Fall 2011 State of the State Survey conducted by IPPSR at MSU results can be found here.

    A few interesting Republican stats:

44.2% believe they are worse off than one year ago.

32.3% remain stuck on Snyder loving Party stupid.

    Amazing.

...against the things Snyder has done (raise taxes just like Granholm), and hasn't done (take over the City of Detroit and throw anyone in political office in jail for gross malfeasance), just how long do you think it will take the MI-GOP to realize that they've just handed everything in Lansing over to the democrats on a silver platter?

the guy at MSU who did the survey, charles ballard, is a tool of the left.

the guy in Lansing who wooed Democrats in the primary, rick snyder, is a big government crony capitalist tool of the center-left.

The MSU Survey should frighten the bejesus out of the majority in the legislature and SCOMI.

...the best answer that we can get from anyone in the MI-GOP that someone is a tool.

I've yet to hear a solid answer on why Michigan republicans were willing accomplices on the multiple tax hikes sought by (and granted) to the guv.

I guess that part about "practicing fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn" only makes for good copy. Actually putting it into practice is just too darn hard to really do.

On why they have been strangely silently on the expansion of state government (i.e. mandating of autism coverage, collection of health data from residents, requirement of personal information before purchasing an OTC product and my personal fav implementing the Obamacare exchange)?

I can only surmise that whole "The best government is that which governs least," is for those who only look at party affiliations at election time, and not at their actual voting record.

Or why they haven't been more vocal about a republican governor who is more than willing to use taxpayer dollars to directly compete against a Michigan Businessman?

Free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative? Is that only when it doesn't run counter to the goals of the party standard bearer?

I'd love to get a straight answer to all of the above!

From a March 16, 2011 CityPulse column by Charles L. Ballard:

    ......

"I believe we have reduced taxes too far. Tax cuts are popular politically, but tax cuts by themselves are not an effective economic strategy. If reduced taxes were the key to prosperity, Michigan's economy would be booming.

No one enjoys paying taxes, but taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society."

    .....

"If we want to support education adequately, the resources are there. All we have to do is reinstate some of the tax revenues we used to collect."

    .....

"I commend Governor Snyder for avoiding the extreme anti-worker policies and rhetoric of Wisconsin's Governor Walker."

    .....

"Michigan is one of only seven states with a flat-rate income tax. Most states have a graduated income tax, with higher rates on those with higher incomes.

I believe we should have a graduated income tax in Michigan. However, a graduated income tax would require a constitutional amendment, so it is unlikely to occur soon.

In the meantime, we could raise the flat rate of the current income tax. Michigan's rate is 4.35 percent. If we increase the rate to 5 percent, we would collect an additional $1 billion per year of tax revenue."

    .....

Charles Ballard has been on the Economics Department faculty at Michigan State University since 1983, when he received his Ph.D. from Stanford University. In 2007, he became director of the State of the State Survey in MSU's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research. Also in 2007, he won the Outstanding Teacher Award in MSU's College of Social Science. In 2011, he joined the board of directors of the Michigan League for Human Services. He has served as a consultant with the U.S. departments of Agriculture, Health & Human Services, and Treasury, and with research institutes in Australia, Denmark, and Finland. His books include "Michigan at the Millennium" and "Michigan's Economic Future."

    Misleading Methodology (none / 0) (#10)
by Conservative First on Tue Dec 06, 2011 at 01:51:27 PM EST
The survey uses misleading methodology.  Snyder is rated on a excellent/good/fair/poor scale.  However, those who answer excellent or good are counted as approving, while those who say fair or poor are counted as disapproving.  However, a decent number of the 42% who say 'fair' would probably approve if pressed.  Snyder's approval may not be great, but it is nowhere near 20%.
