President Has Had to Endure More than Almost Any Other Predecessor

What do the following events have in common?

The 9/11 Terrorist Attacks
The 2003 Blackout
The Columbia Shuttle Disaster
Hurricane Katrina
Economic Recession

Answer? All of these things happened while George W. Bush was sitting in the Oval Office and NONE of them were his fault. These events are all unprecedented and even some are catastrophic, but there is nothing more that the president could have done.

Yet despite these challenges, the United States (excluding Michigan) has recovered from its economic recession caused by the dotcom bubble burst and the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we have not had a terrorist attack on our homeland in nearly six years, we have dismantled terrorist organizations and gotten their leaders to give us information that will likely lead to more captures, and we have dramatically advanced America's course in pursing alternative energies and addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

This seems very impressive for any presidential administration, but unfortunately, Bush's approval rating still hovers around 30 to 35 percent. When you really look at it, the vast majority of Americans are better off now than they were before Bush was in office, so why the grudge?

Granted Katrina wasn't exactly the Bush Administration's finest moment, but at the same time nobody could have possibly predicted the amount of devastation that was unleashed on the New Orleans area. Local, state and federal authorities had no idea that they would be dealing with the amount of chaos that Katrina left, so blaming them seems a moot point, especially when considering the rate of recovery that New Orleans had with the help of those some local, state and federal authorities. So why the grudge?

Well it's easy to know why, it's the elephant in the room that until now I've chosen to ignore (intentionally). It is the one word that opponents of the administration need only utter in order to win a debate in the arena of public opinion: "Iraq".

I'm still very young (despite the fact that I recently celebrated my being on this earth a quarter of a century. A quarter of a century!), but as I look through history, I don't think anyone will find another presidential administration whose legacy is so closely tied to one event (save Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War). I'm not going to use this post to discuss the merits of what happened in Iraq over the past four years, my point simply is why do the American people hold this administration to everything terrible in that country while seemingly ignoring everything that is good in this country?

Certainly, Iraq is a critical issue, and if it wasn't a key battle in the war on terror before we went in, it most certainly is now. Our brave men and women in uniform are fighting and dying for our freedom and that should ALWAYS be discussed and remembered. And yes, the administration has made its share of mistakes managing the situation so I can see why that is such a strong focus, but my point is simply this: if you approach a liberal and ask them, "without mentioning anything to do with Iraq, why are you so strongly opposed to what the Bush Administration has done?"

The internal struggle that follows is a bit comical as they will search for just about anything else to bring up so that they don't look like they're hating Bush in order to "fit in". But here's what needs to be understood, for whatever reason (I blame the media's bias. How often have we heard this: Guantanamo, Abu-Ghraib, Scooter Libby, 3,000 dead in Iraq, and now, Alberto Gonzales. The media seems to be conveniently forgetting that this country is at war with enemies that are foreign and domestic), it is almost a fad now to dislike the president. Saying you're a Bush supporter in a public setting has become almost as controversial and offensive as blurting out there is no God. But in the end, when you have an opportunity to explain yourself, you'll know there are several reasons why we should continue supporting the president, and maybe we can convince some other people along the way.

Good opinion column.
Since 9-11 the mainstream media has wavered from the war on terror. One reason is because we have yet to get OBL. Not really our fault as Pakistan is not given us the green light to go in to their Northwest Territory to nail him. Pak. has pretty much washed their hands of that lawless territory of theirs but will protect their territorial integrity. Something the mainstream media can't (or won't) understand.
SO they have drilled in to the American publics mind that Bush doesn't really care.
They fail to understand (also) that the war in Iraq has long since been done. It's now just two factions fighting it out for control. AQ is there (I knew they would show up when we went in) and are the real ones killing our troops. The media won't acknowledge this as much as they will say that it's a civil war and that it's Bush's fault.
And finally most Americans don't know that what they see in the mainstream media is bias, they take it as WHOLE fact.

I agree that the media and the democrats have been relentless in their attacks on Bush. However, he has brought a lot of it on himself. He has appointed some inept people, he seemed out of touch when it came to Katrina, although, as a boss you have to rely on your people who did fail him. He seemed to arrogant when it came to the war in Iraq and was slow to respond when things were starting to turn bad.

He might be a bright man, but at times, he just doesn't seem to get it. The firing of the eight attorney's is just another example of letting the dems define the moment. If he would have just come out and say that these people serve at his pleasure and can be fired for any reason that would have ended it. However, his administration let this fester for days and have now tried to come up with excuses instead of just telling everyone TOUGH!

Let's face it, Bush has done more harm to the Republicans than anyone in the dem party has. Perception is everything in politics and the perception is Bush is a bad President.

It's hilarious to hear him pick on dems for hating Bush just because it's the in thing to do.The fact that thirty five percent of America views Bush favorably shows that there is a healthy amount of republicans that will defend him no matter how poorly he's doing.True no one could of imagined how horrible Katrina was going to be it speaks volumes about Bush that his Fema director had no experience in disaster relief. His vice president recently was surrounded by scandal. His own party pressured him to fire his secretary of defense. His secretary of state only stayed one term because he didn't like the direction the administration was headed. The country is swimming in massive debt from tax breaks for the wealthy and the cost of the war.NO child left behind is under funded and his medicare bill was a gift to the drug companies but to diffucult for most seniors to understand. There are plenty of reasons to be unhappy with his performance.

Bush - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly (none / 0) (#4)
by Bridget on Sat Mar 17, 2007 at 10:45:58 AM EST

Hello RM Readers,

In response to Nick's article, I feel for an informed and compassionate person of the human race it's important to look at someone in such a critical role as that of President from many sides:

their personal character,
how they conduct themselves in private,
their selected aids/officials and appointees,
their public demeanor
their administrative policies
and so on.

Too many citizens look at this President and say, he is no good because they don't "care for the way he does things" (i.e, the way he speaks, the way he smiles, the way he walks, his I.Q., his family affiliation, etc).

Anonymous Hero feels Bush only polls in the 30's these days - I am guessing he takes that as a sure sign President Bush is a first class looser on all these things as far as the American people can tell via weekly polling results. I think that's a narrow way to view something as complicated as the President and the Presidency of the U.S. Poll questions are often worded to get specific results these days so, take the question and results with a serious grain of salt.

The GOOD...I'm confident if you ask people deeper and more meaningful questions, I think you will find many don't care for his policy as it differs from theirs, but on a whole, they will agree he seems to be a good and decent man and seems to have the interests of all at heart. Time will forgive a man who has good intentions even if the final result was not perfect. As Nick noted so accurately, outside of the Iraq issue...he has an amazing number of positives on his check list (things such as prescription medicines for seniors - started out rough, but working much better now, no child left behind doing well, a declining deficit, constantly growing stock market, reduced unemployment nation wide (less Michigan, pursued the war on terror with the seriousness it deserves, created new and stronger ties with a coalition of the willing and so much more). I say at least he has created some programs for consideration - not so much can be said for the other party. It's always easy to be the critic and much harder to be the creator.

Bush gets little credit for the positives as the drive by media and liberal voice is much louder, longer and shriller than the other side. There are certainly strong voices in the conservative corner on cable t.v., talk radio and in book form (Gingrich, Lay, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck, Ingraham, Malkin, Steyn, etc.). These people carry the torch alone for a party that has a weak beating heart, but it still palpitates now and then, so, there's hope!

I concede that there are few Rebulicans leaders in The House or Senate these days who are top notch conservatives and can lead the party with strength and determination. That's a big problem that needs to be addressed and very, very soon. Bush would be doing better in the public eye if he had a party with some back bone that could share the message loud and clear. They haven't been able to do that. One man and a few staffers can't carry the load alone. It's too heavy these days (as Nick pointed out examples of WTC bombing, Hurricane Katrina/Rita, wars on all fronts, mass illegal immigration, social security fund woes, etc).

Granted, Bush and his staff could be doing a much, much better job taking advantage of war powers they could have, but have chosen not to and to be better communicators on important issues. They get poor marks in this area for sure. It's their job to lay out the problem, define the solution and implement the program, but they have been lax many times in one or more of these areas. In the end though, I give kiddos for those who try versus those who do nothing, but impede progress.

The American people (less the coasts) seem to lean conservative in their morals, ethics and reasoning. They want strong leadership on most of the issues Bush has had to address. They don't want to start over, they just want to win in all things and need some fine tuning done to get there.

The BAD...The problem with many liberals - Whoopi Goldberg and the hollywood elite are prime examples - is that they make their decisions on people, events and things based upon how an issue "makes them feel". Although that has validity and no ones feelings should be discounted, it does have serious limitations.

While I would look to someone and get their opinion and thoughts and allow them to express their feelings on an issue...I would not use that same person or group to elevate policy making to the next level on anything of major consequence(ie how to run a war effort, how to balance a budget, how to fund national security, the schools, the retirement and medical funds, how to deal with the border and immigration issues etc). I would only leave serious program evaluation and development to those who have a grasp on history,
a clear view of the present and a vision for the future.

The liberals don't have that ability at this time (Clinton II, Edwards (The Breck Girl), or Mr. O).

The conservatives do but, need stronger direction to finish the job started (Rudy, Mitt, McCain, are you up to the challenge?? Hello...anybody?).

The UGLY...Negative thinking and negative feelings - dominate in today's Democratic and liberal party (I know this full well as I was a card carrying and proud (yikes!) member of the Dems for about twenty years until I saw the light about 6-7 years ago. Yes, I proudly entered the 12 Step Program To Leave The Democratic Party and have not looked back since.). Frankly a part of me realizes the Dems and liberals are in more control these days because it's simply a lot easier to be dark, morose, negative and non-visionary on things than it is to be upbeat, positive, optimistic, creative and be a chance taker.

It appears this trend of negativity and inability to understand things is just going to get worse as today's school kids (from middle school, high school, college and beyond) are learning less and less about the history of the United States and the world, reason and outcome of wars, military battles, policy making and current events. Without serious knowledge and background in these critical areas, the empty children of today will become the empty adults of tomorrow. They will have little to no ability to analyze, reason and create real life policies for us and the world. We will be lost in a sea of "feelings".

Knowledge (not just a view point) is critical, how easy we forget that.

I had a great boss tell me the following one day and I have never forgotten it...he said it to me one day at work when I was at a low point in my career, "Bridget, some managers and leaders do things right (most of us)....those who elevate themselves in history go beyond that...those managers and leaders know it's not how to do things right, but HOW TO DO THE RIGHT THING" (very few of us). I have never forgotten this - a powerful call to those handful of real leaders in a sea of 300 million strong.

Bush is striving for the latter even though he has made mistakes along the way. I give serious credit to those who persue the latter as it is a tough road, leaves one open to serious criticism and personal demonization, but it is the far more rewarding path over time if you have the courage and strength to stick it out.

Book Suggestions that tie in with the article:

For those interested in trying to wade through today's political scene...consider getting the book by Laura Ingraham - "Shut Up & Sing". It really is a bare books political bible that helps define who is a conserative, who is a liberal, what do each believe and why, what are each groups serious issues and what will each group be fighting to destroy or perserve for tomorrow. It really shows in a nutshell that American's don't truely love or hate Bush...we are really fighting and hating each other for all our differences. Bush gets to be the punching bag for each group.

For those interested in increasing their knowledge on why the war issue with Afghanistan and Iraq is NOT an isolated issue and will be critically important for decades to come, consider reading the books - Tony Blankley's "The West's Last Chance" and Mark Steyn's "America Alone".

They discuss in great detail the population declines of Western Europe, the rise of Muslim population and radical sects world wide, mass immigration with unchecked policies, over-burdened welfare states (medical, retirement, education etc) and weak officials not willing to prevent these downward trends. These books provide clarity to the reader on how we are all on a crash coarse for world destruction if we don't win this war on terror and radical Islam. Both books are eye opening reading for those who want to "understand the facts of this war", not just "feel things" about this war.

As one cable station advertised recently, America has problems, America is not THE problem. People who understand history and understand world events, know Bush is part of our solution, not part of the problem.

I didn't realize inmates in lunatic asylums had access to the internet. How do you type with your hands cuffed behind you? Is Bush the worst (most rotten) president in the history of the United States? Do hyenas shit in the woods? Let me put it in a way you can understand. Bush is the most corrupt leader of anything larger than a tailgate party in the history of the North and South American continents. I'm including lesser historical figures such as Poncho Villa, Machinegun Kelly, and the Birdman of Alcatraz. I hope you are able to be cured and when released find gainful employment.

Media is Anti-Bush (none / 0) (#6)

Wow, so much for meaningful discussion.

Congratulations to RightMichigan for being able to recruit a true-blue garden variety leftist.

The simple fact of the matter is, public opinion is greatly formed by media. It is typically here that we can get our news and keep track of the nation's pulse. When Cronkite told the world "that's the way it is" people believed him. Of course, it wasn't until later that Cronkite revealed his desire to form public opinion rather than inform the public. More recently this feigned objectivity isn't even a priority as networks march out self-declared leftists to do their work. Now, if the hard news cannot be spun to meet an agenda, the newsmedia creates the news itself through news manufacturing such as the 60-minutes Texas Air National Guard expose, or the dustup of Valerie Plame and her "outing" by White House operatives.

You give me Fox News...I give you CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, Hollywood, NYTimes, Washington Post, LA Times (among nearly all other major papers,) NPR, Time, Newsweek, etc. God help us all...even the Weather Channel has outed itself!

Should I be surprised that some bonehead comes on hear spouting leftist bile? He probably just has his television on or read the morning paper.

Anonymous Hero.. Who? What? Where? (none / 0) (#7)

Dear Anonymous Hero...

There is a very good reason you won't give your name when you write on sites such as this, you are willing to say nasty things, but you have no courage to be open about who you are when you say those things.

So, be anonymous. Readers are clear that with the words you speak and the things you think, it is important to remain anonymous. No one with any respect and dignity for themselves and others would come out openly and speak as you do. Your shame is understandable.

As for having hero in your name, I politely request you consider removing that section of your name. Your less than flattering and positive take on things makes it clear that you have done nothing to earn such a serious title.

Those who truely do heroic acts deserve that description:

fire fighters rescuing families from deadly fires

police officers answering buglaries, robberies, domestic abuse cases and murder scenes and trying to keep the peace

ambulance drivers answering calls of life and death 24 hours a day - rain, snow or shine

medical professionals saving lives in hospital rooms and emergency centers around this country every minute of every day

our military men and women standing strong and proud on nearly every continent of this world keeping the peace when they can and removing those who would kill us if we don't stand up for ourselves and others unable to do so

and finally, mothers and fathers who are hopefully raising raising the next generation of children who will treat the world and it's citizens with dignity, respect, kindness and an open mind even with those we disagree....children who hopefully, won't talk and think and act as you do to others.

Those are our everyday heros - they earn the title. You don't.

If you are capable of having a real discussion on serious issues, I'm sure your thoughts would be welcome. Otherwise, you are talking to the wind.
