Leeches know no boundaries.
In party stores and what passes for grocery stores in and around Detroit, people have been selling their food stamps for pennies on the dollar for as long as I can remember. There really wasn't much you could do back then. It's not as if there was anyone to call (and being on a somewhat-regular route), it wasn't advisable to draw too much attention to yourself by eying the locals buying habits. In come the leeches, out they go with a bottle of MD 20/20, Wild Turkey, or even a 40. Fast-forward to today... [Story continues below the fold)
The leeches are still selling their food stamps.
Only now instead of selling actual food stamps, our humane and benevolent government issues electronic debit cards which, according to the state, "Are an innovative vehicle to delivering government benefits by combining the best of electronic technologies." (Read: Good luck trying to sell these gov't bennies.) I'm sure that everyone has by now saw the story posted by grannynanny last month, which pretty much ticked off everyone in the producing-class. It involved some leech going into a market in Menominee and buying a lot of stuff that we could not afford to normally purchase, but these leeches did so on the public dime.
Well fortunately, this story actually ends on a happy note. Embarrassed at what a dysfunctional charlie-foster the Michigan DHS has degenerated into, someone finally got off of their sorry complacency and looked into this case. Lo and behold, they actually found something to act upon. Thanks to the efforts of the Department of Human Services' Office of Inspector General and the Menominee County Sheriff's Department, it was determined that some funny business was going on and arrested one Louis Wayne Cuff for food stamp trafficking. Buying high-end foodstuffs with food stamps is perfectly okay according to the gov't. Turning around and selling those same items for pennies on the dollar isn't.
"Cuff's attorney, Randall Phillips of Menominee, declined to comment Tuesday, adding that he would advise his client to do the same. Psssst! Mr. Rooney? Here are some more leads of waste and abuse for you to prosecute. Your own agents advocating putting something potentially deadly into a child you forcibly took away from her mother. Those agents need some quality time in Level 4 lockup to reflect upon their actions. After you're done with putting kids in danger, you could save Michigan Taxpayers a few bucks here. And I'll go out on a bit of a limb and predict that the other posters here will chime in with more examples of DHS waste and abuse for you to address in the future.
