Dingells Last Stand?By JGillman, Section News
Tomorrow is a big day.
Tomorrow, October 20 2010, Congressman John Dingell Faces Dr. Rob Steele of Ann Arbor in a Debate at Monroe Community College's La-Z-Boy Center. It is scheduled for 6:30-7:30 p.m. Congress' most senior legislator John Dingell faces the culmination of his life's work. He will get to defend the utter failure that is socialism. He will have to argue successfully, that Socialism has brought about good things for the area he represents. One must ask, how bright was the South Eastern part of the great state of Michigan in 1955 when Dingell first became a congressman, and what parts of his political philosophy has brought about the success he sees now? Should he first identify what he has personally done, or perhaps highlight the great achievements that have improved life for Michiganders who have entrusted him in Washington with their welfare? Indeed success speaks for itself, he might declare. And perhaps how Detroit has grown to become the shining jewel of the nation, and Michigan's manufacturing has grown to be the envy of the world, and indeed how such wonderful opportunity abounds! If it was true.
Unfortunately, the man with the voice of Michigan's 15th district cannot even read the legislation that affects all of us, much less read the tea leaves that would easily predict the failure that has already happened here because of that legislation. Unfortunately, a misunderstanding of the needs of Michiganders, handicaps this man who has been on the public dole for over a half century. Unfortunately there are people who have actually thought he had enough to offer, that he has remained in his position of public trust for so long.
And now as the public wakes up, even a little bit of understanding that creeps into the psyche of Michigan voters, and people start to wake up in a new day where everything they thought was right, is indeed upside down. The trough is empty, the crops are bare, and the seed corn has been ground for muffins. Even the continued insistence by those who support Dingell to keep the blinders on and remain in the dark finds a new discomfort when the back of the belly meets the front. Its too expensive to go to work, its too costly to hire, and to keep the lights on might mean keeping the cabinet bare. He has succeeded. And tomorrow, he will get to defend his accomplishments. He will get to argue that the pain of losing a job to another part of the world is necessary, to protect us from unscrupulous employers who would take advantage of us here. He will get to offer an explanation of how rewarding failure brings about positive change. He will pronounce a victory in the fight for better health care because government can now "control us." And he will tell the world that Dr Rob Steele would take all of that success away. I can't wait.
