Merry Christmas
H/T Doug Sedenquist (1 comment) Comments >> By Conservative First, Section News
Christmastime for conservative activists brings lots of spam emails from GOP leaders in Michigan. These provide a curious sidebar in the "War on Christmas", the leftist effort to eliminate traditional symbols of Christmas as part of the broader culture war.
The chief symbol of the War on Christmas is the battle between the greetings "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays", with "Season's Greetings" making an occasional appearance. Of course, there wouldn't be "Holidays" without Christmas. The bizarre argument for using "Happy Holidays" is that some tiny fraction of the population would be offended by "Merry Christmas", so we must use a phrase that annoys far more people. (But they're the wrong people, so who cares are them?)
Two recent polls have shown that 69% and 77% of Americans prefer "Merry Christmas". The percentages of Republicans was 88% yet another poll. Yet some Republican leaders have taken a cowardly stand with the forces of political correctness rather than the vast majority of the Republican base. Here is a list of the greetings used by prominent Republicans who have mailed or emailed me.

It seems every time the good ol US of A comes up with a really great idea, it's value is seen by some as something to capitalize on, so that added regulatory measures and profit siphoning processes are added by government, tools of government, or users of government. And certainly, when we do something in this country, it is decidedly big enough that it has its process duplicated by those who think they can compete with us, and because of the siphoning, it usually isn't too hard.
As many know, I make my living wholesaling CCTV products that come from a variety of countries, but only a few from the US. I have a decent business relationship with overseas based firms that 30 years ago could not have been possible. I respect the ability to import, and I support the competitive nature even in the face of purposefully devalued foreign currency and living conditions. The opportunity for people to compete in some manner sometimes requires this, and what happened during our own industrial revolution now gives hope to even the poorest in nations that seemingly would not have ever had such happenings. Today is the day we celebrate the birth of the savior of all mankind. But there is a story with a strong pro-life message in the days before Jesus birth. God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth to Mary to inform her of the high honor of bearing Jesus, after which Mary, who at the time was a young teenager about 13 years of age and unmarried, fled to Judea for obvious reasons. She visited her relative Elizabeth who was 6 months pregnant with John the Baptist. From Luke 1 (NIV):
A few things in this segment. First, Mary was so early into the pregancy that Jesus couldn't have been more than what we refer to these days as a zygote. Note however that Elizabeth refers to Mary as a mother, way before she was to give birth. She even refers to her own unborn baby as a baby. Not a fetus or a lump of cells but a conscious baby no different in personhood than one born. And John the Baptists already had a special sensory perception that he recognized being in the presence of Jesus, who again was little more than a zygote at the time. In the biblical view, a zygote is no different than a fetus that is no different than a born baby. All are identified with the exact same greek word that translates into "baby." It is a lesson that we in the pro-life community know all too well, and one that the pro-abort community tries to bury at every chance.
But here's the chilling part of Mary's story in the context of today's pop culture, and one that should leave a shudder down the spine of any pro-abort that calls themselves Christian: if abortion were legal 2000 years ago, and Mary went on to have an abortion in Judea, what would she have aborted?
