Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

Who should stay and who should go now?

The US Census released its final numbers for Michigan this morning.

    Is anyone really surprised?

    {Story continued below the fold.}

According to the US Census, Michigan experienced a population drop of 0.6% and will be losing one congressional seat in the coming months.

So, who gets voted off of the isl..., er, who loses their cushy seat in '12?

An obvious choice is to do what was done back in '02 and combine two seats like what was done with Dingell & Rivers (remember her?).

Personally, I'd like to see the Mi-13 & Mi-14 districts merged into one merged into one district.

So in 2012, you'll have John Conyers, husband of esteemed Monica Conyers. Busy congressman. Responsible representative of the people. Oh, and did I mention that he is involved with the local DSA chapter?

He would be running against Hansen Clarke who beat out Mama Kilpatrick last August.

Hansen Clarke can be best considered as a John Conyers-lite.

Oh, he has some of his tendencies like insurance "reform", paying students from DPS for getting good grades, and prohibiting foreclosures in Michigan for up to two years...just to name a few.

    What say you?

Who should stay and who should go?

Look at the numbers (none / 0) (#1)

The closer we can get the better for draw overs.

The question is could more votes be squeezed off by pulling Peter's slight margin off and shifting over to do the super majority thing to someone who already has one..

    Voting Rights Act (none / 0) (#2)

The trouble with merging the two Detroit districts together is that it would likely run afoul of the Voting Rights Act.  This act protects requires the creation of black-majority districts when possible and stops them from being dismatled.  Both of the Detroit-based districts will have to expand into the current surrounding districts, most likely those of Dingell and McCotter.

Carving up Peters' district is the obvious choice because there aren't that many democrats to distribute to the surrounding districts.  You can basically give all the democratic areas to Sander Levin and add the rest to Republican districts.

get rid of Peters!  Combine district 9 with 11 and have Thaddeus McCotter represent me.

    Why 13th and 14th? (none / 0) (#18)

The problem with merging the two is that you're taking a district that has a strong Republican constituency in it (Grosse Pointes), elected a moderate Democrat in Hansen Clarke, and ensuring it will be solidly blue for the next 10 years. Kicking out Mamma Kwame and replacing her with Clarke is a sign of progress in the district; while still a Democrat, he has been much more willing to work with our side than the "other one". Republicans made gains, and Hansen seems to be taking a strong anti-tax and anti-deficit stance relative to the other liberals. Looking at the 15th and 7th districts, that's where I'd like to see consolidation. With the gains Steele had versus Dingell, consolidation and redistricting may make the 15th Red.

Take out Peters and Levin (none / 0) (#19)

Dingell's probably the best we can get with a district with Ann Arbor, Ypsi, and Downriver in it. Monroe flipped hard, and southern downriver is less blue, but Ann Arbor is a big, big, problem.

Kildee's district needs to snake back down to take Pontiac and if possible West Bloomfield too. The rich yuppie dems need to get stuck with a labor guy.

I'd put Southeast Oakland County in with the John Conyers district. Southfield and Oak Park are black majority. Royal Oak Southward can be tossed in there with part of Detroit. Buh Bye Levin.

As for Peters, if I can get this past county breaks, I have a new district with Lapeer County, part of Sanillac, going south to take Eastern Oakland and Western Macomb Counties. Bloomfield Township itself I have with McCotter's district which takes more of Oakland, rural Washtenaw, and drops Belleville/Van Buren to Dingell and Redford to Conyers.

I'm waiting on the new County/Municipal census numbers to get better district reads, but Levin's district needs to go with Conyers, and Peters district needs to be eliminated. I have Benishek's district going more west, Upton taking all of Allegan County, Walberg losing Eaton (to Camp) and part of Washtenaw (Northern to McCotter, Scio to Dingell) and gaining most of Barry and most of Monroe. I haven't run the numbers yet though, so these are just brainstorms.

    County Breaks (none / 0) (#21)
by Conservative First on Thu Dec 23, 2010 at 02:32:53 PM EST
    RM:

I'd like to see a picture of this map.  It sounds like it has too many county breaks.

I have an outline for a map with only ten county breaks.  It creates nine reasonable safe GOP districts and a tenth that leans democrat but is winnable.  But as you said, we have to wait for exact population numbers.
