What is the purpose of a political party?  Asking nearly anyone in politics, the most common answer is that it is to raise money and elect candidates.  A simple enough reason to exist, utilizing varying methods of fundraising and activities to realize the desired result. Goals are made, (elect the candidate) and presumably the shortest route is plotted to achieve those goals.  Most folks might even think this accomplishes what is necessary to be properly represented; "we got our guy in", and "now there is nothing to worry about".

That particular perspective is lazy, presumptuous, and frankly pretty dangerous when one considers the power (and trust) we vest in our elected officials.

The Republican party ought not be so relaxed in its commonly accepted role of managing the benevolence of donors, keeping a place in line for electoral hopefuls, and delivering the occasional platitude release berating the opposing party however.  Opposition because some are on the other side often follows, but that it provides red-meat for the membership is nearly too simple and unimaginative.  And it is incomplete as other responsibilities become more clear alongside the breakdown of the social fabric and dissolution of individual liberties we face in multiple affronts daily.

The purpose for the existence of the Michigan Republican party could be driven so much more clearly, and the basis for action already exists within the organization.

We DO have a platform, do we not?

Given The governor's HARD SELL of a tax increase, it was a relief to have the house majority leader point out that he thinks "the taxpayers are the last place to look" for money needed to fix our roads.  But the video as seen in one of our postings just up and disappeared!

Oh My.

Did I mention redundancy?

Indeed.  The "LAST PLACE TO LOOK" is the taxpayer!  Thank you Jase!  

A seat held for multiple terms by a Democrat, saw a number of candidates make a bid in the Republican primary.  Those candidates sensing the public has finally begun to understand a Democrat shift leftward towards socialism, decided the time was at hand to make a run for that office.  The primary produced a conservative Republican candidate, and a Democrat candidate who is likely to be fairly similar to Stupak. (Without the baggage of lying to his constituents)  

It seemed as though the race would be clear.  Whomever delivers a solid message that speaks to the values of CD1 voters would win the seat.  And given the sentiment towards the administration which has not yet gotten it right, a Republican victory by Dan Benishek seemed to be the most likely outcome.  A 4-5 point victory perhaps, and maybe even tighter if the big labor element and the Michigan Democrat party spends a few dollars propping up its candidate.
