Predictable Party Of Michigan Chooses Closed Primary

Because they are afraid of a Cain, a Palin, a Perry, Bachmann, or heaven forbid Ron Paul. The pre-ordained method of supporting a milquetoast Romney for Michigan's selection has been made official.

LANSING - Michigan Republicans will participate in a closed primary next year to select the GOP Presidential nominee, state party chairman Bobby Schostak said, following the party's vote at its State Committee meeting on Saturday.

"Saturday's vote by our State Committee was the culmination of months of communication between our grassroots, activists, policy committee members, statewide GOP supporters, and everyone with an interest in ensuring that Michigan sends a Republican president to the White House in 2012," Schostak said.

In May, the policy committee was tasked with researching facts and gathering opinions about which process Republicans should use to choose the nominee. On July 12, the policy committee recommended that the State Committee adopt a closed primary.

"President Barack Obama's policies have done tremendous harm to the economy," Schostak said. "Michigan voters have painfully endured the results of a federal government that tries to be all things to all people. We need jobs, not empty, feel-good rhetoric. And today's vote finally gives Michigan voters the chance to send a Republican to the White House."

Let the Democrat operation chaos begin.  Now all those lefties who have no primary can jump on over and destroy the health care mandate debate by helping us nominate someone who's contrast of idea possibility is destroyed by that which he has already done.

Bad play Republican policy folks.  You continue to pretend that a moderate can beat this guy. The moderate's inability to clearly define what they stand for muddies the differences.  Remember McCain in the debates trying to out socialize housing? Yeah like that.

What might Romney say when his Mass Health care boondoggle is challenged as being the same?  we know he has used the 10th argument, but where else has he enforced that belief?

    Nowhere.  Then he is done.

    . . . Saul Anuzis' facebook page:

MIGOP: proposed 2012 presidential rules pass 92-17. Closed presidential primary to be held between Feb 28 - March 6. ... Closed Primary in Michigan guarantees maximum participation by presidential candidates and grassroots activists. A win/win!

As I said elsewhere: unless we hold that primary on February 28th, the legislature is going to have to authorize a $10 million special appropriation; and if we hold it before March 6th, then the RNC is going to halve our representation at the national convention.  So, which of the two evils do we now pick?

As I also said, one of the key disadvantages of a primary is that it doesn't require any special organizational efforts by candidates.  Advertising, yes; organizing, not so much.  Another key disadvantage is that we're now wide open to a Mark Brewer-led, MDP-coordinated contamination of our primary.  That crossover will serve to support the nomination of either (a) the candidate on the ballot who most closely reflects democrat values and goals, or (b) the candidate on the ballot who is perceived as being easiest for Obama to beat in November.

Just because we now have a date and method locked in by the State Committee doesn't mean that the candidates will be making more frequent stops in Michigan.  They may do that as a result of us now hosting a presidential debate in a few months, but I don't think that locking in a date and a nomination method is what will drive the activity.

Einstein-Hopper Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again, because that's the way we've always done it, and expecting that the results will somehow be different this time around.  This decision, in my opinion, seems to be a classic example of that logic in play.

The Bolshevicks in the south-east corner won't be crossing over to vote in our primaries. The results of that have been idiots like McCain and the Turd, Ricky the Rino. No more of that. I for one am damned sick and tired of the Party of Marx picking our candidates. Hopefully Michigan's example will encourage other states with the same problem to follow suit to exclude the Uber-lefties from voting in anything but their own primaires. This is a good move and will go far to improve the chances of conservative candiates in Michigan elections. And it is about damned time.

Let's call it what it is, an open primary (none / 0) (#3)

I think state committee is highly overestimating crossover votes. I expect a 20% crossover similar to 2000. Why? The dems are having a caucus. There's only one contest. Ours.

This is the MI-GOP we're talking about after all.

    Game over.

Another key disadvantage is that we're now wide open to a Mark Brewer-led, MDP-coordinated contamination of our primary.

Not directed at you personally, KRH, but Brewer never had to lift a finger to watch the MI-GOP implode.

I just caught Mark Brewer on Skubick's Off The Record show. He came right out and said, essentially, that the Republicans were idiots to put the presidential primary on the same day as the legislator recalls. There would be lots of motivated Democrats out to vote that day, and once they were there in the voting booth, what do you think they're going to do?
    I haven't found a transcript. Here's the video:

Yes. The meme about the Stupid Party never stops being proved right.

At this point, it looks like the only thing to do is start organizing right now to have a Murkowski-style write in campaign ready for November 2012. The establishment Republicans proved it can be done, so now it's time to use their own lesson against them. They'll claim that conservatives owe them loyalty, but there sure isn't any in the other direction. You can't fix the Democrat problem until you fix the Republican problem.
