Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

Weaver Sticks it to the Republicans.

She wasn't going to be nominated by the Republicans at the convention as in years past.  She WAS going to legitimately compete as an independent.

And now..  Betty Weaver has given a solid middle finger to the Republican party which supported her past ascension to the Michigan Supreme court. Weaver, who had filed as an Independent has apparently decided to forgo the cost of the race, and give a payback to the Republican party of Michigan that said it wouldn't nominate her as a result of her frequently siding with the more liberal justices too often..  She is quitting the bench.

Liz Boyd, spokeswoman for Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, said Weaver, 69, would formally tender her resignation later in the morning and appear with the governor at a news event at noon.

The governor will appoint a replacement, and that action doesn't require the approval of the state Legislature, Boyd said.

And she is giving the valuable title of "incumbent" to whomever Jennifer Granholm puts in her place.  It is a gift to the Ds, a snub to the Rs, and a position that requires no confirmation from the legislature apparently.

    wow.

    More Electioneering... (none / 0) (#1)

Makes you wonder that when Weaver knew that the Republicans would never re-nominate her, whether this was the plan all along.  Launch an independent bid (with the Dems supporting her) to wait until the last minute before the conventions and then pull out so that Dems can insert who ever they want into the ballot with designation.

Its amazing all the damange that Justice Weaver is willing to inflict on our state due to the fact that she wasn't selected to be Chief Justice way back when.

another Mark Brewer idea.  Since his fake tea party has been exposed he will do whatever it takes to promote the liberal agenda.

And I am discouraged by the judicial system anyway.  I do not believe there are any conservative judges left here or in the US period.

    Article 6, Section 23 . . . (none / 0) (#5)
by Kevin Rex Heine on Thu Aug 26, 2010 at 12:54:15 PM EST
. . . of the Michigan Constitution applies:

Sec 23:  Judicial vacancies, filling; appointee, term; successor; new offices.

A vacancy shall occur in the office of judge of any court of record or in the district court by death, removal, resignation or vacating of the office, and such vacancy shall be filled by appointment by the governor. The person appointed by the governor shall hold office until 12 noon of the first day of January next succeeding the first general election held after the vacancy occurs, at which election a successor shall be elected for the remainder of the unexpired term. Whenever a new office of judge in a court of record, or the district court, is created by law, it shall be filled by election as provided by law. The supreme court may authorize persons who have been elected and served as judges to perform judicial duties for limited periods or specific assignments.

So it seems that, due to a constitutional lack of provision with respect to Senate confirmation of a Gubernatorial appointment, Justice Weaver and Governor Granholm set up a situation wherein the Democrat Party gets to throw their own "incumbent" onto the general ballot . . . likely from Jenny's own donor list.  I don't know whom the MDP was planning on running this year, or even if they had targeted both seats, but the reality of the matter is that neither of their choices would have had the advantages that come with incumbency.  Now, one will.

And yeah, don't think for one second that this wasn't planned out well in advance.

As a Republican and someone who has supported Justice Weaver ...and even considered her a friend...I feel betrayed.

This blatantly political ploy will leave her a less than honorable legacy...very sad...and devastating for Michigan.

Hopefully, this will backfire with the voters who will see through this cheap political maneuver.

She is what I thought she was (none / 0) (#10)

Paraphrasing former Arizona coach Dennis Green's infamous remark on the Bears. She is what I thought she was.

Ms. Weaver is an individual who puts her personal biases and petty office politics ahead of the law. This does not surprise me in the least.

I highly regret this vote from 2002. It was a last minute nose holding decision and blunder we all should have seen. Hindsight is 20/20. I screwed up in my vote.

After reading more of the decisions and her dissents and/or concurrences, reasonings, and comments on the court decisions, I've decided that I'd vote for even Justice Cavanaugh over Weaver if I had to pick between the two today. At least Cavanaugh can make legal arguments. It's for the same reason that I can respect Stevens or Ginsburg, but not Souter or O'Conner. Lightweights.

We need to make sure we go all in for BOTH Justice Young and the other nominee, whether it be Judge Mary Beth Kelly or Judge Jane Markey. I didn't see anything done for Zahra or Shulman, and I saw little done for Justice Taylor in the last race. The Chamber of Commerce can't do anything, and what good will it do if the GOP takes the legislature and governorship, and loses everything because of the courts reversing 15 years of progress.

    Weaver is a traitor. (none / 0) (#11)

Weaver horse traded her Supreme Court seat to the dems, pure and simple.

Assuming Davis (aided by his incumbency designation)wins reelection, we will have four solid liberals on the bench.

    Good luck with reapportionment.
