Are we looking at the beginnings of a REAL Tea Party Party?By KG One, Section News
While I like the message that the Tea Party Movement has conveyed locally and nationally, one of the things that has always concerned me is the fact that it is too quick to jump into bed with the republican candidates.
Yes, I know that its genesis came from FreedomWorks, which is connected to big players from the GOP, and that part of its focus was to build up grassroots (ostensibly to support republican candidates). But less government, lower taxes and more freedom, who could argue with that philosophy? {More of this after the fold}
But much to its surprise, it succeeded far better than its founders ever hoped it would. So much so, that it has taken upon a life of its own and even republicans find themselves in the cross-hairs of irate voters when they stray from the principles they supposedly support.
But there was a story this week that really got my ears to perk up: Michigan 4 Conservative Senate wants all Tea Party Members to unite under one candidate to take out Debbie Stabenow. Great idea, except for one small problem: Tea Party Members aren't backing Pete Hoekstra, the candidate GOP blue-bloods want us to support (and whom I feel is the real reason for this idea). This has been an ongoing problem for some time now. From the less than expected response he received at a MEDEFCO Meet the Candidates Night last year.
To the Mid-Michigan TEA Party Patriots forum, on Sept. 29 in DeWitt in which he got an even less warmer reception. I haven't heard about the reaction from his lack of actually being there at the Plainwell Patriots event last night (anyone who attended please feel free to chime in about how that went). To make things even more interesting, there still isn't a candidate that ALL Tea Party members are really rallying behind yet. For the moment, I'm still sticking with Konetchy. Some Glenn. Others I've spoken with like Durant. Some are still undecided. Fair enough. I agree with their underlying concept: Stabenow needs to go. But I fail to see where replacing Stabenow, with someone who votes just like Stabenow (only with a "-r" after their name) will in any way make things better. Another problem with this proposal is that after they have a convention and straw poll to nominate one candidate to support, they want to everyone to throw their support behind that one candidate. Yeah, good luck with that! I like the idea that they're floating here, but there are just way too many variables to be worked out. Unfortunately, far too many before next year's election.
On a related side note: MEDEFCO will be having as their guest speaker this month Gary Glenn from the American Family Association. Mr. Glenn is among a list of speakers that MEDEFCO has been inviting to speak before the membership. This month's meeting will take place Tuesday, November 22nd at 7pm and the Bruce Post VFW Hall on Jefferson just North of 11 Mile Road. More information can be found on this link.
