Buyer BewareBy RNC Chairman Michael Steele, Section News
Let's get Michigan's economy back on track!
Wednesday, we watched President Obama in Pennsylvania peddle expansive government programs as the solution to our nation's economic woes. As Michigan's unemployment hovers around 14.0%, the highest in the nation, I wanted to take a moment and give the President a sobering reminder what thousands across Michigan already know: 48 out of 50 states have lost jobs since the failed was signed into law.
Estimates on job growth in the month of May are predicted to be somewhere between 500,000 and 600,000 jobs gained, and Vice President Biden hasn't been shy about using those statistics as a fundraising tool. While I will welcome job growth any day, week or month of the year, this month needs to be stamped with "Buyer Beware."
It has been widely reported that over 400,000 jobs will only be for temporary workers hired by the government to help conduct the once-a-decade Census. So while Democrats across Michigan such as Virg Bernero, Andy Dillon, Mark Schauer, and Gary Peters will be lining up to do an endzone dance touting their tax and spend policies: Michiganders beware.
History shows us that these workers will be laid off again in only a matter of months, so while job growth is always a good thing, temporary government jobs are not what Michigan needs to get the economy back on the right track. This government's unprecedented growth, with little to show for it, is staggering.
The national debt has reached an astounding $13 trillion. To reach that first trillion dollars, it took the federal government 206 years - to go from $12 trillion to $13 trillion under the Obama administration, it took only 6 months.
Michigan needs leaders from the bottom of the ballot all the way to the top that will fight for lower taxes and less wasteful spending to get Michigan's economy back on track. --RNC Chairman Michael Steele
