There isn't a day that goes by that the families of our fallen do not miss their sons, daughters, and significant others. Not a day in which those families do not remember the sacrifice made on our behalf.
Our soldiers lost, and their families. May God bless them everyday. By Kevin Rex Heine, Section News
A service flag or service banner in the United States is an official banner that family members of service members in harm's way can display. The flag or banner is defined as a white field with a red border, with a blue star for each family member in active duty. A gold star (with a blue edge) represents a family member that died during service, without specifying cause of death. There is no analogous banner known in other countries, which makes the service flags a uniquely American tradition (which dates back to 1917).
And, via my friend Matt Hauser at MIGOP's Veteran and Military Families Monthly News, yesterday I learned of something specific that the State of Michigan is doing to honor the families of those of have given the last full measure of devotion in service to our country.

Not a bad way to start the Memorial day weekend. A bad back, fighting to keep the starter plants alive through overnight frost, and the county budget still with a great gaping hole.
Nothing says "hello summer!" like an adversarial life situation. But I suppose its not too bad. The back is only one part of me, the county has programs to cut, and the plants would die of neglect anyhow. And in the big picture, there are bigger fish fries to be had. So I figured I would let you know there is some good news. I am polling Michigan State Representatives and Senators for an upcoming article on Freedom to work (right-to-work) initiatives. I have received almost half of their replies so far, and mostly all of them are going to be with the winning side of freeing our workers to work where their skills find them. Free to work, with no regard to a forced union membership or dues in lieu of said membership. Predictably, the Democrats who have answered so far do not believe in worker freedom. I must give them credit however, for answering my inquiries, with the full understanding of who I am, and where the article will be written. As we prepare for the Memorial Day weekend, I still encourage those good servants of our state to reconsider any opposition to the concept of freedom to work they may hold. ~ More below ~ (715 words in story) Full Story By JGillman, Section News

Aside from the barbecue, picnics, and travel plans, consider taking a moment and offering a prayer or moment of silence to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on this country's behalf. These are two Michigan based articles I thought were worth taking a look at..

Today isn't any other Monday. Memorial Day these days tends to be a day for cookouts and camping but there's also a certain weight that makes the average day's snark seem mildly out of place.
So we'll forgo it today. That's right, I'm not going to pick on the Ivory Tower for their ridiculously disconnected suggestion that Michigan's real problem is that it taxes too little, all-but urging Lansing to raise taxes across the board by 4 percent in the middle of the toughest economy in the last ninety years. No sense in going into the Detroit News report that Detroit City Councilwoman and Democrat JoAnn Watson is now embroiled in a massive tax-cheating scandal that make's Governor Granholm's problems with the tax-man (and multiple tax liens) look light weight. Not even going to pick on the AP editor who somehow managed to headline an article with a sentence that starts "50 Cent" and ends "shot in Grand Rapids." And you know how much I love Fitty. Instead, I'm going to track down my dad and my brothers and tell them "thanks" for the time they spent serving our country and putting themselves on the line to protect the rest of us. And I'm going to take some time to remember those who never came home. Those guys are my heroes. All of them. They're yours too, whether you know it or not, so find a couple yourself in between the burgers and the dogs and say thanks! |
