Tag: Conservatism (page 4)By JGillman, Section News
A friend attended the Romney campaign event at the Park Place Dome in Traverse City Michigan, and bought himself a hat.
Each Presidential Election cycle, he has bought a trinket, or Souvenir or shirt etc, and in the past he has bought a few hats. For a moment, ignore the subtle tagline that is Oh-So-Apropriate, and note his objection was that for the first time, a hat he bought from a Republican presidential effort came from China. Saying as little as necessary, this tag says so very much. (5 comments) Comments >> By JenKuznicki, Section News
When campaigns gather information from strategists, one of the most annoying things I notice is the importance placed on poll-tested buzz words. In a Republican primary, where every candidate seeks to gain the vote of its base, the biggest buzz word is 'conservative.'
During the 2010 elections, newly active conservatives (the tea party) worked to unseat Democrats who played the big buzz word but then voted for the wholesale take over of the health industry. They also worked to primary (negate incumbency) life-time anointed Republicans who hadn't really been scrutinized in the past. The actions of the tea party showed they didn't need to be told who is more conservative, they understood instinctively. One of my favorite quotes from Margaret Thatcher is, "Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't." I have used that quote in the past referring to conservative candidates. If you have to tell people you are a conservative, you aren't. But Mitt Romney really stepped in it at CPAC. I've read that he was supposed to say he was a conservative governor, and that he ad-libbed the word 'severely.' That may or not be true, but to use both words suggests neither have meaning. Now this is unbelievable. A couple of Marines decided to treat a few dead Taliban terrorists to a good old fashioned "golden shower."

A political friend wrote to me on the rail issue and Mayor Daniels stand against using those federal dollars. Quoting the New York Times article, he asked:
"Is there more to this strategy? Or is our best hope for change based on the martyrdom of political kamikazes? My reply as all too often, was a curt "Won't matter in a couple years anyhow". That was Christmas morning. Looking back at the question again, I decided it warranted a better reply. First of all, the sender is a very good conservative ally, and secondly, is likely to ascend to higher office in the foreseeable future. I felt he needed a better explanation.

There! That should put to bed all the revisionist Reagan centrist crap habitually written on here. It never sold with me anyway. By JGillman, Section News
An accomplice (friend - coworker) of mine suggests today that the timing for the OWS is curious.
He points out the occupy efforts have been quite well organized and publicized. Not only so much more than the tea party protests, but in fact more so than the ongoing selection effort being made within the Republican party to find its flag bearer. He opines "As the conservative message is being discussed, being advocated through the debates, it is being lost in the white noise of the OWS coverage" Instant recall of the last few front page views of the local fishwrap reminds me that the volume in recent stories of our Republican possibles or their message being reported is down. Curious. Thoughts? (4 comments) Comments >> By JGillman, Section News
In Canada?
Well, maybe not the tea party, but shades of it in the conservative juggernaut that has gripped Michigan's bordering neighbor. It seems that conservative values are becoming universally more popular as the failure of neo liberalism, (progressivism) become more evident with failing economies worldwide.
In recent elections, Canada's conservative party headed by Stephen Harper has not only gained power but has done so with prejudice: " ... Mr. Harper would stage a comeback, bringing the Conservatives to power first in 2006 and again in 2008 as leader of minority governments. Finally, on Monday, he scored the first non-Liberal majority in 23 years." While conservatives here might be even less inclined to some of the social meandering than their Canadian counterparts, this still represents a major shift in consideration of governments role, and might also offer hope for those who think conservatives here might be demoralized enough by certain media reports to abandon the movement that will further repair the political environment in 2012.
Pay attention MR Snyder. While you are accepting money from the federal government for the implementation of the unconstitutional health care mandate, you should note what one of Canada's early leading socialized medicine advocates had already said years ago. "We thought we could resolve the system's problems by rationing services or injecting massive amounts of new money into it," says Castonguay. But now he prescribes a radical overhaul: "We are proposing to give a greater role to the private sector so that people can exercise freedom of choice." And that was merely the first hint that the liberalism run rampant in Canada was destroying an overall quality of life many had become accustomed to. Medicine, once available to all, deteriorated in the progressive/leftist/liberal health care "rights" model that developed, and the man considered its father said "mmm maybe not such a grand idea."
