Goodbye Bart - Breaking! - Updated

Its official.  Stupak is announcing today, that he will not seek re-election to the 1st congressional district.  Fox reports:
"Michigan Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, who was the central figure in the abortion debate surrounding the health care law, will retire from Congress at the end of this term.

Stupak, who's been in Congress for 18 years, will make the announcement at a 12:30 p.m. ET press conference in Marquette, Mich."

Stupak claims all the hubbub surrounding his vote was not the reason..

    OK.. no matter.

The bottom line, is that Stupak represented his district well enough for most of his time spent to be re-elected for 8 terms.  He is a decent man who has different priorities than those of us on the right. But he has been someone who stood up for gun rights, and really up until the recent congress, has had a reasonable representative on the other side.

His recent vote however, revealed much in how the left has hijacked the Democrat institution, and how his brand of politics are probably not welcome here any longer.  A recent exchange with one of his friends reveals a underpinning of pressure placed on him prior to the Health Care vote.  He insisted he "was screwed."

We all were Bart.  And you didn't have to vote that way.

I personally wish you and your family well, while at the same time am thankful you have decided to call it quits.

UPDATE - The Michigan GOP adds this:

LANSING – Bart Stupak plans to announce Friday he will not seek re-election to Congress following his vote to support the massive government takeover of healthcare.

“Bart Stupak is the first casualty of the Obamacare vote,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser. “Caving to pressure from Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi, Stupak ignored his district and betrayed his principles. His vote for the massive government take-over of healthcare proved to be toxic. Stupak sold out, now he’s paying the price.

“Rather than face certain defeat in November, Stupak decided to retire despite pressure from the Democrat establishment, including a personal call from the president.”

Stupak was a key vote in securing the needed support to pass the Democrats’ healthcare takeover, bringing other so-called “pro-life” Democrats with him.

“This should serve as notice for Gary Peters, Mark Schauer and other out-of-touch Democrats in Lansing and Washington: ignore the people, take away our liberties and mortgage our future with a ballooning federal debt and pay the price,” Weiser said.

That Bart the Baby Butcher reads this blog. It is pretty apparent that he must listen to the plain folk that inhabit this space from time to time. I hope that Bart is picking out his hovel eh, ah, condo in Cuba. He better get there quick as more of his colleagues will be rushing to get there as well. Well, Bart, gosh darn it. Sure would like to say it has been a pleasure but I can't because it hasn't. Good riddance. May you never, ever impose yourself on the good people of this state ever again.

I've done my fair share of Bart bashing over the past couple of years.  I have to say too that I'm not sorry to see him go.  I'm sure he is a fine family man and a guy who will make a good living either suing the crap out of employers in his home district or lobbying for those same businesses in either Lansing or Washington...whichever pays more.

That aside, I think Bart is doing the right thing by resigning at this point in his career.  He has been in the Congress for eighteen years and it is time for him to move on regardless of whatever the stances in his storied political career might have been.

Eighteen years is a long time to represent the people in one job.  I wish that people like John Dingell, John Conyers, John McCain, Robert Byrd, Arlen Specter, and anyone with the last name of Levin would follow Bart's example.

Even though I am no longer in his district I am thrilled he decided to jump off the sinking ship.  But as a liberal/socialist democrap you just know he is going to land some sort job in this administration.  Probably in HHS. I cringe at the thought of my taxpayer dollars paying him any further salary to infringe on my personal freedoms and spending money like it's free Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer on a hot yooper day.

    I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet. (none / 0) (#4)

And Mr. Weiser is not looking long term, why stop with Gary Peters or Mark Schauer?

Sander Levin is in for a runoff election this August.

Can another Geoffrey Fieger/Larry Owen/Doug Ross-ish race be in the future this August?

Personally, I am unable to wish Bart well.  I hope all his sh!ts from this moment on are square.  He's been a fraud, a liar and a commie for years.

Yet, District-1 kept reelecting him...  Nine-F'ing-Terms.

This is gonna creat a lot of confusion. (none / 0) (#6)

The "staunch" Republicans in his district who proclaim knowingly each election, "I always vote for Bart Stupak, he seems like he knows what he's doing" are gonna have a hard time deciding which democrap to vote for in the primary--need one that seems like she knows what she's doing.

. . . I'm camped out at my parents' house (Oscoda, Michigan) this weekend.  Got word that none other than Joel Sheltrown is entering the District 1 race on the Democrat side of the ticket.

    For what that's worth.
