Not So Fast With The PC Jack! Err.. Uhmm Henry.By JGillman, Section News
Most would consider Henry Payne at the Michigan View as a pretty good guy. I would say he could even be considered "conservative" and most of his positions would justify that. Most often we could agree in fact with what his opinion of the day might be.
But sometimes he is wrong. Straight out, absolutely mistaken.
Today Payne opines: " ... Not to be outdone, the Right's religious crazies decided to attack The Learning Channel and its advertisers for airing a positive show about five American Muslim families in Dearborn. No, not making it up, but so what? And frankly what makes them crazy? Because they are religious? Or because they perceive a threat from Islam; "the Religion of Peace?" I would really be interested in what it is about those Christian crazies that threatens Mr Payne. Certainly not that they will blow up a plane that he is on with shoe based incendiaries, or crotch explosives. Undoubtedly not a collision with a Tower at an unfortunate time. Probably not a soldier opening fire on his brothers and screaming "Jesus Akbar!!" Perhaps, just maybe, it is those crazy values like free speech and intelligent consideration of real and ongoing threats? Threats backed up by recurring "man-made disasters?" Maybe it stems from the very real fear people have of saying "Merry Christmas" during this time of year? Below ~
Whatever it is, lets take a look at how crazy it is to have concerns about a sponsor's legitimate right to NOT support what it doesn't want to support.
Advertisers such as Lowes often get tossed in the mix in these ways on a number of potentially explosive social issues. Sometimes it may be perceived homophoberie or racial gerrymandering. (either too much or not enough) And in this case, one side or another finds reason to imagine they support the new caliphate, or fear a phony boogeyman as Mr Payne might have us believe. No matter what they do, their fate is sealed. Somewhere there will be a sign toting "Religious Nutjob" as Payne would ascribe, or a seriously offended moderate Muslim cleric crying "racism!" No matter which side it picks, an advertiser cannot ignore the numbers and who its customers are. In this case the percentage of less than 1% of the country's population which are actual Muslims, and maybe another 5-10% of actually indignant and offended potential (other) patrons who will not shop at Lowes, versus the 76% of Christians (minus the indignant few) who could care less. Those numbers from a business-only-approach make sense. And further, advertising has not yet been made a mandate subject to government monitored anti-discriminatory nonsense. But lets look at some OTHER numbers Mr Payne. Numbers that if taken at face value alone, ought to concern any rational thinker. Numbers you don't have to be "crazy" to understand.
From the Islamists themselves, radical Islam is only 7% of their population. A Teeny Tiny 7%. This according to Gallup, which performed a multi-year polling of Muslims throughout the world. In fact that particular polling also revealed that as much 35% of those in the process found the attacks on the World Trade Center towers to be "justified" in some way. The difference of those number represented by the term "moderate" and seen as acceptable by pundits of all ideological persuasions. But continuing, Payne Opines: " In fact, Christian groups should applaud "Muslim" precisely because it is a celebration of liberty and traditional family values. Were these values embraced in next-door, inner city Detroit, there would be a lot less pain in the world. "All-American Muslim" is a window into what makes America great - an immigrant culture (in this case, Middle eastern) that celebrates family, education, and hard work to afford the next generation a better opportunity. I would caution that "tradition" is not always a good thing Mr Payne. I wonder if some of that "traditional" Americanism would be christian persecution that the police officers in this video series demonstrated. Perhaps it is the police officer in the show? Somewhere in the archives, there is a Henry Payne article calling THAT abuse of power in America "crazy", but I haven't located it yet. Of course free speech by crazy Christians must be limited. Especially if it fits the politically correct landscape of extreme tolerance. Those who see danger and respond in some way to call it out are to be tried in this court of public opinion, and it must be especially politically correct if coming from a friend of the right. Maybe its just easier to close one's eyes to the reality of proselytization as done by two quite opposite religious factions; one by sacrifice of one man for our sins, and the other through sacrifice of those who would follow that one man to the hand of God. And as an aside, nowhere in the Christian group's effort to correct the positive view of Islam (propaganda) the show represents, does anyone extol the virtues of crime in Detroit, and its absolute vacuum of family values. And while the ink is still running, let us return to the 7% number which alone can stand as a testament to the danger in out midst. Using that number alone as an indicator of who might be willing to submit to the will of Allah through murderous intent, means 90 million folks on this planet are absolute enemies of our culture and OUR traditions, and (and for Christians) OUR savior. We have already seen that men who were considered to be "American" were willing to sacrifice themselves to murder other Americans for their peaceful religion. We cannot ignore them. I wonder how many more live within the largest settlement of Islam that exists in, where else? Dearborn Michigan. I wonder aloud enough to have made this post. Call me politically incorrect. Perhaps even crazy I guess. And Merry Christmas Henry.
