A website was recently launched, asking the question, "Why is Debbie Stabenow the Worst Senator?" Plenty of response to this, so I'm told, and many people voicing their opinion as to why, according to them, Debbie The Dangerously Incompetent needs to go (upward of 13,000 replies to date, if I'm informed correctly). Though I don't have that list handy, I did converse with a few Michigan tea partiers and review the responses on Pete Hoekstra's campaign FaceBook page. The distilled feedback that I have follows the break.
Of the 33 U. S. Senate seats that are up for re-election this year (the Class 1 seats), 17 of them are sitting somewhere between "vulnerable" and "likely to flip" as of about a week ago. Of those seventeen seats, 12 are currently held by democrats (or an Independent caucusing with the democrats, in the case of Joe Lieberman). Let me provide you with a quick word picture of how this breaks down.
The U. S. Senate Class 1 Seats, currently held by Republicans, which may be flipped, are 5 in total:
Likely to flip:
* Maine (Olympia Snowe retiring - Chuck Summers defending)
Leaning flip:
* [none]
Toss up:
* Massachusetts (Scott Brown standing for re-election)
Vulnerable:
Arizona (Jon Kyl retiring - Jeff Flake defending)
Indiana (Dick Lugar primaried - Richard Mourdock defending)
Nevada (Dean Heller standing for re-election)
The U. S. Senate Class 1 Seats, currently held by Democrats, which may be flipped, are 12 in total:
Likely to flip:
* Nebraska (Ben Nelson retiring - Bob Kerrey defending)
Leaning flip:
* [none]
Toss up:
Montana (Jon Tester standing for re-election)
North Dakota (Kent Conrad retiring - Heidi Heitkamp defending)
Virginia (Jim Webb retiring - Tim Kaine defending)
Connecticut (Joe Lieberman retiring - Chris Murphy defending)
Florida (Bill Nelson standing for re-election)
Hawaii (Daniel Akaka retiring - Mazie Hirono defending)
Michigan (Debbie Stabenow standing for re-election)
Missouri (Claire McCaskill standing for re-election)
New Mexico (Jeff Bingaman retiring - Martin Heinrich defending)
Ohio (Sherrod Brown standing for re-election)
Now, after looking at the numbers in some detail, I think it's fair to say that, of those 12 vulnerable democrats, Michigan's Junior Senator (Do Nothing Debbie) is the least vulnerable. Nevertheless, "least vulnerable of the vulnerable" is still vulnerable, and I'm getting the impression that all but the hard-core socialist-democrats in this state want her pink-slipped this coming November. Some argue that, of the vulnerable democrats, the Michigan Meat Puppet is actually the worst of the lot. Why would they say that Debbie Stabenow is the worst senator? Let's see if any of these ring a bell:
According to the bio available on her Wikipedia page, Debbie Stabenow's entire adult life has been spent either as a college student or as an elected legislator. She has no private sector experience worth discussing, if indeed any at all.
CBO made it official earlier this year that America has had four consecutive trillion dollar deficits . . . on Obama's watch. As a member of the Senate Budget Committee, Debbie Stabenow has done nothing to stop the reckless spending. Worse, Senator Do-nothing sits on a budget committee that hasn't actually produced, or concurred with, a budget since April 9th, 2009 . . . 1,258 days as of today.
One of the comments I read was from a lady who once spoke with Debbie's mother (Anna Greer) at church. Responding to a question about how she felt with regard to Deb's stance on abortion, Mrs. Greer said that she was disappointed with the stand that her daughter took. In April of 2000, the high priestess of Molech voted NO on banning partial-birth abortions. In July of 2006, she voted NO on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions. In April of 2007, she voted YES on expanding research to more embryonic stem cell lines, supporting the harvesting of children for scientific experimentation. In October of 2007, she voted NO on barring HHS grants to organizations that perform abortions.
Stabenow is a big fan of the DREAM Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants without bothering to enforce consequences for criminal activity or even requiring them to prove that they can be useful and productive members of society. In May of 2006, she voted YES on allowing illegal aliens to participate in the Social Security system. In June of 2007, she voted NO on declaring English as the official language of the U. S. government.
Debbie is also a big fan of the Fairness Doctrine. Evidently, she is of the mindset that the federal government, not the free market, should be deciding what gets to receive how much airtime on talk radio. But free speech itself doesn't seem to be something she supports. If you post anything on her office or campaign FaceBook pages (whether asking a question or providing a response) that is counter to her political philosophy, not only will her staff take down your post, they'll also block you. William F. Buckley, jr., had it right when he said that though liberals do a great deal of talking about giving a hearing to other points of view, it sometimes shocks and offends them to learn that there actually are other points of view.
Neither Senator Stabenow nor her office staff are particularly cooperative or honest, and have a reputation for being quite patronizing toward those with whom they disagree. One tea partier told me about a time that she wrote to express an opinion and ask an honest question; the very sarcastic reply carefully explained in detail why the opinion didn't matter, and why the question wasn't relevant. More common is the occurrence when Stabenow replies with a form letter response that doesn't directly answer the question or address the subject, and is couched in language that comes across as a campaign puff piece (even during non-election years).
Perhaps because she's way too sensitive to global warming when she flies, Stabenow has a history of voting for legislation that will drive up energy prices. In both March of 2003 and March of 2005, she voted against domestic energy production in a small remote coastal area in ANWR. In October of 2006, she authored a ban on Great Lakes drilling. In June of 2008, she voted for the Warner-Lieberman climate tax bill (estimated to increase electricity prices up to 50 percent, and cost Michigan up to both 120,000 jobs and $20.9 billion in gross state product by 2030). In March of 2009, she voted to make the tax deduction permanent for conservation easements, but one month later, voted NO on protecting middle-income taxpayers from a national energy tax. In April of 2011, she voted NO on barring EPA from regulating greenhouse gases. In March of 2012, she voted against the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. In June of 2012, she voted for the Utility MACT rule and the Cross State Air Pollution rule, which are estimated to cost the country about $10 billion per year, require the shuttering of 32 power plants in 12 states, and place at risk an additional 36 plants in an additional 16 states.
Not content with simply voting to screw over the common citizens via their utility bill, she's also decided to endorse the Michigan Renewable Energy Amendment (aka Proposal 12-3). Never you mind that there are trade union leaders and elected leadership within the Michigan Jackass Party who have very real concerns with the 25-by-25 proposal, Stabusnow is quite happy incorporating UN Agenda 21 planks into the state party's platform. At least she'll have Saul to keep her company. Oh, and when sent letters opposing wind energy subsidies, she replied with letters thanking the writers for their support of her position!
Stabenow's Second Amendment record isn't all that impressive, either. In March of 2004 and July of 2005, she voted NO on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers for gun violence. No word, so far as I'm aware, on her position on whether or not grocery stores can be sued for obesity. Oh, and back in June of 1999, she voted NO on decreasing the gun waiting period from 3 days to 1, something that Pete Hoekstra supported and voted for.
Debbie is also a pawn of the unions. Between ObamaCare, Cap-and-Trade, excessive regulations, and campaigning for higher taxes on small businesses, the only job Stabenow is getting done for Michigan families, manufacturers, and small businesses is a screw job. In October of 2006, she was on the record as saying, "Health coverage needs to be a right, not a privilege," and never mind how that actually affects businesses and employers. In February of 2008, she voted NO on raising the Death Tax exemption from $1M to $5M, which put the screws to farming families and small businesses. In November of 2008, she voted YES on extending unemployment benefits from 39 weeks to 59 weeks. In January of 2009, she supported stronger enforcement against gender-based pay discrimination, advocating for greater government control over private businesses. In March of 2009, she supported formation of unions by card-check instead of secret ballot.
Like any socialist-democrat, Stabenow seems eager to punch as many holes as possible into the U. S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. In April of 2001, she advocated for more funding and stricter sentencing for hate crime enforcement, thus undermining the First Amendment. In February of 2009, she voted YES on providing a U. S. House seat for the District of Columbia. In March of 2009, she voted YES on instituting National Service (Obama's Army) as a new social invention. And in July of 2009, even though she's not willing to vote for a budget, she voted YES on an immediate Congressional pay raise.
I'm sure that there are plenty of other examples available, but these eleven are, I figure, a good starting point. Feel free to add your own thoughts in the commentary, or go to Worst Senator and add them there.
