Tell me again why we "need" a gas tax hike, Gov. Snyder?By KG One, Section News
Despite the overwhelming lack of support from Michigan Motorists, Michigan Legislators (unless your name happens to be either Wayne Schmidt or Roger Kahn), and anyone else not associated with MITA, the word on the street is that just like the Energizer Bunny, Gov. Snyder is still going and going at it behind the scenes trying to get another one of his tax hikes approved.
This is coming from a man who loves to make local units of government jump through hoops to get money from the state. He'll require graphs, charts, metrics, notarized forms signed in triplicate and your mother's maiden name before even considering appropriating any money. Unfortunately, he still won't hold himself to the very same standard that he requires of others. Why is that?

Well, the answer should be obvious: The "need" just isn't there.
I've written several times before about how unnecessary ANY additional revenue is when it comes to fixing Michigan Roads. Others, like the good people at Americans for Prosperity Michigan and the Mackinac Center have also written about it as well. The necessary funding (well, more actually), is already there. It's just a matter of showing some leadership and being able to prioritize your spending. Michigan Households have been doing this, mostly out of necessity, for years now. The problem here is that showing that leadership is difficult. And people might not be very happy once when they find out that their taxes aren't being used for the purposes that they originally thought they were. For example; that park down the street or pike path that you've passed on your way to work? There's a good chance that it was paid for or supported by money collected for the federal gas tax. That large empty bus you've just passed sitting by the side of the road picking up someone riding a 10-speed bike. That's partially supported by the Michigan Gas Tax you are paying while you are filling up at the corner gas station. How about other little "taxes" hidden in the price of a gallon of gas? Well, this one is sure to give Gov. Snyder-r, Rep. Schmidt-r, Sen. Kahn-r, and MITA another excuse to reach for a bottle of Maalox. When you break down what you pay at the pump, one of those taxes is for something called a MUSTFA tax. Enacted in 1988, MUSTFA stands for Michigan Underground Storage Tank Financial Assurance, and is ostensibly used for the cleanup of the areas around leaking tanks at gas stations. Just recently, the Michigan Auditor General released a report citing the fact that Lansing has not been using the money collected in taxes for its stated purpose, but rather for paying down unrelated bond programs and for air quality projects at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Since 2004, at least $180-million has been spent areas other that what was originally intended. Oops!
So, please tell me again, Gov. Snyder why you "need" more revenue?
