Michigan Needs a Primary: Michigan Manufacturers

Are factory jobs important to you?  Michigan manufacturing?  The Big Three?  The survival of the domestic auto industry and the American middle class?  Think these are topics it'd be important to have discussed by candidates running to become the next leader of the free world?

Take a look at the top headlines about the difference in profit margins between foreign and domestic car companies in today's Detroit News:

According to a study released Tuesday, the difference widened to $3,814 per vehicle in 2006, a 32 percent rise over 2005 levels.

That gap helps explain the huge discrepancy between the financial performance of Japan's top three carmakers, which earned more than $10 billion in the United States last year, and U.S. automakers, which lost money in their home market.

And what was it we heard time and time again from big labor and their puppets in the Democrat party?  It's the PRESIDENT'S fault!  There are so many factors that go into it and they all lead back to POTUS.  Remember, "NAFTA and CAFTA gave us the SHAFTA!"

Why, once the labor unions get wind of that new study they'll start passing blame (like clockwork).

The UAW had no comment on Tuesday's report, but it previously has criticized Japan's currency policy as being tantamount to trade subsidies.

Last week, when Toyota reported a record $4.1 billion net profit for the April-June quarter, (the UAW) said favorable currency rates accounted for more than half of the 32 percent operating profit gain.

Nevermind the fact that domestic auto makers shell out anywhere from $1,200-$1,500 more in employee compensation per vehicle.  There's still a big gap there.

This is an issue that candidates running for President should be concerned with.  It's an issue they should address.  But they won't, unless they're here in Michigan, paying attention to Michigan issues and listening to Michigan workers.

    Read on...

And guess what... they won't do any of that without action in Lansing to approve a joint primary on February 5th or sooner.  It's not just the right thing to do for the moms and dads struggling to make a living in this state, it's a no brainer.

The Lefty Detroit Free Press agrees, opining this morning:

The candidates need to come here, not just to raise money and split, but to meet with displaced workers and the leaders of Michigan's embattled manufacturing sector, to explain their trade policies and what they intend to do about health care and pension funds, to talk about their positions on CAFE and education, and whether this nation needs an urban agenda. If it's going to be caucuses and a convention, they'll just send mass e-mails to Michigan and spend their face time in states where people are voting.

The Michigan Democrat Party agrees.  They worked with MRP to tailor legislation for a joint primary.

The Michigan Republican Party agrees.  They worked with MDP to tailor legislation for a joint primary.

Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop agrees.  He's scheduled a vote on the bill two weeks from today and they've got the votes to move it.

But for whatever reason, whether he's hoping to use it as a bargaining chip, thinks a joint primary won't benefit his preferred candidate or just plain wants to screw with Michigan voters House Speaker Andy Dillon refuses to schedule a vote.

And the Governor?  She's completely silent.  She could get things moving if she'd have a sit down with Andy.  I'm not going to hold my breath but she should and soon.  The House is taking six days off after today.  Plenty of time to schedule a meeting.

    Michigan manufacturing deserves a vote.

a big part of that gap? Isn't that because our leading competitors have nationalized health care so the Toyotas of the world aren't paying those costs directly?

ARE a part of that gap, yes.

And if you're a Michigan resident who believes we need socialized medicine it'd probably be a good idea to get the attention of Presidential candidates, don't you think?

It's OK, you're allowed to agree on principal once in a while without trying to just muddy the conversation.  I won't even tell anyone.  Your neo-comm status won't be called into question.

Toyota was paying its people in the US comparable to what people get paid by the big three. So the differential likely isn't due to costs in the US but worldwide including Japan where Toyota has a major presence and the big 3 does not. Did you not get coffee this morning JG?

Let's get with the program and do what's best for Michigan...let the voters pick the nominee on BOTH sides.  The legislation currently in the Senate would do just that.  It's time for both Republican and Democrat party bosses to get out of the way.
