The significance of this holiday to the Civil Rights movement is not lost on me. In fact, I was born with it and a product of it. On this Martin Luther King Day, we reflect upon how the honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the defiance of the Establishment to change a culture of racism into one respecting human dignity through the Brotherhood of Man, preaching equality of opportunity, not outcomes. It led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I strongly urge you to do your own research on how this came about, but paying close attention to the "by whom" category. In light of the apparent support for Democrats by some 95% of the black community today, it matters who gets the credit.
