The only debate between Michigan Gubernatorial contenders Rick Snyder and Virg Bernero was tonight.
As soon as the debate is available for after event viewing, I would encourage you to find and view it. One thing that stood out to me is how "blinky" Virg Bernero is. (In particular, a 'tic' in his right eye) It made me do a quick search for things that it may represent. I found this:
How To Tell If Someone Is Lying
Unfortunately, some of the symptoms require more time, and more 'rope' than what a debate format can offer..
"Too Much of Eye Blinking: Lying has a stressful effect on the liar's body. If a person is lying, his eyes are strained resulting in too much of eye blinking." Folks, as you know, I have my misgivings, but I will tell you, the times I have met Rick Snyder in person, he looked me in the eye and didn't blink or look away. I had his full attention for as long as I wanted to talk. This is only ONE thing to pull away from the debate, and I do encourage you to look. The strobe must have been terrible for ol Virg. More? From The Rob Steele Campaign:
A debate is scheduled for October 20. The scheduled debate will take place at the Monroe Community College's La-Z-Boy Center. It will be run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. The doors open at 5:45pm.
Says DR Steele:
Indeed.. I wonder if Mr Dingell will bother reading any notes before participation in this.. The Rob Steele for Congress campaign has accepted debate requests from the Southern Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Chamber of Commerce. Outside of public posturing, there has been no official response of acceptance or refusal from the Dingell for Congress campaign. Since the United States House of Representatives has adjourned for the remainder of the campaign there is no longer an excuse for the Dingell campaign to refuse these other debate requests. I have been a supporter of the Michigan Fair Tax for some time. Personally, I think it may need a tweak to consider the difficulty of service tax collection, but is the type of structure we need to look at.
Roger Buchholtz of the MIFairtax provided the following report, and AFP has graciously provided the forum and video of our three best candidates: Mike Bouchard, Mike Cox and Pete Hoekstra debated before a crowd of over 1,500 people that attended an Americans For Prosperity (AFP) Summit in Clarkston last Saturday. The debate was polite but at times spirited as moderator Phil Kerpen, VP of Policy at AFP asked the candidates a wide range of questions in the 90 minute debate. When the candidates were asked their position on the MI FairTax all candidates spoke favorably of the proposal. The MI FairTax is a 9.75% retail sales tax that would replace the current 6% sales tax, 4.35% Michigan personal income tax and most business taxes. Michigan's Republican candidates for governor will debate for the first time on September 26th at the Biennial Republican Mackinac Island Leadership Conference. The Michigan Taxpayers Alliance will host the event, which will focus on state tax, budget and fiscal issues.
"The Michigan Taxpayers Alliance is pleased to provide a format for taxpayers to hear what candidates for governor have to say about solving Michigan's financial woes," said MTA Director Leon Drolet. "Michigan voters need to scrutinize their future leaders more than ever before. Taxpayers deserve specific proposals to fix Michigan and straight answers." The debate will be emceed by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. Mr. Patterson will direct a top-flight panel that will question the Republican hopefuls for governor. That panel will consist of John Fund, columnist for the Wall Street Journal; Stephen Henderson, editorial page editor of the Detroit Free Press; and Kathy Hoekstra of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Ms. Hoekstra is not related to Congressman and gubernatorial candidate Pete Hoekstra. The invited GOP candidates for governor are Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, Attorney General Mike Cox, Congressman Pete Hoekstra and Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder. The debate will be open to Conference attendees and media, and be held at 7:30AM at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.
The MI Taxpayers Alliance is hosting the debate as a public service to Michigan taxpayers and does not endorse candidates for public office. By Nick, Section News
Attorney General and 2010 gubernatorial candidate Mike Cox recently sat down with RightMichigan to speak with conservative activists and the Right Roots about his bid to become the state's next chief executive. Just a few of the highlights include-
RightMichigan: On the decision of other GOP candidates to oppose a no-new-taxes pledge: Cox: "I'm very disappointed that I'm the only Republican... you know, I expect some Democrats might be against a no-tax pledge, but I don't think that the problem is we're sending too little money to Lansing..." RightMichigan: On a new constitutional convention? Cox: "I'm afraid of mischief... I like the amendment process much better... I don't like these stealth projects like we saw last year with RMGN." RightMichigan: Cherry's decision to duck the candidate debate on Mackinac Island? Cox: He ducked us. Absolutely. Isn't that telling? Part of that is, if I were him, I don't know what I could say. We are last place in employment, third from worst in business taxes, we increased income taxes and he was the final vote a year and a half ago. He's been wrong on all of the issues so I can understand why he doesn't want to talk about them." And much more...

Apparently John Cherry has better things to do. As Dennis mentioned this morning, the Democrats likely 2010 gubernatorial candidate is making waves on Mackinac Island today by refusing to participate in a candidate forum with other candidates from both major Parties.
Pete Hoekstra will be there. Terri Lynn Land will be there. Tom George will be there. Mike Cox will be there the day after officially announcing his candidacy along with a pledge to cut taxes on Michigan residents by a full $2 BILLION! Heck, even radical pro-abortion candidate Alma Wheeler Smith will be there representing the Democrats. Cherry... not so much. Then again, if I were a part of a Democratic administration that was responsible for the largest tax hike in Michigan history, chronic budget "deficits" and thorough economic stagnation I'd probably duck a debate in front of the state's most prominent business leaders, too. Why give voters... ANY voters... any extra opportunity to examine the goods... so to speak? At first I thought we were looking at a case of abject political cowardice but I've since mellowed. I hadn't considered the alternative. Read on... (3 comments, 442 words in story) Full Story By isaacmorehouse, Section News
