Cherry claims pride in Granholm record; McSame all over again

    "I think she's got a strong record."

--Lieutenant Governor John Cherry, Detroit Free Press, January 14, 2009

Governor Jennifer Granholm has "laid a strong groundwork for the state's future, and he'll be happy to run on the Democratic governor's record," according to this morning's Ivory Tower.

Remember when John McCain stood in front of the camera and reminded folks that he voted with the President 92 percent of the time?  And that now infamous line about how "the fundamentals of our economy are strong?"  Yeah, déjà vu.  I guess those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it.

But hey, if John Cherry wants to run on the Governor's record that's fine by me.  And, frankly, whether he wants to or not, he's going to have to.  The man is, after all, her "right hand man."

In other words, he was first-mate while she captained the ship into this gully-whomper of a single state storm.

We know the job loss numbers upside down and backwards.  Nearly 400,000 fewer net jobs in Michigan since Cherry took the oath of office in January 2003 while the nation added nearly 8 million (even after factoring in the current headline making national job losses).  Numbers are easy.  It's the human factor that's much more difficult to talk about.

How do you quantify family hardship?  What kind of data points can you use to adequately convey the tragic, life shaking moments so many thousands of Michigan moms and dads and their kids have had to endure while the current administration fortified their big-government castle in downtown Lansing?

Cherry's record isn't just the massive deficits, the great lakes sized wells of red ink and the hundreds of thousands of outsourced Michigan jobs, its also places like the Academy of the Americas in Detroit, a public school that earlier this week had to send out a public appeal for toilet paper and light bulbs.  Because apparently THAT'S something he can be proud of.

    Read on...

(Good news on that front, by the way... AoA hasn't fixed their financial mess but some awesome people in the private sector have come together and purchased the supplies the school needs to maintain cleanliness and sanitation.  Detroit News has details.)

Listening to John Cherry speak about his job performance and that of his boss sort of boggles the mind.  How does he read reports like those released this week by the Michigan League of Human Services that found staggering rates of child poverty and skyrocketing welfare rates and not realize the harm that's been done?  I think he does.  He must.  By all accounts he's a man of at least average intelligence.  I don't know the guy but I'd assume he hasn't lost all humanity.

I defy him or anyone else with a head and a heart to read a story like the one in today's Macomb Daily without wincing over the pain so many more kids are being forced to endure.

Like the rest of the state, however, many more Macomb children are living in poverty compared to seven years ago, significantly contributing to the demand for emergency resources, such as federal food assistance -- which more than tripled between 2000 and 2007 from 4.7 to 15.4 percent of children requiring such assistance.

Similarly, the demand for foster care jumped a whopping 35 percent over that same time period, said Sue Javid, early childhood specialist for the Macomb Intermediate School District.

"We know that because of the economic situation things are going to get worse," said Javid, explaining that while Macomb's rate is well below the state average, the local increase reflects a statewide trend.

The number of Macomb County kids seeking emergency resources has tripled under John Cherry's watch.  And the numbers across the state... some of them aren't that pretty.

Give them a gander.  Or just meditate on the shocking concept that our child poverty rates have tripled in less than a decade under Democratic leadership.

    "I think she's got a strong record."

Governor Jennifer Granholm has "laid a strong groundwork for the state's future, and he'll be happy to run on the Democratic governor's record."

I admitted my faith in his intelligence and assumption that John Cherry has a heart.  Maybe I spoke too soon.

coming to aid of a school.  I thought companies and capitalists were greedy, evil, heartless people.

Once again the private sector steps in and does what the public sector cannot do.

    God help us!
