Senator Jason Allen has sponsored a bill that unionized home help care workers.    He got trounced by the grassroots, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, his Republican opponents who are running for U.S. House of Representatives in Michigan's First District, and the tea party movement.

So, after defending the bill, SB 731, numerous times, The Senior Citizens and Veteran Affairs Committee approved a change in language to the bill this past Thursday to make sure that the initial bill would not unionize home care workers.

His office issued a press release titled,  "Bill provides home help workers safeguards."  It describes his insertion of language into the bill he sponsored and defended to make sure forced unionization would not happen.

So, while this language insertion corrects his bill, it amplifies the fact that he is not a principled conservative.

Last December, Jack McHugh, of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy pointed out:

Made a slight correction in the paragraph...The Senior Citizens and Veteran Affairs Committee approved a change in language to the bill made by Allen this past Thursday to make sure that the initial bill would not unionize home care workers.  Even though Allen defended the bill numerous times, his office...

Another correction should be made as well.. (none / 0) (#2)

    You said:
"Senator Jason Allen has sponsored a bill that unionized home help care workers.  "

Actually, it did not.  At least according to Allen it was not the intent.  However, unknowable to Allen originally, it apparently provided cover for the fact they were already using the state as collectors for union dues.

Now that he has corrected the mistake, you cannot accept him at his word, that his original intent was not what you say.  He HAS provided a reasonable explanation of what he wanted to do for the safety of seniors.  While you or I may think there are better free market ways to guarantee that safety than what was in the original bill, he seems to have modified it even further to make some of THOSE measures voluntary..

Bottom line is, he may have made a mistake.  We all do. It could even be argued that your recent assertion of his interest in the bridge issue was what I would consider a mistake.  It happens.  He did what he could to correct this.  In fact, it looks like he listened to a great number of folks like yourself, (I'll bet what you say matters) and made some necessary adjustments.

Wow..I wish we had more representatives who listened to the people like that!!  [Wink..]
