselves. I want a candidate who actually stands for something.

I haven't been pushing very much earlier due to the competitiveness of the race drowning out anything that I would have to say on the matter. But now that the primaries are over, it's time for that to change.

There will probably be a lot of friction between the various groups in the coming days, which is pretty much expected. But after the next several days, what will you do?

Are you going to "hold your nose" and vote for Rick Snyder, just because he has a "-r" after his name on the ballot? Are you going to not vote for Bernero?

I don't know about you, but NEITHER one of those choices appeals to me.

I want to see an actual limited-government, Conservative candidate for the Office of Governor on the ballot.

If this is something that you also want to see, and not wait until 2014, I highly recommend that you take at look at this year's US Taxpayer's Party of Michigan gubernatorial candidate: Stacey Mathia.

    Stacey Mathia for Governor Homepage.

From what I have seen and read on her stand on the issues, she is not someone who will sell her principles and slap an "-r" after her name to make it easier to get onto the ballot, nor is she a Neo-Obama Zombie.

The choices are fairly clear: Vote for someone who will stand for something, or take your chances with who the MSM feels would be a better candidate?

I would rather see someone who stands for the same principles as I do.

I don't like being called a taxpayer. I would insist that the phrase be changed to 'those who have paid taxed', will pay taxes' or something along these lines. Agreeing to call oneself a taxpayer seems like agreeing to...more of the same...regardless of the fine platform.

Also, there is the centrist issue where one must reach a goal by increments rather than trying to bite the whole off at once.

    I'm interested. Keep em comin!

The Republican Party was founded in Michigan in 1854. Let Michigan be the place where that washed up party filled with gutless, spineless has beens dies. Let this be the birth place for a new party. Based in Conservative values and a desire to set things right. The state GOP never listens to anything, the National GOP doesn't listen to anything so why praytel should I bother supporting a bunch of losers that are content to go along to get along. I am TIRED of COMPRIMISE. No more. It is time for a party to be organized with people that have the guts to fight for Michigan, for America, for our children and for our GOD. The time is now.
The state and national parties have been warned for years about the dangers of the open primary system. But they won't listen. So we end up with a McCain or a Synder. I am tired of elites and self proclaimed aristocrats thinking that we are content to be taken for granted and exploited for their welfare. The time is now. We don't have many chances left. And we are burnin' daylight.

Unless Rick Snyder is found in bed with a dead woman or a live boy between now and November, this Pro-Life conservative will be casting his vote for Snyder in the general election. I've met Virg Bernero. I've heard Virg Bernero. You don't want Virg Bernero to be Michigan's next Governor.

We are in a serious pickle here for 2010.  My first thought, on considering the choices for governor, is to say a plague on both the major parties, I'm voting Libertarian.  I still may, but I fear this could just be a tantrum, irresponsibly taking my toys and going home.  While I support libertarian values, is a vote against Snyder in November actually a vote FOR Bernero? An anti-life extremist, who views Obama as too moderate, who's adored by the UAW and every public service union?  By keeping my vote away from Snyder, would I just be helping elect Michigan's own Pol Pot?

by Bruce on Thu Aug 05, 2010 at 09:52:34 AM EST
What does that mean for November?  The Democratic Party is faced with trying to elect a left-wing governor while the conservative Republicans are caught between the choice of a centrist Republican [who will be called a RINO] or looking for a third choice... perhaps Libertarian.  If Republicans do not vote for Synder, then Bernero will win and the small minority of staunch left-wing voters will snatch an improbable victory from the jaws of defeat.

    It's all game theory.

    http://hallofrecord.blogspot.com/2010/08/michigan-primary-election-results-you.html

Without a political track record, it is difficult to assess Rick Snyder's ability to bring economic sense to Michigan's chaos... but his proposals seem reasonable when compared with Bernero's wildly left-wing approaches.

Conservatives would do well to concentrate on the legislature where budgets and laws can be changed.  Synder may not be the perfect package, but your choice is to allow corruption to rule.

Stacey Mathis is nice enough... I met her at a tea party gathering in Westland... however, I don't believe her candidacy is viable.

Being frustrated is not a reason to be stupid.

That's who we can emulate. He knew he was right ..but he wanted to win. He knew that the way to win was to go door to door and drink tea, develop relationships, building..always building.

So, the lesson here is to...drink tea! Seriously, we should do things precept by precept; here a little, there a little.

Snyder wins, does nothing to fix the budget, size of government, tax structure, unions, etc. etc. Based on his track record, this is a likely scenario. I saw a good point posted on here before that said he'll hit a brick wall if he tries to govern as a CEO...it just doesn't work in politics.

So, 2014 rolls around and Michigan's economy is worse off than it is now. Dems would then have the opportunity to say "Look at where the big business GOP governer has gotten you!" and win in a landslide.

They way I see it, if Snyder wins we're guaranteed a Democrat in 2014.

by William Milligan on Thu Aug 05, 2010 at 12:08:00 PM EST
I think if conservatives front a third candidate (either formally or informally) in protest of Snyder, you will pretty much guarantee a Virg victory. The only shot you have is to all get behind Snyder. Any fissures in the GOP will doom Snyder and thus the GOP.

    A third-party candidate--even a libertarian already on the ballot--doesn't have a chance. Zero.

You've got to think about the bigger picture and put aside differences (imo).

    Just my observations, anyway.

    Good points... (none / 0) (#27)
by William Milligan on Thu Aug 05, 2010 at 02:53:36 PM EST
Good points...but just like the dem party, there is a healthy spectrum in the Republican party. I consider myself a centrist democrat...Snyder appeals to me enough that I'll give him a fair hearing. And I think that safely speaks for a lot of moderate dems and independents.

I do have friends who are moderate republicans and who have felt disenfranchised by the vocal far-right of the party. I know many republicans who also share the view that the GOP should be (and can be) more diverse.

I'm old enough to have voted for Reagan. Twice.
Yes, I've moved to the left more since that time...but I would also argue that Reagan (like Snyder) captured a lot of moderate dem voters and independents. In other words, Reagan wasn't as far to the right as he's now being painted today. I remember him being skewered on the right for litany of things (attending an FDR dinner...raising taxes...saving medicare). Ronnie crossed the aisle when he had to and worked with everyone and anyone. He was pragmatic that way.

I appreciate personal integrity and people sticking to their guns...but the GOP has to figure out a way to widen their tent in the long run. Perhaps in doing so they alienate some good people like yourself who will look elsewhere...but the writing's on the wall.

    The GOP Elite (none / 0) (#30)
by MichWolverine on Thu Aug 05, 2010 at 03:12:29 PM EST
The GOP elite can fold up their tent and leave.  We're all done with so-called leadership that will sell out their values for their own selfish interests.  Conservative voters do not need 'party leadership' because we are informed and make our own decisions, and then we vote accordingly.

In order for someone to lead, people need to be willing to follow.  Well, we're all done following the wishy-washy, spineless whimps who try to hold themselves up as our leaders.

On Tuesday, the Conservative voters in Michigan spoke loud and clear.  They rejected the 'old guard' hand-picked elite and went in the opposite direction.

My only gripe with Snyder?  He needs to stop touting himself as a 'nerd' and embrace the fact that he is a very successful businessman with a wealth of experience and knowledge.  Successful people need to stop apologizing for being smart, driven, lucky or hard-working.  Those are the qualities that formed this nation, and they are to be hailed, not hidden!

Choices (long term point of view) (none / 0) (#41)
by Pogo on Fri Aug 06, 2010 at 07:01:28 PM EST
Something that struck me right off the bat, is that this is another Scozzafava. Not that party hierarchy hand picked the candidate this time (as the best popularity contest winner, or whatever), but they set up the rules and system for choosing a party's candidate that allowed this result. I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere- what am I missing?

Personally, I've made up my mind that you have to pick SOME time and place to take a stand on principle, and if not now, I don't know when it would be. The Republican party has to have a lesson it will sit up and notice- otherwise they will never have any reason to make any changes. I'll be voting Libertarian for gov. in November. Yes, I know it comes at a cost - (if enough people feel the same way) it will bring another Granholmian four years with a flaming red socialist as governor of Michigan. The time and place is right, though- the next few years will see collapsing property and income taxes, and red ink that will cripple any proposals for new entitlements and social programs. Most likely, what's there now will even have to be cut back. A Bernero administration will push the legislature as hard as it can to raise taxes of all kinds, but if there is at least one house to say NO, the public will see a socialist governor having to sacrifice his party's own sacred cows. Michigan will be the most visible national symbol of a union run hellhole; if that doesn't open the eyes of the public, and bring some long term real change, I don't know what would. Who knows, right-to-work, and other once unattainable freedoms might be in store in the next decade.

    GOP Primary Stolen? (none / 0) (#43)
by Mr Galt on Sun Aug 08, 2010 at 05:56:52 PM EST
Good article.  After the Aug. 3rd primary results, I had made a decision to vote for neither Bernero or Snyder.  But having looked at the Taxpayer Party Candidate, Mathia appears to be an acceptable alternative.

Funny thing about Snyder, he was only "CEO" of Gateway for a few months during 2006 (Interim CEO, actually) and during his tenure on the Board of Directors Gateway's share price plummeted from the mid-80's per share, to less than $2.  Not what I would call, something to brag about.

As far as being a "tough nerd", Snyder is no nerd - he is an f-ing lawyer for God's sake.  My take on the primary, is that by appealing to liberal organizations and Democrats, Snyder was able to exploit the split GOP ticket to his advantage.

The Demonrats know they have an uphill battle to gain the Governor's seat, so they conspired (IMHO) to subvert the election using Snyder as bait.  We are now faced with a Soviet-style "choice" between two candidates who aren't all that different from one another.

Cox, Bouchard, and Hoekstra may have all had their deficiencies, but they are all decidedly more conservative than Snyder.

Bernero of course, is a complete non-starter.  He's nothing more than a male, angry version of Granholm (I received literally dozens of emails from the MEA pimping Bernero if that tells you anything).

My wife and I have been "hanging on" here in the Michigan, with the expectation that we might wind-up with someone halfway decent in Lansing come November.  With this development however, I'm seriously considering taking my tech-skills to a much more business and taxpayer friendly State.

I'm BEYOND disgusted with Michigan, and her voters.
