    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

Regulars know I am pushing for Freedom to work (right to work) in Michigan.  Part of the argument going forward in this state will be to present the data for all to see. For this installment, we look at the top Job creating states versus the bottom.

Right to Work states lead the nation in creating new jobs (1999-2009)

    1. Texas              +866,000
    2. Florida             +291,600
    3. Arizona            +194,800
    4. Virginia            +138,400
    5. Nevada            +124,500

Michigan and other forced unionism states lead the nation in losing jobs (1999-2009)

    1. California        -170,400
    2. Indiana           -225,300
    3. Illinois            -332,700
    4. Ohio              -508,200
    50. Michigan       -687,600

    A Big Freaking Deal

One of the biggest ethical problems I have with unions, is that the ability to contract for one's own self is not included.  While professing insipid profundities like "protecting the little guy" big labor in turn, refuses to allow the little guy who might have more to offer, a chance to capitalize on it.  This, in my view hardly protects anyone's ability to seek and find suitable employment based on his or her skills.  It cheapens the employment and takes away from the value of the position.

Michigan's Capitol Confidential is now reporting that State Senator John Proos is going to push for Right-to-work zones in Michigan.

Proos, R-St. Joseph, introduced legislation Wednesday that would allow counties and municipalities in Michigan to create right-to-work zones. It is Senate Bill 120. Proos says the bill is on his agenda because the issue is "too important" to wait for Snyder to lead the way. In addition to its sponsor, the bill has eight Republican co-sponsors in the Senate -- already nine of the 19 votes needed to pass the bill in that chamber, assuming that Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Calley would cast a tie-breaking vote.

Snyder as mentioned in the article has given prior indication that he would sign this type of legislation, even though it is not on his agenda.

For my purposes however, this has other ramifications.  If this was to become law, I would push to have Grand Traverse County become the first Right to work zone in the state.  Both for attention, and also for other reasons (there are SOME who are unionized here who would appreciate if they were not forced to be)that contribute to efficiency.

I DO hope this goes forward fruitfully.  Here's to happy unencumbered employees!

A Message To Our Legislators - Beware False Choices

    Prove it.

    The time is at hand.

When those in the newly elected Michigan Senate decide who will be the leader, it must be someone who is willing to go beyond the status quo.  Make no mistake of thinking the 'leadership' of the Republican party had this election in the bag without the support of the free market, liberty loving tea party types who did a great deal of the WORK to change Michigan and the rest of the nation.

Ignore our efforts at your peril.

An article in today's Capitol Confidential has a quote by prospect for Senate Majority leader, Randy Richardville:

"I have moved further to the right than I used to be"

    Glad to know.

What does that mean Randy?  And what about your follow up?

"I don't see unions as being evil. If you want to work in Michigan, I'm probably going to support you. Sometimes working with unions helps get them back to work. ... Some people on the far right want to throw anyone out because they work for a union organization. That's not me."

With all due respect. "Probably" won't cut it.

    This is ONE chance.

We changed the State House last night.  We have a super majority in the Senate.  With this combination, COURAGEOUS measures can be done.

I realize Snyder has not made it HIS agenda priority, but to really affect how business is done in the state of Michigan, and whether-or-not it is, we need to start pushing back on the stranglehold big labor has had here.  Labor, which has been chasing out our manufacturing sector, and managing to embed itself like ticks in the skin of our state government has to find a natural predator NOW, or it might be impossible the next go round.  Labor is costing us jobs because it is so inflexible.

More jobs is a good thing right?

There is a win win for Michigan.  If I am not mistaken, Snyder has indicated he would likely sign it if it came before him. IT.. being right to work legislation that needs to be on the table.

    And right away.

Ask those prospective leaders in both the House and Senate: "Do you support Right To work legislation, and will you send it to the governor to sign?"

There is no excuse NOT to have it there.

Right to work - Right to contract - Right to control?

Unemployment is high.  Manufacturing is moving out of state, and sometimes taking a "moving" opportunity" moving out of country.. Permanently.

While the meat heads in the labor unions are figuring out new ways to persuade our leaders to LIMIT the ability of Michigan business to operate, the scholars in many other countries are figuring out what made America so great for so many years.  And while our leaders in Michigan insert their own brand of controls on Michigan residents and business owners, it offers an opportunity for those who create jobs to "supersize" their crap sandwich from the drive-through window of Lansing's growing bureaucracy.

Laws that tell you what you pay..  Laws that tell you whom you can hire..  Laws that tell you what legal substances can be used in the business you "own." Laws that govern whether you dismiss someone appropriately, the hours they work, and soon whether you should be providing insurance for them.  Add to this, the business owner has become the tax collector.

Is this truly Liberty?  The top four definitions would say not:

    lib·er·ty
    Showing Spelled[lib-er-tee]
    -noun, plural -ties.

    1. freedom from arbitrary or despotic government or control.
    2. freedom from external or foreign rule; independence.
    3. freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, etc., according to choice.
    4. freedom from captivity, confinement, or physical restraint: The prisoner soon regained his liberty.

Even as "right-to-work" legislation is being discussed, there is still absent a consideration of what it is that allows the government to set such controls on our ability to contract for ourselves in the first place.

    Newt on the Island

No one was more disappointed than I, upon seeing Newt Gingrich sitting on the sofa professing some reality to the global warming scam in the "WE" ads.  From that point I have had lukewarm feelings about his ability to produce common sense solutions, and have been very doubtful about his conservative cred.

However, in his Mackinac Island speech, he has a message worth listening to.

I'll be touching on the following approximate times if I get a few minutes later:

    • 18:00
    • 29:45
    • 34:00
    • 42:30

    In the meanwhile...

Today's Business Done Right article is a little behind..  Aside from being quite large, (not me.. the article..) I am hoping to receive some more correspondence before I put it to press.

It may be a long day.. So while we wait..

We should be reminded WHY this state is in the pickle it is in.  Cronyism, on the part of our legislative leadership, particularly with an emphasis on the rewarding of groups which deliver a particular constituency to the polls when needed, is ongoing.  The MEDC recently giving Millions of your dollars to SEIU to "locate" here, and now it seems some misguided Republicans in the state senate ready to reward them even more.
