Tag: Big 3 (page 2)By Nick, Section News
Remember a few months back when the Big 3 made their second appearance in Washington, DC, hat in hand begging for their lives (or at least the ability to maintain something relatively close to the status quo)?
There were those in Congress who stood up and lambasted the Detroit auots. They said that we here in Great Lakes State were out of step, that we didn't build cars people wanted and that a pair of uniquely Michigan companies didn't deserve the same sort of economic restart that had just been handed out in spades to the bad players in the banking and financial services industry. The response, especially from union members and Democrats was down right apoplectic. How DARE anyone question the Big 3? How dare those folks in Washington question Michigan manufacturers and blue collar workers? Especially after the Congress had just given so many billions to their friends who happened to hold their mortgages back at home. Frankly, a lot of those criticisms were spot-on accurate. Michigan did get a bum rap. The Big 3 hasn't coaxed nearly enough concessions out of Big Labor, but they're working on it (often without a good-faith partner in the form of UAW leadership, but that's not their fault). Similarly, our domestic automobile industry is leading the world right now in so-called "green vehicles," making fuel efficiency cool and affordable while pioneering battery technology for the first wave of gas-free autos. There was a glaring double-standard in the way different companies were being treated and the Washington insiders WERE picking on us like they hadn't picked on anyone else. Wait, did someone mention double-standards? Oh, right, that was me. Good point about double-standards, Nick! (You can't see me right now but if you could you'd see that I'm slapping my own back.) Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Michigan) has had a busy afternoon. He began by meeting with the GOP conference and President Obama and is this afternoon testifying before the Rules Committee but in between took a few minutes from his hectic schedule to speak exclusively with RightMichigan.com about a pair of amendments to the massive Obama stimulus package he submitted today. And we're not talking about run-of-the-mill process stuff here. Roger's proposals are dynamic, exciting and hold a heck of a lot of promise. So what are they all about? Interview follows: Read on... I've been thinking about if for a while but now I'm this close to doing it. Sure, the odds are against anything coming of the effort and I understand going in that it'd generate a lot of strange looks from Michigan Democrats and Republicans alike but if I got the job no one would ever be able to accuse the man of failing to think outside the box.
Ever since John Cherry told the Detroit Free Press that he was proud to run on the record he'd racked up along with Jennifer Granholm in maybe the most catastrophic administrative run in any state government's history, nationwide, I've seen opportunities everywhere. Not opportunities for economic stimulus or recovery or anything as high minded as that. Opportunities to highlight the record Cherry defends as "strong." That's why I'm seriously considering sending my resume to the Cherry for Governor folks and applying to become the Lieutenant Governor's press secretary for the 2010 campaign cycle. Governor Jennifer Granholm has "laid a strong groundwork for the state's future, and he'll be happy to run on the Democratic governor's record," he told the Ivory Tower the week before last. I take the man at his word. Now take me at mine... no one in the state of Michigan would be happier over the next two years to point out the Granholm-Cherry administration's record than me. See? Perfect fit. It'd be a match made in fever-dream-heaven. Let's be honest... here at Right Michigan we've sort of been doing the job these last few years anyways. Might as well make it official. I can start today! And since many interview processes include a skill assessment I'll give the Cherry team a taste of what they can expect right here right now. Read on...
