Busy day at the shop here.. Two guys out right now and Monday is always a doozy anyhow.
Great content over the weekend. Generally, I prefer the comments part of any discussion, but Jenkuz, KG One, and Rougman lit it up to be sure. Looking back into history, there used to be an equivalent to this type of discourse. Usually it was held in the back of a tavern, or in a barn. Community leaders speaking up, and out, on a variety of issues affecting us. Even back then it may not have always been friendly. But it still happened. And it will still continue to happen here.. in this red barn of rightsidedness. Got a fun article coming up, but may not be done til a bit later.. In the meantime, the first Michigan related post I see goes Front page. By JGillman, Section News
Lets consider that when we elect our representation, we expect both adherence to rule of law, and to conservative principles that most who come here understand. Countless arguments exist about big tents, relaxing standards, or tolerance to "new ideas" in the Republican party in Michigan and elsewhere.
Our founders were quite prescient however as seen by the words of Madison on the conformity to "Republican" Principles going forward. From The federalist papers No. 39.
"The first question that offers itself is, whether the general form and aspect of the government be strictly republican. It is evident that no other form would be reconcilable with the genius of the people of America; with the fundamental principles of the Revolution; or with that honorable determination which animates every votary of freedom, to rest all our political experiments on the capacity of mankind for self-government. If the plan of the convention, therefore, be found to depart from the republican character, its advocates must abandon it as no longer defensible." Madison felt that Republican form of government served the people best, and to proceed with the convention sans IT being the premise of the new government, would be folly. The premise of the new government was as a Republic. The plan was to follow a set of limitations on government established by the constitution. It was NOT a "democracy." 39 is also a discussion of how we would have a mix of "national" and Federal" types of powers. But for this little peek into the past, lets pick off a small section.. You know, this is a unique place.
There are a number of varying opinions even within the Center-Right and conservative community. RightMichigan.com started Nearly 3 years ago as an alternative media site for conservative values and perhaps a touch of reality.. Nick put a lot into the site and posted daily as well as having other voices in the mix. Some respectful others not so much perhaps, but generally understood around here was the premise that our state has been getting ground into the turf through electoral generations of Democrats who are more beholding to union and "progressive" interests than those of the citizens of Michigan as a whole. Of course as we all know.. Nick's conspicuous absence leaves the regular postings that we had come to enjoy a little sparse. (2 comments, 466 words in story) Full Story |
