Following the break is the sermon delivered this morning by Rev. Steve Schamber, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wyoming, Michigan (the church of which I am a member).  I'm reposting it here because I think we all need the reminder.

But voters didn't give Republicans a mandate to drag the state to the far right on contentious social issues.

And yet last week, the Legislature sent to the governor a bill banning public employers from offering domestic partner benefits. It strips local communities and school districts of the right to shape benefit packages that make sense for their workers, and places Michigan outside the mainstream of current employment practices.

Exactly what "mainstream" would Mr. Finley be referring to?  Governor Moonbeams' bankrupt California?  Harry Reids' foreclosure epicenter Nevada?  Stanley Ann Dunhams' Hawaii?  C'mon Nolan, there are only 7 other Democratic Party controlled states left to hold up for your "mainstream" meme.  Mr. Finley, should also note the State of Wisconsin is smack in the face of his next double-down on the Michigan Legislature.

I have some ideas for an original score for this, but in the meantime thought it newsworthy and relevant to the issues of the day, so have made it avialable right away.  The other day, I had mentioned SB0160 will soon sign into law the ban on the horrific "partial birth abortion" practice.  Perhaps we can do even more in the future.

Unfortunately, President Obama is expected to make true the worst fears of defenders of innocent life.  ABC News reports that he is today expected to sign an executive order overturning the Mexico City Policy, in effect permitting American tax dollars to be spent funding abortions around the world.  

Abortion WILL become more frequent, today, with untold thousands of innocent lives snuffed out between this date and the reinstatement of the policy upon the election of a pro-life replacement in the White House.  Compounding the tragedy is the fact that you and I will be paying for the killings.  

Simply put, elections have consequences.  We cannot, for a single moment, allow ourselves to be plied by sugar-coated speeches, popular sentiment and the adulation of the mainstream media.  How men and women who claim to be pro-life can justify their vote for this man in light of today's action... I just plain don't get it.

As heartbreaking as today's executive order is, though, the testimony, conviction and commitment of the men and women and children who came together yesterday in DC is equally encouraging.  And they weren't alone.

Yesterday hundreds gathered at the steps of the Capitol in Lansing, Michigan as well.  It was cold, it was windy and it was overcast... the meteorological equivalent of the political climate for life, but there wasn't an ounce of quit or loss of compassion in these families.

Nearly a dozen legislators were in attendance... Representatives Rick Jones, Tom McMillin, Matt Lori... Democratic Senator John Gleason.  Senator Alan Cropsey spoke to the crowd, encouraging them to continue championing life and reminding everyone of the importance of the cause.  He cautioned that the new administration would likely attempt, soon, to overturn the global gag order and encouraged folks to press their Congressmen hard and frequently to influence the administration in the cause of life.  

Today the President made Cropsey a prophet.  And now I can only wonder how Senator Gleason rationalizes his support of a man that helped enable the new slaughter of thousands of children across the globe.

Today, in commemoration of perhaps the darkest day in the history of the United States, millions of Americans will take to the streets from Washington, DC to Lansing, Michigan to stand in solidarity with humanity itself, born and unborn, man and woman, pregnant and not, in defense of innocent life.  

One of these years I WILL make my way to DC for the national march for life.  200,000 are expected to march on the Capitol today to deliver the message to our new President and Congress that life is precious and worth defending.  

I'm still here, in-state, but that doesn't mean my options are limited and it doesn't mean yours are either.  Right to Life of Michigan has assembled a comprehensive list of activities happening in-state today and throughout the week and there's probably one right around the corner from you.  Give it a look.

The Right to Life affiliates of Greater Lansing, Central Michigan, Mason Area, Clinton County, Eaton County and Grand Ledge invite you to join them as they meet for a Rally at the State Capitol to remember and mourn the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in the United States. This event will take place on January 22, 2009, from 4:15-5:00 p.m. at the East Front steps of the State Capitol. The speaker for this event will be State Senator Alan Cropsey. Cookies and hot drinks will be served after the Rally at Right to Life of Michigan's legislative office at 233 N. Walnut.

Barring anything unforeseen I'll be there myself.  Hope you'll make it too.  Take the afternoon off if you have to.  This one is important.
